I was, I think, fourteen when I fell in absolute love with Gary W. He worked at the grocery store in town and he was one of three love at first sights I've had in my 50+ years on this planet. I went full on in to my first absolute seduction of a man. He was a bit older than I was and I guess in this day and age a 14 year seducing a 19 year old would be frowned upon. But I did it. My dad was in the process of seducing a checkout girl at the same grocery store. I think she was 20 around that time. (They did get married and got divorced after a very long number of years and have two wonderful children but I still consider her to be an asshole home wrecker). Anyway, I got information from Julie the home wrecker when she came over to be a sleezy asshole about Gary. She told me everything about him. And I took all that information to a new level of obsession. I went to Felpauch every day to just buy a pack of gum or whatever I could afford with the quarters I stole from my dad's bedside table. Just so I could see Gary. I went to extremes and painted my white tennis shoes with INXS all over them. And I'd hum George Michael songs. Because I knew he loved both of those artists. My first date with him, and I can't believe my parents allowed it, it was to go get the new Duran Duran album the second it was released. Then we went to see a scary Halloween movie. And then he opened his glove compartment and I saw a box of condemns. I was with a very adult man and it scared me.But he turned out to be a very lovely man and he would come over and we would listen to music and talk and he always smelled like cereal (his favorite food) and Adidas cologne. I did not ever do the 14 year old sex with him but I did have lots of kisses and talks. Anyway. I started watching a new show, "Rooster", and they played a remake of the INXS song, "Beautiful Girl" and I just can't get it out of my head now and I cried a lot. (I mean, crying a lot is natural for me these days but this one hit hard). Gary never got to hear that song. INXS was his favorite band and he would have been the first person in line to buy that album. When the album came out, I got it immediately in his honor. I believe I still have it some where around here. I also still have a napkin in a scrapbook that is still drenched with 80's Adidas cologne. Gary was killed in a motorcycle accident at the age of 19. He was a beautiful man. |
