Bay Area: Toddler Style

We’ve been busy around the Bay hunting out the best toddler activities…

Eli’s easy to please as long as we’re doing something (having food in his belly and being rested are prerequisites)

1. San Francisco Pier 39: a must have for all foodies is the famous chowder bread bowl-don’t miss it! Also, there are sea lions on the pier most of the year that kiddos will adore.

2. Make the drive to Santa Cruz-your toddler will love the kiddie rides. There are plenty to choose from to please the whole family. Plus, the people watching cannot be beat. $45 for 50 tickets, most kid rides cost 3-4 tickets. Free under 36inches with a ticket paying adult.

3. Go to a beach to play in the sand. Kids generally love to dig, play, and watch happenings at the beach!

4. Probably Eli’s most favorite, this water feature at Central Park in San Ramon is sure to be a hit. Find a local park with a water feature, suit up, and enjoy!

5. Ice Cream, anyone? Ghiradelli Square in San Francisco is fun to wander (and pick up some free samples of chocolate). Sharing with your toddler, though, is up to you… You know they’d love a bite or two.

6. There is a ton of hiking around. Find a spot and load up. Don’t forget your water and snacks! This is the Lafayette reservoir-3 miles. Parking ~$2

7. Tilden Park in Berkeley. Trains-$3/ride. Need I say more?

8. Oakland Zoo: coolest petting zoo ever. Open 10-4p. If you can find someone you know with a pass, even better- parking and admission are free that way!

Wrong place, wrong time

We drove through the pot rally of Denver on Saturday. 4/20. Not our scene. So, we scrammed. Not before clicking some photos. However, about 90 min after we drove through there were shootings. Glad we were gone by then. And the lighting up. We wouldn’t have felt good about Eli getting high. Or us.

What we love about Denver

The hospital is awesome.

The outdoor beauty.

The people are so nice. Especially toward our 14 mo old toddler!

There are plenty of indoor activity places. My personal favorite is the Denver Children’s Museum.

There is a Mint here. One of 3! Pretty awesome. Although, we have yet to tour since it is 45 minutes and we can’t decide if Eli can handle the time commitment. 14 months is not a sit-still-and-be-patient age.

Staybridge Suites DTC: Totally awesome

We moved to a town called Centennial in CO. It’s about 10 miles south of the Denver VA medical center. It’s in an area referred to at the DTC. Greenwood Village is a really nice town, filled with million dollar homes. Just up the street.

Moving onto the point of the post. Staybridge suites (Ihg hotel) is AMAZING. free laundry room, free hot breakfast, free dinner tues-thurs, 1 bedroom suites with soft luxurious king sized beds, friendly staff, quiet area that is safe with children. All for less than $80/night! Love this place. Especially compared against the Extended Stay we moved out of last week.

Sacrifices on “vacation”

I have been known to refer to this year as our “vacation”. Here are reasons why it is a vacation:

I am not working
We move every month
We get to explore places we haven’t been before
We do not have a real kitchen
We do not have our furniture

Why it is not vacation:

We are paying tuition in addition to accommodation
Dustin has to put in 40-80 hours of work a week
We have no home to return to

……………………………………………………………..

So, what should this adventure be called?

Externtion? or Vacaship? Something else?

……………………………………………………………..

So, on this [insert new, cool name of adventure here] we get to make sacrifices. It wasn’t all planned out, paid for, like a vacation would be. We’re winging it. And hoping to stay within our budget… and more importantly stay together. We failed to stay within this budget for the first month in Denver due to housing complications (ie-not using airbnb, which will be utilized from here on out).

Occasionally, hospitals provide housing accommodations or have certain housing benefits. North Colorado Medical Center (NCMC) is one of them. They have a “medical student townhouse”. We scoped it out last weekend. Looks nice enough. However, it is among frat houses. The University of Northern Colorado resides in Greeley, Colorado.

Eli and I cant stay in the medical student housing. So, in order to make up for our budgeting mistakes for month #1, Dustin will go to his NCMC rotation alone and I will go on “vacation’ to Oregon where my parents are. Fortunately, they’re willing to let us crash there for the month. Pretty posh crashing too. Eli and I will both have our own rooms. While Dustin may be sharing his room with some random medical student. Sounds more of a sacrifice for Dustin than for the rest of us. Nonetheless. It’s a sacrifice.

No Oven? No problem!

Living life out of hotels and rentals usually means no oven. Here are foods that are far less expensive than eating out every meal!

Disclaimer: Requires stove!

Grilled cheese sandwiches
French dip sandwiches
Mac and cheese
Voila meals (for 2 in freezer section, usually sale -$3.50)
Burritos (breakfast with chorizo is our fav)
Tacos
Quesadillas
Pancakes

Weather in Denver

Today, April 7, was a lovely 70. Sunny.

Tuesday, Dustin will be fighting snow on his drive to the hospital. The high is predicted at 19 degrees!

Denver: Toddler Style

Let me preface this with… We did not bring a stroller on this adventure. It would not fit into our car.

  • Denver Children’s museum. Here’s a link to the Center for Young Children section. But seriously, this place was AMAZING. Kind of expensive $7 child and $9 for each accompanying adult. There’s good news for frugal (or poor, whatever. I’m not judging) parents! Target Tuesday is the first Tuesday of the month and they are open to everyone FOR FREE from 4p-8p! Do it. Cant say “seriously” enough.
  • Cherry Creek Mall: Just outside of Macy’s on the East side there is an amazing children’s playground. It’s all squishy and looney toones themed. Pictures to be added later.
  • Denver Zoo: $15/adult seemed steep, but seeing we just were at the San Diego Zoo for $42, we didn’t think twice about paying this fare. Plus, tots are free under 2! There’s an amazing new Asian area. Elephants and rhinoceros’s. A cool feline walk that Eli adored. We thought the enclosures were pretty luxurious compared to other zoos we’ve been to (San Diego, Phoenix, Salt Lake Hogle Zoo).
  • Monkey Bizness: Oh my goodness. Awesome. Great for, IMO, ages 3+. However, if your kid is a daredevil AND you like to play with your young tot, this place is great. Under 24 mo is only $4 and can keep you entertained an entire afternoon. Remember plenty of water and snacks o fuel the fun!
  • City Parks! They’re everywhere. And free. Great deal if the weather is good. We love Westlands Park in Greenwood Village.

My To-Do’s

  • Botanical Gardens: I heard from a reliable mom source with a 13 month old that it’s beautiful and baby loves it. (Here’s a place where I would love to take my stroller. Dang.)
  • Little Monkey Business: Similar to Monkey Bizness, smaller scale. This is focused on pleasing younger babes. 5 years and less! With the cool addition of a cafe for parents to snack. Wednesday they do “family night” from 5p-8p where admission is only $4 (as opposed to something outrageous like $8)! And Pizza is $1. Adults are free!

How to find reasonable short term housing!

Whoa. I thought vrbo.com was cool.

Airbnb is cooler.

Need random short term housing in any of like 130+ countries? Check this place out! I just booked our place for Albuquerque-34 nights! Yay, SOOO excited! Plus, this will be during the balloon fiesta. Yesss
