The Queen and The Crown Jewel

Although libraries are primarily viewed as a repository of books,

I was taught to view the library as a destination of all things information.

That ethos has served as both cornerstone and foundation.

As I continue to think beyond the books,

I must say, my path has been cemented by those who paved the way.

Standing on the shoulders of giants has widened my perspective and sharpened my outlook.

Goodbye yellow brick road — we’re gonna make mine purple today.

As I thumb through the pages of time,

I find myself in orbit of the queen and the rook.

When I think of The Queen Mother and The Crown Jewel,

I behold pearls of wisdom and grace…

Like a well-read Black girl clutches her favorite book;

These truths we hold are reminiscent of the way Black boys tote a library of memories.

TT shall always be The Queen Mother

And Stonecrest Library shall always be The Crown Jewel.

Henceforth, it shall be my mission to bring Teresa D. Totten Library at Stonecrest to fruition as tribute to both time and place.

If you ask me why I celebrate you with the laud of those who fail to withhold applause at graduations,

I will tell you:

You deserve to smell your flowers while the scent of lavender still calls forth memories.

Forensic Poetics: The District Attorney Is Not The Defendant

What we have been witnessing is a judicial lynching…

The Supreme Court stood by

While they hung

The Honorable Fani T. Willis out to dry

Without legal measure.

What we have been witnessing is a legislative lynching…

Georgia Senate Bill 244

Was signed into law,

Years after the grand jury indictment,

As a subsequent remedial measure.

Please note:

The District Attorney for Fulton County

Was not recused for misconduct or willful and persistent failure to carry out duties.

Within the realm of legal and professional ethics,

The appearance of impropriety is not a legal defense.

Last time that I checked,

The District Attorney was not the one on trial,

Yet somehow,

The blind eye of the law failed to notice the blatant character assassination attempts.

In the eyes of the law…

I have yet to discover a judicial proceeding

That constitutes legal merit or an actual conflict of interest in duties.

How long must ye let their political semantics string you along?

If jurisprudence is the eye of the law,

You have failed to keep a watchful eye on the First Female District Attorney of Fulton County…

The absence of legal merit,

Contextualized by the remedial framing of statutory actions,

Shall make evident

That The Grand Old Party

Has corralled to stir up public opinion.

They traded in their white hoods,

We’ve already danced around this song.

Historically,

They have always attempted to cut ties with loose ends…

Remember when they tried to silence First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt with a bounty?

These days,

They don’t just burn crosses

And gather at the gallows tree;

They wield a legislative pen

And whitewashed news columns

Before you’re symbolically executed in public opinion.

Mastery gives you permission to misbehave.

At first glance,

Poetic form is no song and dance.

Yet, for the craft to advance,

Poets must treat form like dance.

Sometimes it’s best to follow the steps,

Sometimes it’s best to dip your partner backward and misbehave.

Mastery knows the rules well enough to break them with intention.

Sometimes,

You have to waltz into innovationAnd take life by the hand.

Sometimes,

You have to put on your dance shoes

And season the tap dance floor mat with sand.

Mastery doesn’t marry form,

He courts the release of her inhibition.

I ain’t misbehavin’,

I’m just sayin’:

Take those shoes that you have tiptoed around with

And toss them across the powerline.

Before you tap into your greatness,

You must boldly form your voice.

I ain’t misbehavin’,

I’m just sayin’:

Artistry evolves

As art reflects the time.

The architect’s confidence

Is not a feat of choice.

do i calm your nervous system?

tell me,

what do you feel when we sit within the silence of your emotional walls?

tell me,

would you mind if i stayed by your side and held your hand through it all?

does my presence co-regulate your nervous system?

would you mind if i talked to your anxious attachment for a moment?

i love you

and i could see you need reassurance.

come ‘ere, let me hug you…

have you ever experienced love without performance?

if forever is composed of nows,

i vow to love you in micro-moments.

although i long to catch sunsets on the beach as you perform pirouettes,

i am at peace with good morning texts, momentary eye contact, and shared laughs.

i noticed that you love when i notice the little things,

but have you noticed how much i enjoy checking in throughout the day?

i trust that you know,

i am in love with the lady behind the mask…

when you’re vulnerable enough to be your authentic self my heart sings.

what i love most about your sense of adventure

is how you have taught me to prioritize joy and confirm commitment through creative play.

Sentiments of Sense and Sensibility

You cannot just love someone…

Nah, love will not suffice.

You have to take into account what they have experienced in life.

Who is to say how you love someone?

Is it not love that makes us capable of tremendous things?

Love must always suffice.

Love brings transformative feelings to life.

What happens to love when mutual respect withers after spring?

Love must always sway like the sea kissing the shore.

If reciprocity is key,

Love unlocks the door.

