Drum up the Dawn: Galaxy Girl Book One Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars (299)

To most people, Kenzie Shepherd appears to be a slightly nerdy reporter for Emerald City Media, with close friends and a noticeably over-protective big sister. In reality, she’s a super-powered alien refugee who arrived on Earth as a tween and has passed as human ever since. When her editor asks her to interview Ava Westbrook, chief operations officer at Hyperion Tech, Kenzie is understandably nervous about meeting the heir to the most notorious anti-alien family in America. She certainly doesn’t expect Ava to announce that she wants to transform her family’s company into a force for good. But is Ava really as different from her alien-hating brother and father as she seems?

When she agreed to take her mother’s place at Hyperion’s Seattle office, Ava Westbrook was hoping to turn over a new leaf both for the embattled corporation and for her family's name. But with a hostile board and equally antagonistic CEO thwarting her sustainable energy plans, the path to change looks murky. Add in the highly inconvenient crush she has developed on a local reporter, and Ava is certain she is swimming out of her depth. And what is her mother up to, anyway?

Drum up the Dawn is the first book in a new urban fantasy series that takes place on an Earth where alien refugees live on the fringes of society, Kenzie Shepherd may well be the last daughter of a long-dead planet, and Ava Westbrook wishes everyone could just get along.

I really liked this book it was a great read with characters that I came to care about. The storyline was well paced and the characters well done. It’s definitely a fan fic to my eyes and I’m sure others noticed that too. Having said that it’s very well done with solid writing throughout and I enjoyed reading this a lot. I’d loved to see what happens next. :)

The bad news about this book is that it ended far too soon but I can see where it is setting up for some serious alien twists and turns in book 2. I will surely read any subsequent volumes in this series. The writing was sharp and witty and kept me laughing throughout. I enjoyed the back and forth between Kenzie and her sister Sloane. All the conversations were realistic and entertaining and/or serious when they needed to be. The dialogue was modern with references to music, movies and tv shows we all love and/or hate. The author introduces the concept of aliens living among us but with a group of earthlings not happy about the matter. One unregistered alien in particular Kenzie transforms into a superhero and we get to take the ride with her. In addition, another delightful aspect of this story is her growing interest and affection for Ava Westbrook. There is a lot to unpack in this storyline – just read and enjoy. This is a book you will not regret picking up.

What a gem of an author. So glad I found Galaxy Girl. This was a fun, intriguing concept and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Characters complimented the storyline. The romance developed slowly as the main characters came to terms with their different lives. I'm off to read the next book in the series. Looking forward to seeing more from Kate Christie!

Aliens. Social justice. Superheroes. Friendship. And a whole lot of delicious gay angst.

This story is told from two perspectives, and yet the pacing never suffers. The characters are fun and have realistic flaws, and just because they're the protagonists doesn't mean they don't have some flawed world views.

The transitions are a bit abrupt (time changes aren't announced by any punctuation or extra spacing), but that's really my only quibble.

30% superheroing, 10% interplanetary politics and, and 60% gay angst. 8.5/10, though I'm thinking I'll enjoy the sequel even more.

I was hesitant to buy the book because I'm usually not a reader and I wasn't sure to what extend the book would "overlap" with the show. When I started reading the first page, I couldn't stop and wanted to finish it right away. The first book is an excellent build up for the storyline which continues in the second book. The character building is on point! I really recommend this book.

It ended far too quickly. (or I read it too fast) I liked geeky Kenzie (my cat's name). Some of the book seemed familiar, powerful being from another planet, orphaned etc. Nevertheless it was crafted into its own. Looking so forward to book two.

The story is not unique but definitely didn’t feel like I’d read it before. Lots of unanswered questions at the end but not because of some annoying twists right out of left field. Looking forward to book 2.

According to Christie her latest is loosely based on some of the Super Girl fan fiction she wrote a few years ago. Although there are some underlying similarities to the TV series this book is an entertaining romp with subtle discussion of culture and societal issues. Kenzie Shepherd is our superhero (adorably geeky) and up to this point in her life has pretty much kept herself and her powers under wraps until well, suddenly she isn’t. The chemistry between Kenzie and Ava Westbrook is palatable from their first meeting and it is fun to watch it all unfold. I’m already looking forward to Book Two.

For those of you who haven't read any of my previous reviews on Christie's books I'm a big fan of her work and highly recommend them all.
