About the author

Bonnie Myrick was born in 1932 to Scotch, Irish, and English parents. Her writing career began at age 62 when she retired as Art Educator. She has authored three novels, "Out of Control," 'Nelly of No Man's Land," and "Angel of Mercy." Her historical, "Nelly of No Man's Land," was based on her mother's homesteading experiences in Oklahoma where her parents struggled to survive cattlemen who set fires to drive out the settlers, outlaws who terrorized No Man's Land, fought against wolves and rabid dogs, all while trying to carve a living from the land. "Out of Control," a paranormal suspense, was based on a campground experience when she and her sister vacationed in Oklahoma and were confronted by a twisted man with a twisted past. "Angel of Mercy," a mystery, drew heavily on her experiences as a caregiver for her sister. She also co-authored two books of dark fiction with Hazel Hart, "Dark Side of the Rainbow" and "Edge of Nowhere."
Bonnie collects abandoned ferals, loves fine art, singing, and quilt-making. She has one daughter and lives in the Midwest

- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseB. J. Myrick's "Nelly of No Man's Land" is a wonderful mix of historical fiction, adventure and romance. From its authentic frontier details, to its harsh realities of everday life and death, to the infidelity, betrayal and love, I thoroughly enjoyed the excitement and emotion of this book. Myrick's portrayal of Nelly as an all too-human of a character, strong yet flawed, gives the reader someone to root and cheer for. A delightful read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI liked this book and was entertained by the storyline and characters, but mostly I liked. It because it showed how we all have sinned and need forgiveness from God and from one another
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseObviously I wasn't as taken with this book as most others. I've read so many books on this subject and found this to be average. There's a good lesson of forgiveness and redemption but I felt there was something missing in the telling of the story. It was not bad or exceptionally good, just average.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseNelly Duncan has a secret and doesn't want her husband Will to find out.
Nelly was a young girl of fifteen when Will seduced her. Her well-to-do family disinherited her when she married him against their wishes; having eloped, his baby already growing in her belly.
Will was uneducated, could neither read nor write but he loved Nelly and she loved him.
Their son was born then later they had two daughters.
Will kept nothing secret; he drank too much and paid more attention to the saloon girls than he did to his wife. Their marriage began to fail; she knew it would but she loved Will and continued to put up with his infidelity.
When a traveling salesman happened by on a day when Will was away; Nelly couldn't help but be drawn to his kindness and warmth. He made her feel every bit the woman her husband failed to do and she fell into his arms.
When she gave birth to a little girl, her husband assumed the child was his. He didn't think twice about the fact that she was blond and blue eyed while the rest of them had dark hair and eyes.
A few years later, Nelly came down with an infection. The town's doctor could give her no hope to live beyond a few more months. Devastated and desperate, Will, his father and mother-in-law took Nelly to a doctor who used herbs to cure. He lived in No Man's Land.
It was a rough ride through undeveloped land in a covered wagon with four kids for company as Will urged the horses over some of the worse country's terrain.
She was weak and at the point of death when they arrived. It took time but she became healthy again and life resumed.
Will and his son made a dugout in the side of a mountain; nothing more than a hovel with a dirt floor that would be their new home until he could find work and earn money to erect something better.
Life was rough in this desolate place. As Will's wife, she led a life of drudgery, worked her hands raw and had no comforts. While she was stuck there day after day, Will was free to visit town on one pretext or another. He didn't fool Nelly as he thought he did.
She became disillusioned with the entire marriage; he gave her no reason to want to continue with it so she took the three girls and went to stay with her grandmother in California while she thought about things. Wray, their son, stayed behind to help get the crops in.
In California, her grandmother played matchmaker; she tried to urge Nelly away from her life of hardship and offered to take her and her children in. She gave a dinner party and invited the most eligible man in town and when Nelly saw who it was, her heart lifted. She never thought she would see the salesman again. He knew nothing of Evie.
They dallied one afternoon and it was then she realized she loved both of these men and decided to go back to her husband to sort things out.
Shortly after she returned home, she realized she was pregnant. She was gone for many weeks and there had been no intimacy between her and Will before she left nor since her return. What would she do?
Nelly of No Man's Land has unexpected twists and turns to keep the reader engaged in the story and turning the pages. You become part of the family and will miss them when the last page is turned.
I recommend this book to those who love a good romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNelly of No Man's Land so captured my interest that I read it in three days. I simply couldn't put it down. The story unfolds with adventure, risk, love and the agonizing trials of settling in the old west. I was so caught up in the family of characters that I began cheering as well as worrying and suffering right along with them. A delightful read. I hope to hear more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thought I would enjoy this book just because of name. I REALLY LIKED I DIDN'T WANT TO PUT DOWN. I WISH IT COULD HAVE WENT ON AND ON. WILL KEEP U READING TO SEE WANT HAPPENS NEXT. THANK YOU FOR SUCH WONDERFUL READING.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI grabbed this book because it was free at the time. Boy, am I glad I did so! This is your non-sugar-coated version of Little House On The Prarie type story. The characters are solid and so real, and the story line is so down to earth that you'll find it totally refreshing. Smartest thing Amazon did was to offer this book up for free for a time. Because of it, I intend to read more books written by B.J. Myrick, because she is just that good!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBonnie Myrick's novel of pioneer living in the Oklahome Panhandle is a novel of love lost and found. Nelly is sick with a life-threatening infection, and her husband Will makes the decision to settle in the area known as No Mans Land. A healer lives in that area who may help Nelly get well.
The family makes the journey, encountering dangers along the way. The healer helps Nelly, and her condition gradually improves. Despite feeling better, Nelly wishes for a different life. The land mirrors her situation: bleak, hopless, and filled with hard work just to survive. What's worse, Will Duncan, Nelly's husband, likes to drink and is lured by the scent of the bar girls.
Fed up with Will, Nelly takes the kids and goes by train to San Franciso. There she lives the "good" life with her grandmama. She meets the man of her dreams. She goes with him to a secret spot ....
Nelly of No Man's Land is about the people and the grasslands of Oklahoma. It does not glamourize the pioneer living. It is about love and committment, the life we want and the life we are meant to have. Most of all, it is about forgiveness.
Follow Nelly on her journey to understanding the human heart.
