I Can See for Miles and Miles

Now I'm logging my miles in two places. First I signed up for BeeWellMiles.com - because they donate 15¢ for every mile to Breast Cancer Network of Strength.  I figured since I'm already walking, those miles might as well count for something.  The site, of course, have all kinds of other resources and helps for getting fit and healthy, but so far I'm just logging the miles.

Then, right after I signed up for BeeWellMiles, they started a new walking plan where Jeffrey works.  I suppose it's some kind of competition because they have teams, and everyone is supposed to log their miles at this American Heart Association site.  Anyway, they said spouses could sign up too so I'm on the team.  The funny thing is that I don't think Jeff has walked once since this thing started.  He's just been so busy at work - going in early, etc.  I guess that's why they wanted me on the team, so they'll get some miles logged!

The BeeWellMiles thing started April 1, and the work thing started April 8 - so I've got 32 miles logged on the first site, and 22 on the other one.  There were some missed days because it's spring, and there's been rain.

I've been doing pretty well at keeping up with it because I've got both sites set as my home page(s) - on separate tabs.  So, when I open my browser, those sites open and remind me to log my miles.  It works pretty well.  Better than going a week or two and then trying to remember which days I walked or didn't walk so I could post it here and keep track of the miles on my shoes.  Speaking of those shoes - I'm over 400 miles on them.  The soles still look pretty good, a little wear on the heels but not bad.  Still, they're not as comfortable as they should be, so I think I'm going to start using the newer shoes soon.  These are still in good enough shape that I can wear them just for general wear - like to the store, library and such.

Of Rice & Movies

I'm sitting here playing the Free Rice vocabulary game while watching National Treasure.   So far tonight, I have donated 1000 grains of rice.  My vocab level is 43, and my highest level was 44 - but I missed some along the way.  This thing really is addictive.  As I was playing I started wondering who counts out these grains of rice that are being donated?  Yes, I know, they probably just weigh it - so many grains of rice equals so many ounces, or something like that.

Since Jeffrey doesn't have to work tomorrow, we're going to go see National Treasure Book of Secrets - so that's why we're watching the first one tonight, to get in the mood, and remind us of what happened.  It's history, science, action-adventure, and Nicolas Cage all rolled up into one.  Very enjoyable movie.  I hope the new one is as good.  We will not be getting reserved seats at the movie theater - not after last weekend when we went to see I Am Legend.  I wonder if we'll need to get there early and wait in line?  How many people actually go to the movies on Christmas?  Isn't it supposed to be family time or something?  The day in between shopping and returning everything set aside for resting up?  And, speaking of that, why is it that everything is closed - except the movie theaters?

What if I need to buy milk?  I might need milk.  It's weird how I really don't want to go anywhere, usually, but I hate the idea of not being able to, because everything is closed.

Free Rice

or, How you can improve your vocabulary and end world hunger, too.

I found this on A Mom's Life at Neenmachine.com today.

Now you can improve your vocabulary, for free,, and help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people at the same time. Simply visit FreeRice.com and play the very addictive vocabulary game. The FreeRice database has thousands of words at varying degrees of difficulty. It automatically adjusts to your vocabulary level. When you get a word wrong, you go to an easier level. When you get three words in a row right, you go to a harder level. They say that this one-to-three ratio is best for keeping you at the “outer fringe” of your vocabulary, where learning can take place.  You can set the options so that the site remembers you when you come back, and you can start again at the level where you left off.

How does improving your vocabulary help end world hunger? For every word you get right, FreeRice donates 20 grains of rice through the United Nations to end world hunger.  So, the better your vocabulary gets, the more people you can feed.  Besides, there are all kind of other benefits to having a good vocabulary.

Yes, if there's a clear separation that could work. I'm a bit worried about the freedom of religion thing too, but maybe if it was very very clear that there's a difference between the government's…
