- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved the characters from this book. Cinnamon is a nicely rounded out heroine, some comedy, some tragedy, some kindness and some meanness. She comes across as someone you would like to meet. That she preferred a drunken ex boyfriend to a squeaky clean doctor is part of her charm. The mystery was scary enough to keep you interested, but mild enough to stay a "cozy." I liked the dog. He was a vehicle through out the story ... catching her interest as a stray, leading her to the body, and a sympathetic pooch. The epilogue written in the dog's voice seemed a little weird to me. Overall, loved the book and will read the next one in her series.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed this book that's one of the longest time books on my TBR. Christmas time, cozy gingerbread houses and a competition...along with a dead body that someone was trying to frame Cinnamon Peters for to either distract her or keep her out of the yearly competition.
I right away guessed the killer but have to admit I had a couple of doubts along the way. Cinnamon had a sweet reunion with someone from her past, and I loved how the book ended. I'm definitely going to read on in the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2017Christmas River, a small town in Oregon, is about to hold its annual Gingerbread Junction Competition and Cinnamon plans on winning this year. Unfortunately a few days before the competition, a judge is found dead and it looks like someone is trying to pin it on Cinnamon. Can she clear her name and win the competition or will she lose more than the Gingerbread title?
This is a cute but predictable Christmas cozy. I had it on my Kindle for the longest time and decided right before the holidays to give it a go. The characters were somewhat developed. I feel like even though this was the first in series, there was a lot of backstory missing and questions left unanswered so I didn't quite get a feel for the majority of individuals in the story. Also the mystery itself was pretty simplistic. It didn't take a lot of sleuthing to figure out who the killer was even when the author attempted to throw you off. I still enjoyed the book though and it was a nice, quick, light-hearted read for the holidays.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt was pretty good. There is not a lot of mystery, but it is and enjoyable introduction to the characters of Christmas River. The story revolves around the annual gingerbread house decorating contest; the event is such a big deal that the prize is tickets to Hawaii.
Cinnamon loves running her a pie shop in the small tourist town of Christmas River, but after two years of divorce she is still not satisfied with herself or the romantic portion of her life. When a old romantic interest returns to town, and she thinks another guy is going to ask her out, things start getting complicated; I repeat, things just start to get complicated. Following a stray dog she is trying to befriend, she discovers a dead body in the woods behind her shop. The body turns out to be the one judge of the contest that she can not stand. She is already seriously stressed when the old friend who broke up her marriage shows up flashing an engagement ring, signs up for the Gingerbread Junction contest, and talks of opening a bakery, she feels like she has reached the end of her rope and that is before she discovered the sheriff suspects her of murder. All-round not a great week for Cinnamon, but an entertaining cozy read for us.
This books is the first in a series, and I look forward to more of Cinnamon and Daniel and more mystery in the next one, Mayhem in Christmas River.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI chose this book as a bit of light reading after something far too heavy. I never expected to love it this much….but I am a big lover of cozy mysteries…..and that was a totally unfair tactic with that meat pie at the end. No spoilers, but totally unfair.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI just finished reading Murder in Christmas River: A Christmas Cozy Mystery by Meg Muldoon. What a lovely, charming book. True to its name - cozy. I use the BookBub app on my tablet and the best thing about it is finding such great new authors to read after downloading their free offer of books. After reading that one, I have gone and downloaded all their other books. That's how it was with these books. This one was riveting, fast paced and delectable. Cinnamon Peters owns a pie shop in Christmas River, Oregon. Already caught up in the excitement of the Christmas River Gingerbread Junction Competition, our baker gets sidetracked with a murder investigation of one of the longtime judges from the competition, with the body having been found right in her backyard. He was a judge that Cinnamon had no kind words for. Along with being accused of the murder, she is hit for a loop when an old acquaintance from her past shows up. A man who had broken her heart 17 years earlier when he walked out of her life. Muldoon's descriptions of Christmas River make me want to visit the town where it is Christmas every day of the year. This book really gives you a feeling of what small town living is like. Where everyone knows everyone else. Cinnamon Peters is a character I am going to enjoy getting to know better as I read the other Christmas Cozy Mystery books in this series, along with all of her neighbors. Open up one of Meg Muldoon's books for yourself and join me. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Hoener, BirgitReviewed in Germany on June 8, 20162.0 out of 5 stars self-pity party instead of a murder mystery
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat to say without sounding too harsh? Maybe it was the narration style I could not get into, which would put a damper on the rest of the book. However, I found the protagonist, a pie-shop owner, to be a whining thirty-something, wallowing in self-pity about wrongs done in the past, and basically not growing up, still with that high-school mentality. She and the other characters were too much of a stereotype, and not even a bit individual, or even well developed.
Considering the whole thing was to be a "cosy murder mystery" - see the title - it surprised me to find that after the murder happened in the prologue, it took half the book for the body to be found. The second half then flew past, unfortunately not in a gripping-the-reader fashion, but in that the idiotic village sheriff suspects our protagonist, her high-school sweetheart who happens to be a cop (or ex-cop? I could not figure that out) of course is much better equipped to solve murder mysteries, you have the ex-husband with his new bimbo, several competitors of some gingerbread house contest, there was too much of everything stereotype, and not enough, let me call it "flesh", to the story.
Events and reactions were not explained enough to the reader; the dog surviving severe winter storms - how? The ex-friend from high-school: cop or not? I could go on and on.
There was no "evidence" leading to the murderer, no trail to follow, so to say. Even an idiotic stupid sheriff does not jump to conclusion like that! No logical explanations were given.
Sorry, but I was very disappointed by this book: I expected - as promised in the title - a murder mystery, and not a main character wallowing in self-pity about events in her life, basically living in the past, whose only involvement in the murder is the murdered person's dog (who is miracle dog to have survived so long) she feeds, and that the body was found somewhere behind her shop. The murder, I got the impression, was only shortly mentioned from time to time, like an afterthought (oops still got that body, I better have it discovered and someone accused).
In short: the story lacked a proper murder mystery, it lacked order and, I am sorry to say, it lacked a plot. If that had been in school, with an essay to write fitting the title, it would have failed utterly!
Kylie AtkinsonReviewed in Australia on December 27, 20185.0 out of 5 stars Better than cozy
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI wanted something quick and Christmas-y in between a series I’m reading. The blurb said cozy but I felt like it was better than that. A very enjoyable read with characters I become invested in. I’ve definitely found another series to enjoy.
LouiseReviewed in the United Kingdom on December 26, 20155.0 out of 5 stars Murder in Christmas river
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a real good under mystery keeps you guessing all the way through, although you do get an inkling of what is the truth behind the story it's still a guessing game. The outcome is good and the ending makes it really worthwhile.
sangeeta deviReviewed in India on December 25, 20154.0 out of 5 stars Ek anar, sau bimar. Murder is somewhere in the background. :D
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA small town with a yearly Gingerbread House Competition. Two fierce competitors. A love story with three men after the lady; the ex-husband, the podiatrist, the ex-would-have-been-boyfriend-if-hadn't-left-town. Sweet story. Though it is Book 1 of a series it is also a standalone book and there are no cliffhangers.
DonnabReviewed in Canada on January 16, 20185.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Who Done It
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAlthough this is the first book in the Christmas River series I have already read the second book on the series. It didn't after as the stories tied in together and I enjoyed meeting up with the characters again. They feel like friends that you are catching up with again - Cinnamon and her pies, Kara and her fiery personality and of course am introduction to Huckleberry. I look forward to reading book #3.
