Reed R. Madsen
Madsen, Reed R. 94 06/12/1916 10/31/2010 After 94 rich and rewarding years, Reed Robbins Madsen peacefully passed away Oct. 31, 2010, surrounded by his children. Reed was born June 12, 1916, in Rigby, Idaho, the last of 15 children born to Hans Peter and Edith Madsen. Growing up on a struggling potato farm, he learned the value of hard work and persistence. The best part of his life began when he married Margarett Parkes Sept. 29, 1937. They shared 66 wonderful years before she died in 2003. Remembering his early life, Reed always felt great compassion for those in need, as he spent his life in service to others. He loved to can fruit, even at 93 he canned 48 jars of applesauce and gave these away in large batches to his grandkids, friends, and neighbors. He was an excellent candy maker. Everyone who knew him could tell you of the large bag of delicious caramels, peanut brittle, and toffee from Reed that was the highlight of the Christmas season. Known for his beautiful roses, he had over 40 bushes that he babied and cared for. He loved to share these amazing roses with everyone. Reed spent the majority of his working career as the administrator of the Broadway Medical Clinic. He retired at 70, after 40 years. He loved his job and made friendships that continued to the end of his life. He gave generously of his time and abilities in service to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served two church missions abroad. Reed is survived by a large and loving family including his daughters, Karen Morrison (Craig), Lynne Marie Patera (Dennis), and Cynthia Richards (Art); and sons, Scott Madsen (Sharon) and Bill Schaub (Joan). He loved each of his 21 grandchildren and was amazed that his great-grandchildren totaled 35. There will be a viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, in Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary. His service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, in the Lake Oswego LDS Church on Kruse Way.
