Welcome to Rwap Adventures - Bringing you
the Best of Interactive Fiction!
RWAP Adventures is a
division of RWAP
Software,
which has been in existence since 1987. We began by reviewing adventure
games for the QL Adventurer's Forum (a magazine published for the
Sinclair QL by Richard Alexander of CGH Services). We found that
many of these early adventures contained bugs and would often become
unpaid beta testers, reporting to the adventure authors with lists of
bugs and often suggestions of how to rectify them.
Although many of these
early adventures are no longer available, we have tried to gather these
together and make them available. We have also taken on the
maintenance of several commercial adventure programs, originally
published by Talent Computer Systems of Glasgow, Oliver Neef,
BugByte and Martin Hopkins.
As well as now
being able to purchase and download Sinclair QL
Adventures again, we have also converted some to
run under Windows, using one of the many Sinclair QL
emulators available as a runtime engine.
What is an Adventure?
One of the greatest
escapism programs ever conceived was the adventure program, where you
could enter a whole new computer generated world and control a hero to
overcome various difficult, thought provoking obstacles in order to
achieve a specific goal. Many different adventures have been
written for the Sinclair QL over the years, but they have become
increasingly harder to find.
The early adventure
programs were mainly text adventures (now more commonly known as
Interactive Fiction) where the words have to describe the world to you,
as seen through the eyes of your character, but also some adventures
encompass pictures of each location. Control of characters is generally
simple, with two word phrases such as OPEN DOOR or NORTH to act as
commands, but some adventures allow for much longer phrases such as
OPEN DOOR AND THEN GO NORTH.
The adventure game which
has been heralded as the mother of adventure games was known as
Colossal Cave and written by Crowther and Woods in the 1970s. Various
remakes of this adventure have been made for probably every computer
that has since existed. Since that time, things have moved on apace,
and although many recent adventures incorporate slick graphics, there
is still a strong hard-core of Interactive Fiction fans.
RWAP Adventures has managed
to re-release various adventure games, all (except for Oliver Neef's
Return to Eden - not the Level 9 Game !!) previously distributed by
Talent+ software, who have since moved onto other projects. They have
been updated to ensure that they work on modern operating systems and
converted to disk operation, but otherwise have retained the humour and
atmosphere which was originally created for them. We are also now
converting these early games to run under Windows, because Talent
Computer Systems released some of them for other computers, such as the
Commodore 64, Electron, BBC Micro and the Atari ST.
A wide range of Public
Domain adventures are also available for the Sinclair QL. Please feel
free to download them (or we can supply them on disk if preferred) from
our Public Domain library. You might also like to see if there is any
second hand adventures which may interest you. Another option, would be
to download one of the excellent ZX Spectrum emulators for the Sinclair
QL and use it to run the wide range of adventures which were produced
for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
