God Bless Texas

If you don't like the weather, wait a minute! In the past couple of weeks, we've had sunshine, ice, wind, and everything in between!

On the MLK Day holiday, we all went up to my office so I could work out and then we explored the new outdoor boot camp/ obstacle course. I honestly don't know what all of the equipment is supposed to be used for, but my adventurous boys had some big ideas!

Four short days later, we had a delayed start to all schools because of ice on the roads! Our house had a little dusting of ice and snow and we had fun checking it out. Annie didn't really like the cold, though!

Today we had an almost 30 degree difference in temperature from morning to afternoon, and we are hoping the warmer weather sticks around for the weekend. There's more fun to be had!

Annabeth Cate - 9 Months Old

When did our little girl get so close to turning one? Cade says she is "three quarters" old now, and we say that things move so much faster with the second kid! Here's what our Annie has been doing the past month:

Eating - Annie still prefers that her food is pureed and served to her, but we are working on more finger foods. She's eaten macaroni and cheese twice and it has gone pretty well! She also likes Ritz crackers, Puffs (who doesn't?), and sometimes Cheerios. So our baby girl likes carbs. Eating cracker-type foods is easier now that she has 2 more teeth! Her two top teeth just started poking through this week. Thanks to my friend Kelsey, we figured out a way to introduce peanut butter - in applesauce! She loves it!

Image

Sleeping - Two to three night wakings still seems to be the norm. As I type this, Chance is doing his usual settling her down at 9:45. She will wake up again 45 minutes from now and I will feed her. We are going to stop being surprised by this at some point. Naps at daycare are OK, but Annie sometimes chooses not to nap on at least one day during the weekend. She is a trooper, though, and usually only fusses when I try to get her to sleep. Sometimes she is so tired that she lays down while she is playing!

Image

Enjoying - going everywhere! She is incredibly mobile, and is doing great with standing up all by herself. The dog bowls are a great source of fascination, so we had to move the pack and play into the kitchen so I can cook without getting her out of the dog bowls every few seconds. She gets all proud of herself when she stands, and gives us such a precious wrinkly-nose smile. Big brother Cade is still the highlight of her world, and she just squeals with happiness when he is around. Due to her mobility and somewhat destructive curiosity, she is banned from Cade's room, by his request. Her sad little face when he closes the door is just heart breaking, but he usually comes out to hang out with her pretty quick. She is just irresistible!

Baby girl loves the bath!

Annie also really enjoys reading, and one of her favorite books is B is for Bear, which Cade also loved at this age. It is precious to hear Cade sound out the words and read the book to her.

Growing: Right on track! At her 9 month appointment, Annie weighed 18 pounds, 12 ounces and was 27 inches long. No shots at this appointment, so it was easy for both of us. We are supposed to start introducing a sippy cup and more table food, as well as work on getting her to obey simple commands, such as giving us something when we ask for it. The fact that she is not doing this yet tells us that she either doesn't have the motor skills to release objects, or she is really stubborn. I'm afraid it is the 2nd reason! One part of her that is definitely growing is her hair... although it is getting fuzzier instead of longer! When the light catches it just right, you can see just how fuzzy it is.

We love our sweet little girl and are really enjoying this stage with her!

A Good Start to 2014

It's been back to school and work for us this week, so there isn't too much excitement to blog about. Here are some of the little things that have kept us busy so far this year!

We visited Chance in the weight room one afternoon while the exterminator came to our house. Cade impressed everyone with his box jumps, Annie crawled all over everywhere (and got filthy!) and we had fun meeting the powerlifters.

Image

Annie and I had our first girls-only road trip to Conroe to see the Johnson family at a lakehouse they were borrowing. This visit was supposed to be mainly for Cade and Natalie, but unfortunately Cade was sick. I was so proud of Annie for being very good in the car and it was great to catch up with Kelsey.

The spring semester is busy with lots of sports, and we all went to a Cougar basketball game last week. It is one of the only events where Chance is in the stands with us! Annie seriously contemplated climbing the bleachers, but (thankfully) decided not to.

Cade got a Ninja Turtles wall poster from Nana and Papa for Christmas, and he and Chance put it together this afternoon. It is pretty cool!

Tomorrow I will welcome the Aggies back to school! One week until the MLK Day holiday :)

And a Happy New Year

We concluded our Christmas celebrations on New Years Day with Christmas at Nana and Papa's in Bryan. It was great to start the new year with family! The cousins were so excited to see each other again, and we love watching them play together. Jan, Sheri, and I all kind of failed at picture taking, so we have very few. The adults were also almost all sick, so our three-day celebration was condensed down to one. Here's to happiness and health in the new year!

Merry Christmas from the Family

Do you like all of my song references in the Christmas blog post titles? I enjoy these things :) I had to use a Robert Earl Keen song for the Christmas in New Braunfels because it always feels just a little redneck-ish when we spend time in the backyard shooting BB guns, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm so glad Cade can make these memories with Chance and my dad.

Yes, I got in on the action a little this time! I need to practice.

Chris finally had some time off of work, so he and Jessi got to both join us for Christmas this year! We opened gifts at our parents' house about 25 hours after we arrived in New Braunfels. That is a lot of waiting for a 5 year old boy, and he was mostly patient about it! Opening gifts was fun, and Cade added to his Ninja Turtle collection. A great highlight was Cade introducing Aunt Jessi to the squishy goodness of Ninja Turtle ooze. It was classic! We also had our annual paper fight, which Cade called "the best part of the day"! We usually do this at my Oma's house, but unfortunately she had the flu, so we weren't able to go to her house. We really missed getting to see her!

ImageImageImageImageImage

We also went to the Guenther Christmas reunion, which is a gathering of my Opa's siblings and all of their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and now great-great grandchildren! Only three of the Guenther siblings are still with us, but the younger generations all really enjoy getting to see each other at the reunion. "Santa" stopped by the reunion this year, and Cade looks like he was taking his present and running!

This was such a fun Christmas celebration, and we are so blessed by our family.

We Had Ourselves a Merry Little Christmas

Christmas Day with 2 kids was just as we hoped it would be... precious, unhurried time with our little family of four. We are so thankful that all of our families honor our wishes to let our kids be home on Christmas Day; it is really quite peaceful and bonding for us!

Cade and Annie both slept all the way till 6:00 am (amazing!). Cade is at the perfect age where the delivery of gifts is completely magical to him, and his pure excitement was a great joy for all of us. Annie just seemed happy to be with her brother!

Image

One of Cade's gifts was too big for Santa to wrap, so he got started using it right away. Cade is ready for karate to start again!

Image

Other special deliveries from Santa were the Ninja Turtle Lair, an activity table, and sensory balls.

And then it was time for the most exciting present of the morning... Cade's very own iPhone! We kept my old phone when Chance got us new ones in November, and it now belongs to Cade, protected in a spiffy new orange case. He can't make calls or send texts (thank goodness!), but he can play his games, listen to his music, and most importantly, watch the #1 video of all time... "What Does the Fox Say"! I think he watched it at least 10 times before breakfast.

We had a great family day and really enjoyed being together. All to the tune of A-DING-A-DING-A-DING! (If you are not the parent of an elementary age child, that probable means nothing to you)
