Happy Monday!
It’s March 2nd, 2026 and it’s still freaking cold in Toronto. -15, feeling like -20, but there is some good news! It’s “warming up” to -4 this afternoon, and next week the temperatures are projected to be 15 degrees! (Around 60 for our American friends).
So much happening today…
An ex-Google executive just said that degrees in law and medicine are a waste of time because they’re expensive, take a long time and that by the time students graduate, AI will have caught up and be able to do those jobs… Oh boy.
So, if you’re currently scraping and saving every dollar to put your kid(s) through law or medical school, or you’re the student and you’re in one of those programs breaking your back, studying day and night, I’m sorry if that comment doesn’t sit well with you.
I’m sure there will be changes as AI takes over the world and everyone loses their jobs and the government starts giving us a universal income, which we’ll pay taxes on, which will then go into the kitty for the next year’s government income.
Just pity those who find their way to actually make money. GASP. They’ll be taxed into oblivion because where else is the government going to get this money from? If they print more money, that devalues the currency and increases inflation – more money to purchase the same limited number of goods drives up prices.
So, enjoy your $7.99 Canadian strawberries – made in a hothouse somewhere between Toronto and Niagara Falls, because we don’t want to buy the US ones for $1.99 because the US has tarrifs on some of our goods.
Imagine if the current government actually looked after the best interest of Canadians and took action to curb immigration earlier, cut down on crime earlier, made a trade deal with the US because who cares who the President is, they’re our largest trading partner, and kept their word to keep grocery prices in check by removing the carbon tax… Remember that tax that they deny has contributed to increased prices at the grocery store?
Imagine if we continued to put Canadians first instead of Brookfield, and used our natural resources to make the country stronger and more afforbable while in the process cutting back harmful emissions?
Well it’s not happening, so good luck to all of us.
It could be worse… You could be a federal government employee or work at the CRA!
Leading up to the election which saw Mark Carney win, and Pierre Polievre lose his seat, there was a campaign by the public sector unions who told their membership and the rest of the voting public to not vote Conservative because the Cons were going to “gut” the public service and your public services.
Hows that working out?
Polievre kept saying that he wouldn’t cut the public service but rather not backfile areas as people retired and left, and that he wouldn’t force public servants back into the office.
Carney won, and he’s cutting 40,000 public servants and forcing everyone back into the office.
I’m of 2 minds, here… Firstly, as a public servant when you took the job there was likely no “work from home” unless you had specific medical exemption to do so. As a result, having to work back in the office shouldn’t be alarming for you.
Yes, some people moved away during COVID, and some found that working at home in their PJ’s was preferable to having a team leader peeking over your cubicle checking as to why you had a 16-minute coffee break or an hour lunch, but that should be dealt with on a team-by-team, person-by-person basis.
I don’t think forcing 1000 employees into an office that holds 250 makes a ton of sense, especially a unionized workforce which is used to having it’s way. Which, of course, only makes sense that these unions have filed grieveances against the federal government for forcing employees to take early retirement. I mean, who saw this coming?!?
Everyone but this government, apparently.
In other captivating news this sunny, cold Monday, apparently I’ve managed to misss that there is a little monkey which may or may not be called “Punch” who shleps a stuffed animal around with it.
That’s cute, no?
The NHL trade deadline is coming up… Good. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been beyond disappointing this year. Something didn’t feel right a whole bunch of years back when they dealt with Willy Nylander holding out for more money and instead of trading his ass away and sending a message to the team, they paid him. So him, American captain Auston Matthews and eggshell centre Mitch Marner were going to be the ones to return the Leafs to the promised land…
Unfortunately those of us who have watched hockey, or coached it at any level, you know that it takes heart, desire and a willingness to do “whatever it takes” to grind out wins during the playoffs, and this team has never been that kind of team. They don’t hit, they don’t go to the net and they won’t put the work in along the boards or in the corners to get the pucks.
Additionally, having half the teams salary tied up with 4 players, it means the rest of the players are fringe. It was a bad plan, and the Leafs have a chance to make it right in a short time. Fire the coach, fire the GM, and trade the dead weight. Whomever you can get to skate hard for their shift and not lollygag back to the bench are your team, and hard work becomes their identity.
Please. I’d like to see a cup in Toronto before I’m done here…
This article came across my screen as I was writing this. How to tell if your child is spoiled and what to do about it. A spoiled child is used to getting what they want when they want it with few exceptions. If they can’t get it from Mommy they go to Daddy. If Daddy can’t get it for them they seek out other family members. If they’re repeatedly rejected by one parent, who won’t give them what they want, they’re “done with them”.
When parents spoil their children, their intentions are often good, albeit misguided. They indulge their kids because they want to provide them with the best life possible, giving them everything Mom and/or Dad didn’t have growing up.
That’s always been at the root of my motivation to give my kids what they wanted when they were younger. Video games, in game purchases, meals after sports, presents to attend practices… The whole shebang.
So if they’re exhibiting any of the signs of being spoiled, which you can see by reading the article, fear not. There are solutions in there too about how to fix it.
And with that in mind, I’m not reading and sharing the article from the UK about how parents who bypass another parents social media ban is a bad parent… Never happened. Nothing to see here. Move along.
But really, before I go for real this time… for real, for real… It was my birthday not too long about and my sister bought me a bag of the Starbucks 1971 Dark Roast. As someone born in 1971, and who only drinks dark roast coffee, this was an exciting acquisition. It professes to have “notes of toasted sugar & rich walnut”.

It does.
I ground up some beans, and made myself a cup and while it smells VERY strong, I can tell you that it’s not bitter, nor does it taste strong. To be fair, as a long-time lover of coffee and who at one point in time used that knowledge to rank coffee chains here in TO, I could taste neither the toasted sugar, nor the walnut. But what I did get was a really nice taste on my pallet after drinking it, and whenever I walked by the grounds the smell was so pleasant that I wanted more.
This is a great cup of coffee.
