Points were awarded out of a total of 300, with each participant evaluated by three judges, each contributing a maximum of 100 points.

About the challenge

The first-ever BUHACK will focus on "Digital Wellbeing and Productivity." This means participants are encouraged to create projects related to either Digital Wellbeing, Productivity, or both!

To assist you in the ideation process, we have outlined several guiding tracks that align with the theme:

Projects that help users develop daily habits, organize tasks, or enhance focus.

Learning & Education

Projects that support studying, revision, or skill-building.

Campus Life

Solutions designed to improve student life, including navigation, services, community engagement, or campus-related tasks.

Games

Games or interactive experiences that are educational, relaxing, or focused on wellbeing.

Sustainability

Projects that reduce digital clutter and tech-related stress, promoting mindful digital habits.

Psychological Well-Being

Projects that help users manage stress, improve emotional balance, practice mindfulness, or maintain healthier tech-life boundaries.

Custom

Any innovative idea under the theme of Digital Wellbeing & Productivity that does not fit into the above tracks.

BUHACK welcomes all ideas! However, please note that the judging panel will place a stronger emphasis on projects related to the theme of Digital Wellbeing and Productivity, especially for the top awards.

Why BUHack?

Note: Attendance to Inperson Closing Ceremony is mandatory to obtain certificate for the hackathon. 

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate students from all Hong Kong universities

 

What to Build

Participants are encouraged to align their projects with the hackathon theme and develop innovative solutions that effectively showcase their ideas. BUHack is designed to be beginner-friendly and emphasizes creativity, video presentations, design, and technical implementation.

AI Policy

The use of generative AI is permitted during the competition. However, all submissions must clearly indicate any AI utilized to ensure a fair evaluation process for all participants.

Project and Submission Requirements

Each team must submit their project in one of the following formats:

Project Submission Title: Team Name - Project Name

For users using GitHub

Please submit a GitHub repository link containing your complete project.

Requirements:

  • The repository must belong to your team and be created for this hackathon.
  • The repository must be public from the submission deadline until results are announced.
  • The project must show meaningful commits during the hackathon period (from March 5, 6:00 PM to March 7, 6:00 PM)

Recommended repository contents:

  • README.md including:
    • Project overview and key features
    • Problem statement and how your solution addresses it
    • Tech stack
    • Setup and run instructions (step‑by‑step)
    • Team members (names and university)
  • Source code organized in folders (e.g. src/, backend/, frontend/).

How to submit (GitHub):

  1. Create a new GitHub repository for your hackathon project.
  2. Push all your project code and ensure it runs from the default branch.
  3. Write or update README.md with all required information.
  4. Copy and paste the repository URL into the submission form under “For users using GitHub”.

For users using Zipfiles

If you do not wish to use GitHub, you may submit your project as a ZIP file.

Requirements:

  • The ZIP file must contain only your team’s original work created for this hackathon.
  • Do not submit:
    • Someone else’s completed project downloaded from the internet
    • Code you do not have permission to use or redistribute
  • External libraries should be included only as dependencies (via requirements.txt, package.json, etc.), not as full copied repositories.
  • Any assets (images, sounds, datasets) must be either created by your team or properly licensed and credited.

What the ZIP must include:

  • All source code required to run your project.
  • README.md with:
    • Project description and features
    • Installation and run instructions (e.g. commands to install dependencies and start the app)
    • Tech stack
    • Any required environment variables (use placeholder values, no real secrets)
    • Team members (names and university)
  • Dependency file(s) (e.g. requirements.txt, package.json) and any configuration files needed.

How to submit (Zipfiles):

  1. Make sure your project runs correctly from your local folder.
  2. Compress the project folder into a .zip file named team-name_project-name.zip.
  3. Upload the ZIP file under “For users using Zipfiles” in the submission form before the deadline.

Judging Criteria and Winner Selection

Projects will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  • Creativity (30%)
    Originality of the idea, innovation in solving the problem, and uniqueness of the approach.
  • Design & User Experience (20%)
    Clarity and attractiveness of the interface, ease of use, and overall user journey.
  • Technical Implementation (20%)
    Quality of code, appropriate use of technology, stability, and completeness of core features.
  • Presentation + Demo (30%)
    Clarity of the pitch, ability to explain the problem and solution, and effectiveness of the live or recorded demo.
