Humanity? Democracy? Compassion? Kindness? Life.
My Grade 11 English teacher, Mr. Wright, stood in front of the class, and emoted in whispered words that could be heard two classrooms away:
“Do not go gentle into that good night”
Then he paused, looked at us young and mostly still innocent students (though we thought we were the monkey’s pyjamas by then), and he took a deep breath, which exploded out in a voice that could be heard ten schools away:
“RAGE, RAGE AGAINST THE DYING OF THE LIGHT!“
We as a group jumped out of our chairs! Our hair stood on end! Our hearts flew into our throats! We gasped for breath!
And then someone in the back of the room laughed. And slowly the sound of a nervous laugh rumbled throughout the classroom. And we sat back down. And we thanked whatever gods we prayed to that the world had not just come to an end.
Mr. Wright still stood at the front of the class, tears rolling down his bloodred cheeks, and he cried for us, because we could not yet understand. Then he adlibbed… “And the light died without a whimper…”
We were but young teenagers, how could he expect us to understand what Dylan Thomas was ranting about?
And then, last night, some 60 years later, I read these words from Filosofa, “Sheesh, rg … can’t we even have a moment without the weight of the world crushing us?” and I finally understood…
My apologies to Jill, I know this was not her intention. But it was my gut reaction!
