Passengers cry and pray as smoke-filled plane rattles to emergency landing
James 1:2-4
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Lately I have felt very restless, yet helpless to do anything to assuage the feeling. Part of the unsettled feeling comes from (in my typical over-dramatic fashion) the belief that my entire life is in utter chaos. It should also be noted that my “entire life” consists of home, work, church, and my relationship with L.
Home is in chaos because my house has been without a fully functioning kitchen for almost a month as it’s being renovated. I’m not sure why this is such a stressful situation, though it is likely due to my affinity for routine and order. It is difficult to feel like things are…

“Cape Doctor” the creator of slanting trees
These slanting trees are definitely a first for me
“Cape Doctor” or “die Kaapse dokter” in Afrikaans is the local name for the strong, persistent and dry south-easterly wind that blows on the South African coast from spring to late summer. Although the wind smites a wide area of the sub-continent, it is notorious especially in and around the Cape Peninsula, where it can be unpleasantly strong and irritating. My first encounter with this strong wind I lost my umbrella and nearly got blown over while walking along the coast.
Cant believe these trees actually grow this way
This wind is known as the Cape Doctor because it has long been held to clear Cape Town of pollution and ‘pestilence’ and is the reason for the slanting trees found all along the coast. It is quite unique to see all the trees along the coast slanted inland as they now grow away from this fierce…

New beginnings in the land of Oz
So, we made it! Here we are on the other side of the planet and aside from Abby nearly being subjected to penalties of $350 for accidentally “smuggling” an apple into the country, everything has run smoothly. It is 8:00 p.m in Sydney now and I can barely keep my eyes open. The past two days here have been full on and we have seen a lot of the city in that time. I’ve adjusted to the time difference quite well with the jet lag serving in my favor. We have been up and out of bed around six or seven a.m. each morning and have made the most of our time here in the city.
I definitely do not consider myself a big city girl and I usually find large cities overwhelming and unappealing as opposed to the mountains and countryside. Sydney definitely has some magic to it and…

The Great American Road trip (part 2)

So carrying on from where I left off, you can see on the map that our next stop after Bardstown, Kentucky was Columbus, Indiana. Here is an important background story on why we had to go there. When i was younger, my Aunt introduced me to Karen Kingsbury’s christian romantic novels. I loved them(and still do). The 20 or so books from 4 series are set in the real life town called Bloomington, Indiana. The hotels in Bloomington were expensive and looked quite nasty. So you can imagine how excited I was to find a cheap deal on a luxurious Marriott Hotel only 40 minutes away. It also happened to be Matts birthday and we were pooped from the constant travel, so we decided to stay for a few days. It was GREAT!
The room we stayed in was like a studio apartment for Kings(compared to the hotels and hostels…
