Inspiration

The inspiration behind this app relates to our own struggles with finding restaurants that suit our needs. Part of our team is Muslim, meaning we do struggle a lot of times with finding halal food. We also have friends who are vegan, which means it’s an even bigger struggle finding places we can all go out to eat at. Additionally, since we don’t live in a big city, it can often be harder to find different cultural foods that we may see influencers or people on social media eating, and want to try out for ourselves.

What it does

The Chewd app highlights restaurants that both cater towards dietary restrictions as well as restaurants that have foods from different cultures and places around the world. It has a focus on small, local businesses rather than large corporations to help support our community. The app also provides the user easy access to the restaurants website so they can quickly see details about said restaurant.

How we built it

We built the app mainly using Thunkable. We also used both Google Firebase and Cloudinary for the signups and accounts made in our app.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into include difficulty finding restaurants that fit within the dietary restrictions because some of them were falsely listed which we found out when calling the restaurants. Another challenge we faced had to deal with a lack of time, since we all have very busy schedules with school, work, and other outside obligations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the fact that we were able to quickly figure out how to work with the coding platform since none of our team had previously coded any projects.

What we learned

We learned more about the importance of communication and planning because we all had to decide when we could work on development that would also work around our schedules. We also learned more about coding in general, and how to use a block coding platform so that in the future we could use this knowledge again.

What's next for Chewd

The future of Chewd would include a map of the restaurants with respect to the users location, restaurant recommendations based on user activity, and the addition of more restaurants over a larger range of locations.