If a house is not a home,

The windows to her soul are my favorite metaphor.

If love shall suffice,

I’ll pretend to like plays.

Had I learned to detach from this dismissive avoidant attachment style,

I would have asked her to stay.

In a sense,

My sensibilities could not withstand how her pride and prejudice stood in the way.

Gone Fishing

I cannot believe that I have paid my last respects to another fallen brother.

It hurts to know you are no longer here.

My heart and prayers are with Monique, Carlos, and your mother.

I couldn’t help but think about you and Little Marvin popping up with buckets of fish as I witnessed you laying there.

I know y’all up there somewhere with a fishing rod in hand.

In another life, you would have been the grandfather introducing his grandchildren to the stillness of fishing.

Nevertheless, I celebrate you…

In this lifetime, we learned to fish through dreams deferred and stay afloat in quicksand.

Though I have yet to experience the lake, the tackle, or the bait,

I’ll hold onto the joy you expressed while telling me about fishing.

In fact, I will resolve to check out the Go Fish pass this year.

I know this is not the end,

So I’ll pretend the “Certified Country Boy” has gone fishing again.

Until we meet again,

I’ll be sitting on the dock

Letting the world slow down long enough to notice who we could have been.

I no longer desire to be at war with The Nerd and The N-Word —

My double consciousness is clear.

They saw the gold teeth,

I saw the heart of gold.

They’ll never know business…

I’ll always sit back and let the truth unfold.

Don’t be a stranger, little brother.

I’ve been walking with the ancestors since I stepped foot on this earth.

See you at the crossroads, my brother.

I cannot bear to witness the day your thuggish ruggish bones return to the earth.

As grief moves in waves,

Henceforth, I shall see:

Fishing as memory,

Fishing as metaphor for survival,

Fishing as reunion in the afterlife, and

Fishing as remembrance of my friend, Dave.

One love,

Black Mental Health Matters…

Peace to the Black man, woman, and child.

Your inner being matters.

It’s okay to slow down for a while.

Give yourself permission to do more of what makes you happy today.

When’s the last time that you have sat with a coloring book and a box of crayons? — I know it’s been a while.

I trust you are bold enough to color outside of the lines, so I am asking you to listen carefully to what I am about to say.

Creative play is the pathway to the inner child.

Take time to sit with your emotions and explore your color language.

Ask yourself, “What does my favorite color say about the inner child?”

Tap in to how you have subconsciously expressed emotions through your color language.

You deserve to paint the town red and heal the inner child.

Black Mental Health Matters…

Black is beautiful in both fashion and style.

Your Black skin is beautiful, and your life truly matters.

Before I let you go, I want you to know:

You don’t owe the world your smile.

You don’t have to work twice as hard for half the pay.

And there’s definitely no need to code-switch,

We are letting go of that double consciousness today.

Give the world that blackness that flows effortlessly through your DNA.

Your presence is a gift, yet I challenge you to unwrap the gift and trust that your gifts will make way.

Legends Never Die…

The ancestors remain as long as we continue to speak their name.

Therefore —

It’s Justice for John Scott Jr. as long as life flows in my veins.

These posts are not remembrance,

They are responsibility.

Every time your face appears on the timeline, it’s as if your spirit is whispering,

“Don’t let these punk cops get away with killing me.”

Cuzzie L… I am still here.

You are still here.

We will not let the world move on like nothing happened.

We cannot afford to let up this year.

Morgan County must pay for what has happened.

You will not be reduced to a headline.

We are fighting for your humanity.

We insist that the world see you as someone who mattered deeply to your friends and family.

We’re not just carrying grief —

We are carrying the weight of the dreams you left behind.

Time will not bury the truth this time.

This feeling deep within the pit of my stomach lets me know:

●We will hold the rope this time.

●This time, we’re not letting go.

●This time, justice will not slip away.

Your story will be told,

Even if the blind eye of justice appears to be looking away.

One love,

May those that paved the way remind you to WALK IN YOUR PURPOSE.

We pray you’re walking with the ancestors and stepping into this glorious day like the Nicholas Brothers.

If art is therapy, we challenge thee to slow down and see the humanity in one another.

Dear sisters and brothers, you have the capacity to break glass ceilings, and you have yet to scratch the surface?

It’s time to TAP INTO YOUR DESTINY…

Collectively STAND ON COMMON GROUND.

We’re here to preserve legacy

And break stereotypes like coffee grounds.

The arts help FILTER OUT THE BIAS.

The humanities are a lot like dancing between the ripe and the rot.

When it comes to truth and bias,

The underlying wisdom must be nourished while the old narratives rot.

My poems are not poems, and I say that to say:

I believe in the transformative process of allowing outdated cultural stories to decay while new truths make way.
