History of Software Design celebrates the designs and designers that shaped the most powerful medium humanity has ever built.

How did we get here? No one really knows. Even those of us working in software know very little about it. There are few books, documentaries, or interactive exhibitions. Seminal works are lost to time every year, and with them, the stories of how things came to be.

What is this? An upcoming interactive exhibit that highlights a few design moments that had an outsized impact on the world of software—from Xerox Alto Smalltalk-76 to Slide to Unlock and so much more.

Restoration

Software history is vast. We could work on this for years. Our current strategy is to "restore" some interfaces and interactions. To reduce scope, we will be opinionated and select things we’re excited to build and talk about. Diversity of moments is also important to us.

Sparse reference visuals make the restoration process an unique challenge. One must reverse engineer the detail, motion, and behavior from low quality assets. It's a lot of tracing and eyeballing to get the feel of everything dialed in.
