November was a very happy, yet stressful month for us. Exactly one week after we moved into our house, I went into labor. If you don't care to read about the details, skip the next paragraph, otherwise here is what happened.
I woke up at 5 am with what I now realize were very minor contractions. Everyone had been asking me if I was having any pre-labor contractions and I never knew if I was or not. I can now say I didn't have any contractions before going into labor. They were about 5 minutes apart and strong enough that I couldn't really sleep through them, so I got up and ate breakfast, checked my emails and stuff to distract me. After a while I decided to go lay down again (I hadn't woken up Thomas yet because it was so early) and around 8 am my water broke. That woke him up and we decided it was time to tell our parents that I was in labor. It was also at that time that my contractions started getting more intense and closer together. We left for the hospital at about 10:30 with the contractions about 2 minutes apart. I had planned on trying to go without an epidural but I wasn't sure what my pain tolerance would be, so I wanted to get to the hospital before they got too bad. Once we arrived, they checked me and I was at a 5/6 so I got into a tub and that helped ease the intensity of the contractions. After an hour or so, the water had cooled off and they were coming about every minute and getting really intense. I think it was a combination of being in pain, cold and wet, but my whole body started shaking and I couldn't stop. This prevented me from being able to relax inbetween contractions, which made me decide to get an epidural. I have always been scared to have a needle that big going into my spine, but everyone told me I wouldn't care when I was in labor. Turns out it wasn't that painful. I don't know if it was because I was already in a lot of pain or if it really doesn't hurt that bad, but I was grateful for it! It took away all the pain in my stomach, which allowed me to relax, but almost simultaneously my pelvis started to ache and didn't ever stop. They even tried giving me an extra dose of the epidural medicine but that didn't work. Turns out the epidural was only working on half of my body, so I guess i can claim that I did it half naturally. :) By 2 pm I was fully dilated but she hadn't dropped at all so i had to push for 2 hours. At 4:30 pm, Ember Jane came into the world at 7 lbs 7oz, with lots of hair and very alert. I don't think she closed her eyes for the next 2 hours. It was/ is very surreal to think that she used to be inside of me and that she is mine. I am so grateful for her and that everything went as well as it did. The only thing that wasn't quite so pleasant was that for the next 2 weeks, I could barely walk or sit because my tailbone hurt so bad.
On top of it all, one week later, Thomas got the stomach flu and because he couldn't stay hydrated, ended up in the hospital with pancreatitis for a week. The hardest part was that I couldn't be the one to take him in and stay with him because we didn't want Ember exposed to the germs at the hospital. Thankfully, his mom and other family members were able to keep him company and watch out for him most of the time. I was also able to visit a couple of times for a couple of hours while my mom watched Ember. Speaking of my mom, she thought I gave her a run for her money when I was a baby, little did she know I would push those limits 28 years later. I wouldn't have made it through that week if she hadn't been so generous with her time. Thank you dad and Torie for lending her to me so often!
Anyway, Thomas got out of the hospital and 4 days later it was Thanksgiving! We spent it with my side of the family and I think it was the first time I actually did my hair and put on real clothes that month, ha! Also, like before, I didn't have the frame of mind to take pictures, but it was fun watching people hold Ember.
In leiu of Thanksgiving, here are only a few things I am grateful for:
-An AMAZING husband who has cleaned and organized our house and who is wrapped around his daughter's little finger :)
-Fantastic parents and in-laws who were there when we needed them most
-Wonderful relatives who also offered and gave support to us in our time of need
-A BEAUTIFUL little girl who makes my life more meaningful every day.
-My knowledge of a kind and loving Savior and Heavenly Father, and the plan of Salvation
Sorry this was such a long post, but here are a few pictures to make it worth the read:
She loves sleeping with her hands right by her face, which makes swaddling her a battle sometimes :)
She didn't like her first bath, but as long as I don't wash her hair, she loves them! She also loves stretching her legs just like they are posed in this picture, it is hilarious!
Just a favorite picture of mine of her sleeping :)
