A Pirate's Life for Me

One whole week after Cade's pirate birthday party, I've finally had time to go through our pictures and share them! We had such fun planning and hosting the pirate party, and our home is still filled with swords, treasures, and gold coins (actually... pennies... kids left this party a little richer!) We are so thankful for all of the friends and family that came to make Cade's birthday party so special for him. Enjoy the slideshow of pictures!

Fantastic and Fearsome Four

Today Cade turned FOUR! How did all of this happen so fast?

It has been a fast and fun journey with our little four year old. The title of this post suggests Chance and my feelings/ fears about the upcoming 4th year. On one hand, Cade is getting pretty self-sufficient, and we can pretty much pick up and go without a lot of planning or packing (except for snacks). On the other hand, his little mind is always working, which makes for some pretty creative and a sometimes frustrating barganing. Last night, I asked Cade some questions about his favorite things these days so we can remember what he was like when he was four. Here are his answers (in his exact words):

Favorite things to do: Play a lot, jump a lot, and eat a lot of treats
Favorite treat: Vanilla ice cream
Favorite other foods: Quesadilla from Freebirds with Freebirds cheese and grapes
Favorite movie: Rudolph [the Red Nosed Reindeer]
Favorite show: Jake and the Neverland Pirates
Favorite song: The Jake song (see above)
Do you like school? Yes!
Favorite thing to do at school: Play on the playground
Favorite book: The Monster book (Where the Wild Things Are)

That was pretty much the end of the interview, as he answered the last few questions with things like "my nose" and "my bottom". I don't even remember what I asked him!

Some things Chance and I notice about our boy:

Most of his stories start with "When I was young"
When he gets out of bed at night or early in the morning, he says "I need to tell you one thing" and then proceeds to talk about something that we haven't discussed in a long time but obviously he has been thinking about
He is an eating machine in the car, which means we never leave the house without raisens, goldfish, fruit, and water
He STILL wakes up between 5:00 and 5:30 each morning. We STILL have not adjusted!
His favorite things to do at home are jump on the trampoline, play games, and wrestle
He tells us all the time that Jesus is alive, which is especially great in his sweet voice

Cade is a treasure! We are so thankful that God blessed us with him 4 years and 5 hours ago!

Easter Part 2

Easter Sunday was wonderful! We started the day dark and early with Cade's Easter basket at home.

Image

Once the sun came up, we had our egg hunt outside. Holly was very curious about some of the eggs!

Love this face!

Checking out the goodies inside

Image

This poor child's Easter bunny must be a teacher, because he got frog and butterfly life cycle figurines in his eggs! He seemed to like them, though :)

Image

After nap, we headed to Nana and Papa's house for an egg hunt and dinner. The kids were really happy to take a picture together before searching for eggs.

Finally! Released!

Image

Zoe is getting so big! Her eggs were hidden really high and really well.

Image

Everyone seemed very curious about what was in Cade's basket!

The Kunovich family won't be able to come to Cade's birthday party, so they brought his gift early. Here we are singing happy birthday to him for the first time!

Key to good pictures - a new airplane and a cookie made by Zoe!

Easter Part 1 - Church Celebrations

On the Saturday before Easter, our church held a community Easter celebration, complete with bounce houses, a giant slide, crafts, and of course, an egg hunt!

This was actually our 3rd attempt at this event... two years ago we went, but Cade was so overtired that the crowd overwhelmed him and we had to leave soon after arriving. (yes, the event starts at 10:00 am, but Cade has usually been awake about 5 hours by then). Then last year, the celebration was on Cade's birthday and we had every intention of going... until he got sick on his birthday and we drove past the egg hunt on the way to the doctor! So.. third time was the charm this year! It was so fun for everyone, and we were especially thankful that the Kunovich family visited from Dallas and went with us! Nana and Papa bravely kept all 3 grandkids the night before for their first sleepover, and it was a success!

First stop at the celebration - the bounce house! Cade was so happy to play with his school/church friends Davis, Carter, Jase, and Clark. There was a lot of tackling, but no tears!

Boo!

The next stop was the giant slide. I've rescued Cade from the top of many, many slides, but this one must have been magic, because he went down it a bunch of times! We were so proud of him!

Time for the egg hunt! They're off!

Fierce Xavier!

Sunday morning we went to the Easter service at our church. Here's Cade and Davis looking fancy! This was shortly before their dragon vs. dinosaur battle.

Celebrating Jesus rising!

Wesley let Cade play his guitar a little after church. He is so great with our boy!

Cade and Natalie's Easter Fun

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we had a great visit from Kelsey and Natalie a few weekends ago. Thanks to Kelsey's thoughtfulness and great photo-taking skills, we now have pictures to remember the day!

The kids started with an egg on the spoon race. I did this with one of my classes the week before, and now know that college students and 3 year olds love this activity equally!

Image

Later, we got ready to dye some eggs. We tried both natural and artificial dyes, and discovered that the natural egg dyes are an interesting science experiment, but definitely don't yield the same vibrant colors as the good ol' Paas colors.

Here we are mixing grape juice and vinegar to make purple dye. This one worked the best out of all of the natural ones.

Image

We also tried natural dyes with beets, spinach, and coffee.

Image

Thanks again, Kelsey and Natalie, for making the trip to College Station to see us! Can't wait for the kids' birthdays to see each other again.

Fun Times Together

We've been having a lot of fun lately! But before you see pictures of that, I have to make my semi-annual confession.... I bought the school picture again. How am I supposed to resist this?

Image

We used Cade's Christmas money this year to buy a new trampoline. It is HUGE! We are having so much fun with it. Chance and I are very happy to be able to jump on it with him!

Image

Last Saturday, we had a very fun visit with Kelsey and Natalie. Pictures of that to come in a later post because I was totally negligant with my camera and will have to wait on pictures from Kelsey. We had a wonderful time with our friends!
The next day, we went to a Star Wars birthday party for a girl in Cade's class at school. This was quite possibly the most well-planned birthday party I have ever attended. Everything went with the theme and the kids had SO. MUCH. FUN! Everyone got a "light-saber" and they had battles in the Bespin Bounce House. I told the party hosts that Cade woudl probably never leave - he was getting to do his two favorite things - jump and hit stuff! *Note - as a non-Star Wars fan, I did not know what many thing at the party referred to, but I'm sure it was all very important to the theme!

Image

Almost all the kids at the party - what a group!

Image

Time to re-energize. Blue icing, anyone?

Image

The party was so well-organized that there was even a picture station set up for families. Here's Team Locklear!

Cade and the sweet birthday girl!

Cade's school had an Easter egg hunt this week. Here we are outside the school with the rosebush. Every morning on the way into school, Cade likes to visit the flowers and see which ones are babies, which ones are growing, and which ones are big. This little stop every morning is a simple, sweet reminder to not be in such a hurry all the time and to enjoy the beautiful things happening all around us. I hope he always keeps his appreciation for things like this.
