Blogging for Young & Old: Blogging as an Element of Popular Culture

ImageEsteemed Readers, have you ever thought about the WordPress space & all of us in the context of popular culture? Please, try!😎☺ I’m certain that this idea will make you happy. Alike Internet itself, blogging is a form of popular culture developed in the cyber space. The Oxford English Dictionary gives a definition that I like. It seems to me precise: “Popular culture – culture based on the tastes of ordinary people more than an educated elite”. There is something barbaric in it, but so close to the environment we have in the WordPress.

So, blogging is an element of popular culture, even if it is invisible in a material way. This is a digital form of writing, a literary (and not much) expression, a creative dialogue between the world & a man. There are plenty of other metaphors we might use to explain this artistic phenomenon as well as there are infinite ways how popular culture reveals itself in it. Blogging is for people and made by people. It is vivid, changeable & so rapid that one can hardly catch it up. It is a real reflection of the present society that is interesting to study even from the social point of view. Our life is a window of blogging that shows everyday trends of popular culture and suggests  new forms along with conservative models developed in ancient Internet times. ☺ This kaleidoscope immerses us in the WordPress universe & separates from each other demonstrating  infinite possibilities of a human mind that can create in real life & in an imaginary reality.

Happy Inspiration to All the Blogs!

Esteemed Readers, what do you think about blogging as a part of popular culture? Do you agree that a blog makes its modest contribution in it? Please, share your thoughts in comments.

Russian Orthodox Icons: Images of Saint Nicolas II

ImageEsteemed Readers, here is another Sacred Image of Saint Nicolas widely spread in the Russian Orthodox Church. It is known that a strict style of our Icons is a Christian message that should make an observer fear & ponder upon his own imperfection in front of God.

Curious facts: The Russian Orthodox sources tell that once Saint Nicolas saved three young maidens who were poor & couldn’t get married as they had no dowry. Their father pushed them to prostitute. When Saint Nicolas, – who was already a bishop, – learnt about it, he brought some jewelries to their home in disguise. This legend is considered to be the beginning of his future New Year image. I wonder if the same story is spread in the Catholic world too.

Saint Nicolas is also considered to be the patron of seafarers. Perhaps, this is connected with the fact that his family dealt either with sea trade or with fishing. The second version seems to the Russian Orthodox sources more reliable.

Saint Nicolas is venerated on the 19th of December.

La Gazette January 1638: Historical News Today

Image

Esteemed Readers, February 1638 has brought plenty of extraordinary news. A comet visited Europe, so it must be a sign for our enemies to stop the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) as soon as possible:

Presbourg, the 2nd of February, 1638: ” There are different opinion about the comet that was passing the town from six to nine o’clock in the evening. It was also noticed in Austria. It seemed to be as bright as the Sun with a tail turned to the East & moved to the North closed to the Midday…”

Prague, the 4th of February, 1638: “On the 2nd & the 3rd of this month there was such a strong gale that destroyed bell-towers of the Hospital & the Church of S.Gillet as well as many others in this city. The river raised high & plenty of houses were inundated…”

Frankfurt, the 13th of February, 1638: “Deputies of Mayence, Darmstad, Wirtzbourg  & this city can’t get back anything from the Coronel Ramsay & to impact restitution of good he has arrested. Besides, they can’t make him leave Hanau as he says that he doesn’t want to leave such a good place for financial reasons like the Governor of Lunebourg, while hostages he wishes to give us are out of his qualities. He even refused Deputies of Darmstad to pass under the pretext that they hadn’t demanded passports. He continues to keep the Count of Hassau as a prisoner, while there are more & more citizens who dislike him due to his acts: they are not permitted to gather in groups larger than three; all candles in their houses are forbidden to be burnt after night o’clock in the evening. That’s why the Elector of Mayence made a new call to hostages no matter all the obstacles…”

Astrological corner. All about stars: Nunki Pelagus, a Star of a Noble Heart That Might Lead to Abyssto

Image

Nunki Pelagus or Sigma Sagittarii is one of the brightest star of this constellation. This is a binary star system which light is similar to Saiph in Orion.  Its exact location is 13 ° Capricorn.

Nunki Pelagus is a very ancient star known yet in Assyria & Babylonia. It derives from a Babylonian expression “the image of Eridu” (the city of Ea, the god of wisdom). Besides, this is a very far star. It takes 228 light-years from the Sun to reach it! So, I guess that it will fit for new generations more advanced in space travels.

