Firestarter Kindle Edition

FIRESTARTER – A romantic comedy with a few flames!

Alice has a fantasy. It starts with being rescued by a hunky fireman, involves the kiss of life and ends in him not needing his uniform. At the New Forest Show, Alice is offered an innocent version of her dream. Reluctantly she turns down fireman Hamish's invitation.

Despite Alice's blameless behaviour, boyfriend Tony's obsessive jealousy kicks in. Hamish wants to take Tony's place, but a hoaxer ensures she already sees far too much of Hampshire Fire Service. The threat of an explosive sprout surprise, her mum's baking, sister Kate's mind boggling pep talks and the peculiar behaviour of Alice's boss provide distractions.

Is Alice really in danger? What is Kate up to? Can Hamish possibly be as perfect as he seems? It takes masses of wonderful food, disgusting wine, smelly mud, red footed crows and steamy Welsh passion, but she finds the answers. And rethinks her fantasy.

Top review from the United States

I don't often read romance novels, but I do enjoy Patsy Collins' books. Her characters come across as real people, with all their strengths and flaws, and I find myself caring for them and wanting their lives to work out well.
Alice is a people pleaser, perhaps too much so. Like the "ideal woman" of the "how to please your man" articles, she sets aside her own wishes to defer to her boyfriend, Tony. The relationship isn't healthy for either of them, and as Tony becomes more and more possessive and controlling, she finally rebels. Tony doesn't take it well, and things get exciting. Has Tony crossed the line from obsessive to dangerous, or is something else going on? Alice has to deal with escalating drama, while trying to find out who she really is and whether she can avoid making the same relationship mistakes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Firestarter is well up to Patsy Collins' best standard.

Alice Bakewell has a thing about being rescued from a blazing building by a hunky fireman, using a fireman's lift - obviously. "But I'm so over it," she tells her sister, Kate. Well, maybe. When Alice and Kate meet ex-schoolfriend, Hamish, on the Fire Service stand at the New Forest Show and he offers to 'rescue' Alice as part of his demonstration, she declines, because she is in a relationship with Boring Tony and it wouldn't be right. However, when she dumps Boring Tony and romance kindles between Alice and Hamish, a series of false alarm calls are sent to the emergency services.

An excellently constructed story. Characterisation is, likewise, well-defined. Alice and her sister, Kate, are a couple of likable girly girls, absorbed in clothes and boyfriends. Their father brews unspeakable home-made wine from vegetables in his garden. Interestingly, Patsy, who has not described proper sex acts in her previous novels, includes a very steamy sex scene in Firestarter.

Well up to Patsy's best standard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Firestarter - a crackling read!

This is a well written, escapist read by Patsy Collins with great characters.

I loved the relationship between the sisters, felt rather sorry for stuffy Tony who cares for Alice in his way, but was overjoyed when she finally gets it together with Hamish, the hunky Fireman.

In the mix is a bit of a whodunnit too, and a dad who makes disgusting wine from excess veggies, but this loving family do all they can to avoid hurting his feelings – whilst trying desperately to avoid drinking the wine!

The book is very descriptive and I learnt a lot about birds.

All in all a super read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great escapist read

An escapist read that will have you wondering why Alice is still with her boring boyfriend when she had a chance of being with hunky fireman Hamish. When Hamish offers to rescue her from a building at the Hampshire Show and she says, 'No' her Sister and this reader thought she'd gone mad. Tony means well, and he does care for her in his way, and he gets on with her family, so there's more to the relationship than you first see.

Great characters, and I love Alice's dress sense. I want that orange jumper with 3D oranges on. And some of the other clothes she gets to wear as well. As the story unravells, we meet the Hampshire fire service, and see that Tony does care, and also another side to Hamish is revealed as well. And the sweet and shy Alice changes as the story goes on. You'll have to read it to find out whether she gets on top of things, so that's the end of the review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking story, well written.

This is not really my sort of book, in terms of genre. It is escapism pure and simple. A bit like a guilty pleasure, I really enjoyed it. The characters are well drawn, but from the particular point of view of the lead character - I enjoyed the way that her perception evolved. Its a lovely balanced tale, that kept drawing me on.
