Today, I talk a little about the Winnie-the-Pooh book that Brian E. Drake has translated into Ido. Those who have read my articles know that Brian’s talented translations are not new here. Personally, I have used them in learning Ido. Because of my dyslexia, I often put some text from Brian’s translation with the English text. In this way, it is easier for me to compare the text. Of course, this procedure is not necessary for people without learning challenges.

As we know, translations are not verbatim. This is how we, at least I, need to know the verbatim translation of an Ido word. Now there is a convenient solution for that: I converted the dictionary edited by Dyer in 1924, updated by Brian E. Drake in 2024, into PDF format. You can read it here and, if necessary, open the dictionary in a browser for easier browsing.

PS Not many people know that L. L. Zamenhof was the first Esperantido in the world

1894 Esperanto Reform Project

In 1894, L. L. Zamenhof, who was the original creator of the constructed language Esperanto, proposed a complete series of reforms to Esperanto (in other words, an Esperantido). Mi ambulabam apud ripa – I Was Walking by the River Bank.

I tried out how Suno.ai pronounces Latin. With some mixed success, but that’s probably because the inflection of nouns and adjectives follows Giuseppe Peano’s instructions. His method brings the words closer to Spanish and Italian, so Suno.ai has work to do. I’m still relatively happy with the pronunciation. I intentionally misspelled some words that would be easier to pronounce.

Background to this poem and drawing

I moved from Helsinki to Tornio in 1977. My girlfriend at the time, later my wife, didn’t like the big city. We decided to move to her hometown. We divorced in 1989. Our only son moved south years ago and eventually ended up in Helsinki.

At first, when I moved here, I always heard that I was a train wreck or a southerner. Fortunately, I have made friends and acquaintances who have never hinted that I am from the south. Perhaps, however, settling here has never taken root in me. I would like to have a burial place in Helsinki, where my old friends, with whom I have kept in touch over the years, and relatives are.

Now I have to move out of the rented apartment I have lived in since 1993. I will definitely find an apartment here somewhere, but the south has been on my mind for some years. Going there has been prevented because it is almost impossible to find a rental apartment there. The desire has been tempered so far by the fact that I have had a secure apartment here. It was a big surprise when the landlord said he would sell the apartment after decades. It is unclear when he will be able to sell this apartment, because the housing market is not very active at the moment.

Now I am wondering whether I should leave immediately or wait for the termination. I have an apartment in mind that I should decide to move to in the next few days. I once read an article that stated that moving is one of the most stressful factors for people. As I recall, it was among the five most stressful, but at that time, the move also involved a change of location.

A surprising year is about to begin, which is not without its problems, as I am already 74 years old. Fortunately, at least I am healthy at the moment, and moving is possible in that sense. Writing poetry and drawing gave me a momentary forgetfulness of this situation.

Still, have a good start to the new year to everyone, and yes, we will somehow get through this. It has always been the case that new situations are terrifying at first. But then you find the strength to face a new challenge.

Abyssus abyssum invocat

is a Latin phrase meaning “deep calls to deep,” taken from Psalm 42:7. It signifies a chain reaction, where one deep or overwhelming problem leads to another, or it can be interpreted spiritually as the human soul calling to God. The phrase is also associated with the idea that confronting a powerful or dark force can lead to being consumed by it, similar to Friedrich Nietzsche’s concept, “When you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you”

My poem is a tragic hero’s way of proving that love is the strongest force. He doesn’t look into the abyss in despair, but in the hope of giving his beloved another chance. Tragic, of course, is his character flaw.

Charmig trots mina brister; Charming Despite My Flaws

De säger att jag inte kan svenska. Då säger jag att jag pratar som jag pratar. Det är mitt signum. Grammatiska fel är min stil. Jag borde ha insett det för tio år sedan. Internet är fullt av människor som gör misstag, men deras personligheter är charmiga trots sina misstag. Svenska är det språk jag använder bäst utan hjälp av läroböcker.

Så här är min dikt, som jag inte har fått korrekturläst någonstans eller av någon.

Sanningen

Jag vaknade
som en ny dag
trots den var kvällen.
Jag är glad
för att min Gud
gillar inte gräl.
Han älskar palestinierna
lika mycket som israelerna.

They say I don’t know Swedish. Then I say I speak the way I speak. That’s my signature. Grammatical errors are my style. I should have realized that ten years ago. The internet is full of people who make mistakes, but their personalities are charming despite their mistakes. Swedish is the language I use best without the help of textbooks.

Here is my poem, which I haven’t had proofread by anyone.

The Truth

I woke up
like a new day,
Even though it was evening.
I am glad
because my God
does not like quarrels.
He loves the Palestinians
as much as the Israelis.

You will know them by their fruits

I, like many others, have been confused by events in the Middle East. The intense media hype in favor of Israel has made me wonder whether I am on the wrong side of demanding a better fate for the Palestinians. Whether God will indeed support the oppressive actions of the Israeli government, not only in Gaza, but also in the West Bank, where the settlers are oppressing.

In such uncertain times, and as someone with little knowledge of the Bible, my guiding principle has been the words of Jesus:
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore, by their fruits you will know them. (Matthew 7:15-20 NKJV).

To better convince people of the validity of my view, I have watched numerous YouTube videos on the subject. Christian Zionists refer to the Bible text: “I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed (Genesis 12:3).” The accompanying videos show that God is not talking about the people of Israel, but about Abraham and his descendants. Israel is mentioned in the Bible after Genesis 12:3.

As you can see, this statistical table was prepared by the Israelis. Still, it clearly states who drove the local population from their homes. However, the weird thing is that many people do not believe that the Jews committed any mass murder. Over a million people were evicted from their homes in 1948. If it wasn’t for the actions of Israeli army, these people must have left to make room for friendly Jews voluntarily.
