Pompeys Pillar-Jackson's Field Trip-A Little History Lesson

I was able to go on a class field trip with JACKSON'S third grade class today. We went to Pompeys Pillar. The place is a national monument which William Clark named after Sacajawea's son. Pomp was the name given to Jean Baptiste by the explorers. It is a big rock formation. On the Lewis and Clark expedition, Clark and Lewis were separated, and Clark autographed his name on this rock. (Wm Clark July 25, 1806)ImageJackson was amazed that Clark knew how to write in cursive.

Image
The Indians named this rock "sleeping lion rock". You can see the mouth and nose on the left, and a white looking eye just to the right, his back, then tale at the end.

Project of the week: Make a quilt

This week I needed to get a quilt made for a friend, Crystal, who is getting baptized this Saturday. She asked me to give the talk on the Holy Ghost. I thought it would be fun to give her a nice quilt along with the talk.
Mom came to visit this past weekend to see the dance recital of Aliza and Maren (to be posted later) and Sammy in his piano recital and Jackson play baseball. When I picked her up from the airport, I mentioned that I needed to pick out some fabric for a quilt. Well, she said, "Let's go right now and look for it." I wasn't sure, she had just got off the airplane, and had just got back from Arizona the day before. I thought we should go home and let her rest. Well, Janice would not have it. She said, "I'm fine, lets get it done so we can start working on it." So, we took a couple of hours and went to a few fabric stores and found the perfect material for Crystal. Mom was ready to go home and rest. Good thing Jackson's game was cancelled.
Saturday mom sewed the materials together while I was at the dress rehersal with the girls.Image She wanted to help me get it on the quilting frames and ready to tie before she left for home on Monday.
Image I guess after thinking about it, she decided to stay until Tuesday and help me tie and finish the edging. I think she was worried I didn't know what I was doing. She was right. I think I would have figured it out, but it was very nice to have her there, telling me step by step what needed to be done next. We got it tied and the edging done on Monday, just in time for her to watch one of Jackson's baseball games.

Image
I am so thankful for mom in helping me with my project of the week. I know it would have taken longer than two days to get it done if it wasn't for her.
Thank you MOM!!!

Front Door Birds Nest

I have seen a Robin fly into our porch from time to time. I presumed she was stealing berries from my door hang. This morning the kids saw the bird, went outside to look at it, and discovered a nest she had been making.Image

Thanks to Cara's insight on her blog
I got some great ideas and actually tried one on Maren. I liked how she had styles for all sorts of hair. What do you think? Image
Image Maren loved it and wants to do another style tomorrow.
I just need to get some cute bows to go with the cute hair.

To our Mothers

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY...
JANICE AND LARAE
Image
Mother- daughter Merry Miss activity May 1979
Sam and I want to thank our mothers for all they have done to nourish, love, and teach us all that we know.
Image Easter Sunday April, 1971
Caption reads: Sammy and his Mama

Image Sorry Aaron, this was the only family picture I had.

They were mothers to many children, Janice 10 and LaRae 9.

Image

LaRae is no longer with us, she passed away 5 1/2 years ago due to cancer. We have great memories of her as a mother and mother-in-law and miss her terribly. She always had a beautiful smile on her face and loved and accepted everyone. I am so thankful for her insight in knowing that Sam should take me out. She bugged him and bugged him to take me out. She told him, "Take Becca out just once, that's all I'm asking." I'm thankful that Sam listened to his mother and took me out. That's all it took.

Janice has been a wonderful mother and mother-in-law to us. She has been a great example of living the gospel to the fullest. She is always thinking of others, even when she is sick and weak. She is always on the go, every time I talk to her she has some new adventure in the works...Climbing Mt. Timp. (twice); going on two different missions (Jamaica, Nauvoo); taking in her home, children and other people at different times in their lives; going on many trips...mostly visiting family, but some fun ones as well; and lately, dealing with a recent illness.

We love our mothers!!! Thank you for all you've done for us.

Sam's Feat!!!

Can you guess where this is in the house?
Image

Sam wanted me to post his feat of cleanning his side of the bed.
To Kass from Sam.
No more stacks of books up to the window along the whole wall.
No more dental magazines, church papers, wires, more papers, stuff from his car that I don't know where it came from or where it went, even one goat.
We litterally could not see the floor. It is just all gone!!! I can finally make the bed!

