- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2025I love Maria's work. She is brilliant and insightful. Her interpretations of the gods', goddesses' and place names give some mind blowing insights into the myths. She just about has me convinced that the Vikings knew about electric and electrical circuits! Well worth every penny! It's not an easy read. This is not because she doesn't speak plainly, but because with her insights.....I'm going down a rabbit hole reading the Eddas and discovering much deeper meanings to the stories. Definitely material for someone with some knowledge on the Norse Myths, or the book will not make much sense to you.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2015Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI have just finished the book. The text was clear but light in some areas, though some sections had a grey background that added to this. The cover is beautiful and bound well. I had no problems with pages coming loose even though I took the book with me to several different places, sometimes shoved into a bag.
Pros: The information is amazing. She is able to clarify so many things that seem muddled together in the mythology. Issues that seem to perplex Gundarsson in Elves, Wights, and Trolls, or in many articles contained within the Tyr volumes, Kvilhaug is able to explain in a clear, insightful manner. Honestly, she makes many of the well known writers within Asatru appear amateurish, and shows how a pre-concieved worldview will color your understanding of the lore. I will not get into my own views of how and why that has infiltrated so much of Asatru today but will instead just make one statement: Christian baggage isn't the only baggage people bring to the table and seeing Odin as a replacement for Satan or just as lawless is ignorant. She also wipes away many of the issues between hardcore polytheists and those who take a more gnostic/universal source approach, and she does so rationally and historically. I cannot recommend this book enough. It changed many of my perceptions, erased the seeming contradictions, and re-focused my own spirituality beyond Odin.
Cons:The introduction is long, repetitive and badly edited. There are typos throughout, but especially in the intro. Honestly, you can skip the intro as anything overstated in it will be restated in the text. The first couple of chapters, being an overview of the information are dense, and if you are not that familiar with the myths and the strangeness of the names to an English speaking tongue (I am American) it will seem confusing. Once you get into the chapters after these this information will be parsed out and focused on in much smaller bites. I say it is a con, but it is a necessary one and is why we are a religion that requires homework. She sometimes focuses on a feminist stance, but it is not so great as to destroy the scholarship. Some of her interpretations are very literal, but phrased oddly. This I think is mostly due to the fact that what would sound OK to her in English sounds silly to an English speaker. Again, this does not take away from the intended meaning of the translations. While I may disagree with some of her interpretations they are minor disagreements.
I would recommend this book for any student of religion, practitioner of Asatru, or the curious. It breaks many molds, focuses on a scholastic viewpoint and is obviously a labor of love for the author. If I had the funds I would buy this for several people. If you are Asatru then please support one of our brightest theologians.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2013Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe information deserves 5 full stars. This particular edition of the book however, only gets 3 stars, in part because there are simply things I expect out of a $50 book--and one of them is crisp, clear text. Instead, there are many places where he text is faded, like a bad photo copy and difficult to read. Rather than solid lines, the letters are made up of cross-hatching, a lot like the old dot matrix printers. Likewise, many of the illustrations look more like faded photo copies than the kind of illustrations one would expect to find a recently published (and rather expensive) book.
So far, the binding seems solid at least, but it's only just arrived; only time will tell if it's solid or not.
Again, the material is excellent, well presented, well organized, and very readable, yet thoroughly researched. But if I had it to do over again, I would buy the less expensive edition because this *isn't* worth he money as presented. Frankly, the publisher should be ashamed of themselves for turning out such a sub-standard product.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseA realy authentic Scandinavian written interpretation of a very misunderstood subject. Viking hidden lore. This book by Maria Kvilhaug is a great help to all that are seeking knowledge and understanding of names within the Old Norse legends, sagas and edda's, she explains the gods and goddeses that all play a huge part in the old norse, pre chistendom, cultural psyche. A wonderful solid work, worth a read for sure if you like real history of the Vikings.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWe are indebted to Maria Kvilhaug’s dedication to this work. I am extremely grateful to have found her books and I continue to collect them all. Her understanding and explanations of the Sagas and Eddas have given me deeper insight into the religion and culture of my ancestors. May her efforts continue with great reward! Hail Maria Kvilhaug!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2015Format: HardcoverVerified Purchasei wish i could give lady kvilhaug 5 stars and her book publisher 1. i don't want to punish her for the crap quality of her book printer but the quality of her information is poorly represented by the quality of this book. let me explain what has been explained already:
1)her information and ideas are wonderful! truly great stuff, and i am thrilled reading it. she has true and deep understanding of norse lore.
2)the book quality, from a physical perspective, is crap. poorly produced, the texture of the cover alone makes me cringe. it feels like its covered in fine dust, but its just the texture of the paper. one of those nails on chalkboard kind of feelings. most importantly the printing itself is so faded and light and pixelated that it almost makes it a pain to bother with. no crisp dark writing. just a faded greyish pixely print that makes me wonder how they justify charging so much for the book.
i read from other reviewers that the print issue was there, but blew it off. i have seen a tendency for amazon reviewers to be a bit ridiculous and over dramatic at times. but they really were spot on with this. its sad, since the book itself is so awesome.
so that being said, buyer beware. this is a really wonderful read, but your gonna need a bright light and some patience to do it. a 5 star book for sure, but 1 star knocked off for quality.

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI've spent most of my life fascinated by the Viking age, but I've never been that thrilled about the mythology as a subject. In this book, Maria really grabbed my attention and made me start to think about the deeper meanings in the way she translated all the names, which suddenly makes the often weird stories come alive in new ways. Marie's theories are very valid and a great contribution to the subject. The only negative I have is that the publisher really needs to lift their game when it comes to proofreading, this is quite a massive book , and there is far too many typos and mistakes that have could've easily be fixed by somebody just taking the time to proof read. This work is far too good to have people put off by such little things. Also, Maria, I wish you were more accessible on Facebook, Instagram and other places, myself and many others would really like the chance to be in dialogue with you! Cheers and all the best and can't wait for your next work!

Fascinating, read it over a year.
Lawrence LivingstoneReviewed in Italy on June 16, 20253.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book but... Problems with this edition.
This book is amazing, it is a must read if you love Norse myths and everyone should read it.
But this edition is really bad, the kindle edition is impossible to be read by my kindle (that is brand new). And the paperback have serious print problems and damages.
Counting that I paid 40 euros for it, I'm not at all happy. At least I will be able to read it.

Lesley Anderson-PomeroyReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 1, 20235.0 out of 5 stars great content needs an editor
Format: PaperbackVerified Purchasewonderful content and interpretation but there is no index and a lot of typos. some of the chapters are from YouTube lectures so the transcription is of a more informal speaking style. but an index would help greatly. there is also a lot of repetition. but overall the book is very much worth it.
I'm adding this 6 months later: I've now read this book a couple times thru, more than twice in some chapters. It's very, very good. Things I read quickly the first time have much deeper meaning upon re-reading. I really appreciate the work she's doing. She is extremely thorough and dedicated to her research. Even though the book needs editing it doesn't diminish the quality overall of her work. I've gone on to read and follow more of her work and my respect for her has only increased.