Due to its extraordinary force Nunki Pelagus has double, fatal influence in Astrology. On one hand, its bearer is a noble knight that dreams & knows to serve his master & to save the world from dragons or other weird creatures. On the other, its exceptional power might turn him into a dark genius who suffers from arrogance, an alcoholic or a drug addiction & tries to disturb the good around. I guess that Darth Vader is a good example of a probable impact of this star.  So, Nunki Pelagus calls us to ponder upon our wishes and how to apply them in a good way if one possesses such an extraordinary star.

Happy Stellar Journey! 🌟🎉🌟🌹

Louis XIV Asks Riddles February 2026

Image

Esteemed Readers, spring is near by. It inspires us for new adventures & new journeys. So, let a new riddle be dedicated to a travel & to a magnificent diary by Messire de Choisy on his way to Siam we read some time ago. This is a hint. I hope that it will help you! Good luck! ⚓🛥🌴🌴🌴

” Beyond my functions, I’m rather manoeuvrable. You do with me whatever you wish, but if you fix me well, I can’t be managed so easily, no matter what orders the Governor gives. If you see me swelled this is no more than a senseless glory I dislike. You can often see me fixed high strolling in a vaste space. I submit to laws of a dizzy one who respects none even in case of danger. He knows to lead us to troubles & havoc instead of moving to quiet places. And I must obey him even it is not obvious. I’m a great slave of his. We are bound to each other.  I feel hung in order to receive something good from him…”

My dear John, my congratulations! You are the hero of the month! Your wonderful analysis didn’t fail. 🥂🎉🌹🍋🍋🍋

Pietro Messia. Encyclopedia “Selva di Varia Lettione”: Animals-Doctors That Gave Men Good Medicines

Although Pietro Messia is an ancient author, he also shares the opinion that they were animals that learnt mankind how to cure various illnesses. Following observations of ancient philosophers & authors, he writes in his encyclopedia:

Wild animals that advised men plenty of medicines & their properties

” As Pliny says, humanity is obliged to animals with numerous medicines & remedies. Deer show us that a certain herb named Dictamnus albus is good to extract arrows & to cure their wounds. Watching them doing this Aristotle adds that Crete goats do the same. When deer are bitten with venomous frogs named Falanga they eat crabs to be healed. Properties of the greater celandine (Chelidonium majus) are good for eyes as some birds use it for their chicks. Turtles have oregano to protect from venomous snakes. That’s how we learnt about its properties. Least weasel eats rue to fight with rats, while wild boars cure some illnesses with ivy or crabs. When a snake changes its skin & spends plenty of time in a hole, it eats tops of wild fennel that is also known as a herb that improves vision. While bears poisoned with a herb named mandragora heal themselves with ants…”

Pietro Messia, “Selva di varia lettione” (1670), p. 220.

Esteemed Readers, do you know any interesting ancient herbal medicines? Please, share your comments below.

Blogging for Young & Old: Nonsense or Blogging Crisis

ImageThe idea of this post was inspired by my dear reader Klaus (click to visit his blog). He expressed me his disappointment concerning the modern blogging, both in its form & style. Indeed, there are reasons to ponder & to worry about.

Too much nonsense: well, this is the truth we must accept. In the context of a general cultural degradation, wokism & high industrial development that cancels culture as a spiritual human source blogging, being a modern element of the popular culture, suffers very much. Everybody can blog & there are neither frames nor basic limits that keeps it at a good level. Culture with the moto “everybody can write whatever he wants” will never reach high levels of William Shakespeare, Francis Scott Fitzgerald or James Joyce whose style & thought was deep  sophisticated. So, it depends on blogging communities & us to change this situation to the better. I suppose that first ones might promote special courses for high quality blogging or at least make some useful rules to lower nonsense in the blogging space, while, we, authors, should be more responsible & realize that all we write remain its digital footprint in the Internet.

Blogging crisis or to blog is old-fashioned: Nay, blogging can’t be old-fashioned! It can be dull, stupid, ignorant, but this is an essential part of the Internet life that is rushing ahead. Speed and new, shortened forms of receiving information are its competitors. So, it is necessary to accept this challenge & to fight. Well… perhaps, I sound old-fashioned too, but I believe in a better cultural Internet future than we have at the moment. The current crisis reflects a stable ill condition of our society. Therefore, we must continue our work with hope & persistence. Cultural growth will be back & then our modest contribute will be awarded with happy readers that will follow us even when we’re gone.

Happy Inspiration to All the Blogs!

Esteemed Readers, what does annoy you more: blogging nonsense of general lowering of culture? Please, share your thoughts in comments.