Project of the week: Fake Plants

I wasn't kidding when I said I had two inches of dust on my plants!!!Image BEFORE
(Can you see the "HI" on the leaf?)
Image AFTER

Image Maren was a big help, she dug right in.
We took the plants outside and sang made up songs about helping each other.

Image
2 hours and 5 swiffer dusters later, we got all done!!!
When Sammy got home, he asked if I got new plants.

Image Mind you, these plants are high up on cupboards and armourers, so it is a feat to get all 9 plants down and wipe them off along with other things.

Many of you asked for an after picture of my computer desk. It is still clean!!!!!

Next weeks project? My closet. YIKES!

Family Project

Our Family Project... Burning our pond/ditch.
Saturday, May 3, 2008
Image For scouts, Sammy needed to be in charge of a family project. It just so happen, that we needed our pond/ditch burned before the water came in.
ImageJackson and Sammy loved starting the fires.....before the water was ready.

Sam is making a line of water where the fire should stop. We didn't know if our neighbor wanted his ditch burned.

Image

Pretty good line huh?

Image
Maren was ready with the hose for out of control fires. Mom was there to help as well.
Image

From the road looking toward the hill that was burned near the pond.
Image
Aliza had a hat covering her mouth the whole time. It was very smokey.
Image
Sammy was so fast, I couldn't get a picture of him actually helping. He had to get to a birthday party. Here he is after, ready to get out of here.
Image
All in all it worked out O.K.
Nobody's house caught on fire.
No out of control burns.
AND
We found out a muskrat made it. He was still in his burn covered hole, moving around.
-HOWEVER-
Our house did smell like smoke for two days.
Some of our lawn did get a little torched around the edges.
AND
We did lose a tree limb due to fire.

Goodnight Stories

I know it is late, and I just got done with a previous blog, but Sam is out of town tonight, and I can't sleep. Shocker!

Sam usually tells the kids a story from his childhood while they are settling down at night. So, when I was putting Jackson to bed (at 9:30p.m.(late!!!)) he asked me to tell him a story from my childhood. Now, I have told him some stories before, but at the time I was too tired to really think of a good story. I remembered my journal that I had as a child and went and found it. I went back to the year when I was nine years old, same age as Jackson. I proceeded to read some journal entries. There were some funny things, things I didn't remember and some sad things as well.

Jackson enjoyed my entries. He wanted me to go on, but it was after 10:00. I told him another night. Sammy thought they sounded like Junie B. Jones.

Here are a couple of entries from my journal (spelling and all):

Saterday March 24, 1978

Today we had an Ester egg hunt I got 39 pieaces of candy, Angela got 99 pieaces, Jennifer go 88, Kathryn got 40 or 41 I don't know it. it was fun at night Gary took the fore little kids out to eat.

Sunday April 30, 1978

Today Biship Clark came and thalked to us in church he told funny stuff a little bit I like him after church I whent up thar and shakt his hand and hugged him a little.

Wednesday June 27, 1979

nothing much happend today. But therse one or tow things I have to say Angela likes or (Loves Him) I like him relly much but I say I don't just to make her happy. I like this one boy named John *** (no last names) He flonced (flunked) tow grades. He's 10 yers old well I'm geting tired by
(thought you might like that one Anny)

I could go on forever, maybe next week I'll put in some more entries if you guys want to read more. Let me know, there are some funny stuff in here. I'm just glad we have spell check now.

A Project a Week

I have been trying to be ambitious in getting some projects done around the house, but still fell short, mostly because of time. So, I have decided that if I blog it, I will have to get a project done a week. There have been many things I've wanted to get done, or organized throughout my house. One, being clear off my computer desk. Today it got done!!!!!!! I don't know why I didn't get a before and after picture, but it sure looks good (to me anyway). I put books that didn't belong elsewhere (another one of my projects, organize book shelf). My stacks of color copy paper I put away in a cupboard close by (and organized that as well). I threw tons of stuff away that I did not need sitting there. I put loose cd's that were scattered and stacked around the desk in a nice box and put away. Wires galore, tangled, and who knows what they go to, got put in a clear tote so when we are looking for that special wire, we know where to look. I filed my "file later stack" and got rid of all the dust bunnies that have been building up behind and underneath everything. It only took 2 hours to do.

Next week I will tackle the many fake plants that have 2 inches of dust on them. Or should I wait until mom comes to help me like last time? Just kidding mom, I'll get it done before you come.
