Homemade Lunchables!!

Jared LOVES Lunchables.  He never wants to buy lunch and I pack one everyday.  This is actually a blessing in disguise because school lunch is expensive and hard to figure for carbs (diabetes).  Periodically I will go get a Lunchable and send it as a treat for him but, I don’t enjoy doing it because they don’t have much food and they aren’t very healthy.

Well, check this out – we have a Homemade Lunchable option!!  Rubbermaid has come out with LunchBlox, a great system for adults or kids.  I came across this great post at Hip2Save.com – http://hip2save.com/2013/09/26/lunchbox-coupon-roundup-plus-my-favorite-place-to-stock-up-on-items-to-fill-the-lunchbox/

This is what our Lunchable turned out like –

LB1

Crackers, cheese, salami, apples, carrots, ranch dressing, a drink and a treat.  I cut up the apples ahead of time and put them in a ziploc bag with some pineapple juice to coat them. The slices you are seeing have already been cut and sitting in a bag in the fridge all night – and they are not brown!  This is what it looks like all put together –

LB2

The blue piece in the middle is a freezeable blue-ice to keep it all cold and it all snaps together.  We are going to have fun deciding on what to fill this with and Jared is very happy too!!

In case you are interested, there is a $2 off coupon at http://www.buildabetterlunch.com/rubbermaid_lunchblox_coupons_and_offers.html

I am also going to pick one of these up.

Happy (no), Horrid (no), Accepted Anniversary

Just a few thoughts about a day that never goes by unnoticed…

5 years ago today every “normal” we knew changed forever.  On September 18, 2008, Jared was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.  Type 1, not Type 2.  People confuse the two all the time.  People can be quick to tell me how medicine can fix him, or a better diet or exercise.  They think that if they provide something “Sugar-Free” it solves all the existing problems.  But truth is that they just don’t understand and why would you if you didn’t have to?  I have been learning for the last 5 years and sometimes I don’t think I have it all yet.

For anyone just catching up, Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys certain cells in the pancreas.  These cells — called beta cells — normally produce insulin, a hormone that helps the body move the glucose (i.e., sugar) contained in food into cells throughout the body, which use it for energy. But when the beta cells are destroyed, no insulin can be produced and the glucose stays in the blood instead where it can cause serious damage to all the organ systems of the body.  For this reason, people with type 1 diabetes must take insulin in order to stay alive.

What does all this mean to Jared and to us?  It has been 5 years since Jared did not have to schedule his days around checking his blood sugar every 3 hours.  (He has to “test” at least 6 times per day and I test him at least once in the middle of every night).  5 years since Jared could eat snacks or treats provided to him and his classmates/friends without calling me and “bolusing” first.  5 years since Jared had no idea how horrible a low/high blood sugar could feel.  5 years since putting together a meal did not create a complex math problem to figure out the carbohydrates.  5 years since needles weren’t a regular part of his life.  5 years since his little fingers did not look like pin cushions.  5 years since he hasn’t been on a schedule that provides him more stable numbers but often prevents him from eating with other people who have no schedule.  5 years since he has felt like a “normal” kid.

For me it has been 5 years since I have been able to sleep through the night – like I said, I still have to test him at least once per night but if his numbers are high or low then I will be up every hour or so testing him until all is good.  It has been 5 years since hearing a siren when Jared is not with me didn’t send a moment of worry through me.  5 years of trying to provide the most healthy, happy life possible for Jared free of all worries I can eliminate.  I try to shoulder most of it because it has never felt “fair” that such a young boy has to do all he does.  People look at Jared as he sets a treat aside to save for later and think of what a responsible, mature young man he is.  What they don’t see is the young child on the inside screaming that, “it’s not fair” because he is always different.  My trainers always tell me that I am too tense, that I need to breathe and drop my shoulders – relax.  What they don’t know is that that word was removed from my vocabulary 5 years ago.  I know that all mothers worry about their children but I can tell you that Diabetes took it to another level.  And yes, I am stressed, all. . . the. . . time.   Yes, it is part of who I am but I have seen my baby at extreme blood sugar lows and I have seen him so high that he is violently ill.  This equals stress.

