The road trip home went really well. I started on Sunday the 20th. After having a marvelous “funeral dinner” of funeral potatoes, and ham at David and Kathy’s… I set off to pick up my Dad in Vegas. The drive there was quick and painless…however the stress came when I was waiting to actually pick up my Dad. Last time he came in he got lost and there was no way I could get to him, so I was a little on edge this time. However, he made it safe and sound to the baggage claim. He came prepared with a new little electronic…..a GPS….He didn’t have a clue how to use it, all he new was that this thing was going to get us where we wanted to go without too much trouble.
After using my electronically voodoo on the new Garmin I figured out how to set it to get it point us in the direction of Barstow where we were going to stay for the night. I figured my car-load of stuff would have a better chancing of surviving in Barstow then in Vegas. The trip to Barstow was quick. My Dad was mesmerized at the fact that the Garmin showed every little turn in the road….He couldn’t believed that people could make things like that. I had fun laughing at his new found fascination for 21st century electronics.
The trip took a day and a half. We would have made it on Monday night had we not gotten snowed in at WEED, CA…What a name for a town. Not having had much experience driving in snow it was the most exciting, highly stressful 20 minutes of my life. Snow blowing in sideways and not being able to see the white lines on either side was not fun. After the first 5 minutes….trying not to cry I might add…I told my Dad that I refused to go any further and that I wanted a room for the night! He agreed and we slunk off the road to find the first hotel that we could find. We then were officially snowed in for the night. In the morning however, the roads were fine and we were able to make it home before noon.