Don’t get me wrong.  Jared is a happy, adjusted 9 year old who leads a mostly normal life.  He is strong and healthy – much of which he attributes to the good side of having such a horrible disease.  He can read a nutrition label like few others!  He knows how to fit a treat into a meal that is well rounded otherwise.   He can recognize unhealthy habits around him and makes amazing choices in the midst of that.  Like his brother, Jared is more sensitive to other people and their struggles and their needs.  He knows how it feels to be on the outside and he doesn’t like to see others there for any reason.  But we have our moments, our moments of fear, of sadness, anger and despair.   All those feelings pass but they creep up sometimes.

A couple of days ago Jared told me that he really hopes that they find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.  Greg and I still believe they will within Jared’s lifetime.  Until then we plug on, we hold our heads high and look at the positives, we are grateful that this is manageable and we are grateful for Jared.

And the magic lives on…

The following is a conversation I had with Jared recently.  I was telling him about one of his cousins (6 yrs old) who is questioning Santa’s existence and being very vocal about it to a younger sibling.  I was using it to feel out where Jared was in his belief level.

Me – “Can you believe that?  Have you ever heard of a kid who doesn’t believe in Santa?”

Jared – “Well back when I was in daycare there was a boy who said that Santa, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny and all that wasn’t real.”

Me – “What did you say to him?”

Jared – “I didn’t say anything to him, I just thought to myself, “What, you think the parents put the presents out and eat the cookies and drink the milk and eat the carrots for the reindeer and then write us a note?!?!?  Come on people!!”

It took a lot of work to not burst out laughing.  And the magic lives on…

A Couple of Gems. . .

Greg and Nick went on a scout camp out this last weekend. They have been gone on various youth activities the past few weekends. Trying to make it fun for Jared too I asked him, “If you could go anywhere you want for dinner, where would it be?”.

He thought for a moment and then said, “Well, I would want my hometown.”.

I said, “Hometown Buffet, huh?” (Because it is his favorite restaurant.)

Jared replied, “No, my hometown of Roseville.”

I didn’t even have the heart to point out that while he was born there, we left when he was only 6 months old. Guess I need to take the boy to Roseville soon…

Tonight I was running and Nick was with me on his bike. I told him that I would like to lose about 10 lbs before Tough Mudder in September. Pulling 10 lbs less over under and through those obstacles is a nice thought! I told him that I would have to Be better and then get really strict a couple months out. Then I pointed out that I would have to cut out the ice cream at night. I thought for sure he would come back with something like an offer to eat my share. Instead, Nick said, “Well, then I will have to stop eating it too to help you.” Seriously?!?! He is going to be the best coach ever! I don’t deserve this kid…

I wanna be like Nick!!

A couple of weeks ago, Nick hurt his left hand ring finger playing basketball. It is still very painful and yesterday we immobilized it with a Popsicle stick and tape.

This morning, Jared got up before anyone else and took matters into his own hands to be like Nick –

Look Mom – I’m Riding!!

We really thought Jared would learn to ride a bike early because he has a big brother and would want to keep up.  Yeah, not so much.  Jared was very content to tool around on his scooter and big wheel.  We had tried to teach him several times but had just given up in the end, usually in frustration.

Labor Day Weekend – 2011

On Sunday, Jared was expressing a desire to go to Hometown Buffet.  I told him that they had a Breakfast Buffet the next morning for Labor Day and if he learned to ride his bike I would take him.  I thought a little motivation would be a good thing and it was.

We took Jared’s pedals off and let him walk the bike around for awhile.  I had left for about 45 minutes and when I got back – there he was – riding his bike – FINALLY!!

Greg caught video of the long awaited moment –

So, on Labor Day morning we were at

And a certain Jedi was very happy –

With that smile and him on a bike – money well spent!

Yard Sale Time!!

On a little side note – my blog program just told me that my post before this one was #400 for my blog.  Wow – thanks for coming along with us on this ride!

Recently the boys wanted to have a yard sale.  They wanted to sell some of their toys that they no longer played with.  As it ended up, the yard sale was a pretty big bust but Craigslist was a big success!  Nick sold all of his Bakugan and is currently saving his money.  Good Boy.

Jared made a decision that broke my heart a little – he started letting go of some toys that truly begin the end of his “little boy” years.  *sigh*  Here are some of the big sets he sold –

His original plan was to go buy a newer set in this same line.  When we took him to the store he made a decision that Greg and I loved much more –

LEGOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  He bought Sponge-Bob Legos!

And then he put them together all by himself –

Verdict is in! I have ruined my child!!

Jared has 3 little votive candle holders, like these –

Image

But, he doesn’t have candles in them, he has blue glass stones, sorta like these –

Image

Last night he dropped one and of course the votive broke and stones went everywhere.  I carried him out of the broken glass, cleaned up the mess and took the stones into his room with a promise to get another votive holder.

Now, mind you, it was Jared’s bedtime and he was in bed and should have been going to sleep.  But soon I heard a little noise, clink, clink, clink.  I went to his room and found that he had emptied out his two remaining votives and was putting the stones back in, “one in this one and one in that one”.  I asked him what he was doing.  Imagine my shock and inability to speak when he told me that he was making them even.

I have instilled enough of an anal retentive nature in my son that he couldn’t go to sleep until he knew there were an even number of stones in each votive.  I left the room without a word and went back in after he was asleep to take a picture –

Greg is not going to let me live this one down…  😉

You say it’s your birthday…

Jared William Wright – born July 6, 2004.  He was our little Slurpee baby because he was 7 lbs, 11 oz.  Today he turned 7 years old.  I don’t know if it is possible to have a better birthday.  Here is how it went…

We got up early and were all at Denny’s by shortly after 7:00 a.m. to collect Jared’s free Grand Slam Breakfast!!

Image

Then I dropped Jared off at his summer camp where he went on a field trip to see Cats and Dogs in the Theater.  He returned to the camp center for lunch and was then surprised when Nick and I picked him up just before 1:00.  Jared had asked me to get off work early one day, pick him up and spend the rest of the day with him.  His birthday seemed like the perfect day.

Nick and I took him to Fun Zone (used to be Chuck E. Cheese) where we got a bunch of tokens and played games and won tickets!  Nick dedicated all tickets he would win to Jared to get a prize for his birthday.  Nick immediately won 250 on one of the first games he played.  I asked him to show me the game, he played again and won another 250.  Not a bad start!  Then Jared played a few and did pretty well himself…

Image

One of the last games we played was a jackpot for Jared and I as we won about 700 tickets!  Kids just kept standing around watching the tickets come out of the machine…

Image

209 still to go!

Jared and I went to enter all our tickets into the machine that counts them for you and gives you a receipt with the total.  All the kids in the place were crowding around waiting for the total – I could barely breathe and was getting a little claustrophobic…

Image

Nick got this picture – you can’t even see me (I am in the middle).

The total number of tickets was – – – 1850!!!!!  Score!  True to form Jared used the tickets to get two 800 ticket prizes, one for him and one for Nick.  Good Boy!  They gave Jared a balloon as a gift and we were off to run a couple of errands.

Image

We had to stop at Raley’s for a few things and Jared got his free cookie from the bakery.  This balloon is the one from Fun Zone.  It was over 100 degrees outside and we were afraid it would pop in the car.  It led to a funny story.  We were walking through the freezer section when the weights came off and the balloon sailed up to the ceiling.  Jared was devastated!  We found an employee and asked if they had any way to get it down.  She said she could go get a tall ladder.  She came back with a large 3 step stool saying the ladder was too big to bring out.  She tried to reach it and was not even close.  Being much taller than her I asked her to let me try and to look away if necessary – I could have cared less about the liability worries for them.  I just needed that balloon.  She let me go up and my fingers were just barely grazing the string.  A little more stretching, a little pull in the back and I got it!  All worth it because Jared was so thankful…

Did you know that 7 year olds grow mustaches?  Wow.

Image

We got to hang out at home for an hour and then went with Nick for his swim lessons.  He is doing really good!  After that we went home, changed Jared’s pump site, dealt with a bloody nose and headed off to Hometown Buffet for birthday dinner! This is what Jared’s plate looks like after going back for seconds – yes, he serves himself…

Image

They sang Happy Birthday to him, he had some ice cream and a cupcake and we were good to go!

PRESENT TIME!!!!!!

Image

I kinda ran out of wrapping paper on the last gift I wrapped.  This is Jared asking, “Really Mom?!?”

Image

Like his older brother, Jared doesn’ t show much emotion as he opens gifts so I was really happy to snap this smile as he opened a new video game for XBOX Kinect.

Image

Here is the birthday boy with all his haul.  Happy Birthday Jared!!!  We love you very much!
