2013 Me Losing Weight Year Review! Why I wake up early for my health!

2013 Event CollageThe peace and quiet of an early morning wake up call is something magical.  Waking up for events at 4am (or even earlier) became a normal part of life this year.  Working out with friends at the gym or riding my bike early (summer mornings)  in the perfect picture solitude is a perfect life for me.  I am fueled with passion to maintain a new lifestyle at times I have slipped and went back a step with my journey but I am human.  It is my sanctuary away from home the day is bright and brand new and nothing is in my way.  Morning time is my alone time and my me time that a mom so needs!!

In 2013 I became a member of the National Weight Loss Control Register helping with research and patterns for people who maintain weight loss. What I have learned out of all the events in 2013 my favorite are Triathlons.  Indoor Triathlons to Outdoor Triathlon yep love them.  While my least favorite thing is running my running times got faster.  What I find funny is  when I hang out with bikers they think I am a runner, when I hang out with swimmers they think I am a biker, and when I hangout with runners they think I am a swimmer/cyclist.  What I am is all 3!  People look surprised when I run with them they say wow I thought you biked or swam?  If you workout with me at the Y you may not see me run too much but my surprise is I do a second workout sometimes at the Barb City Y after work running for 20 to 30 minutes.  No one works out at the Barb city Y and I love working out their in the New Year cause I can get a machine.   What I can say events are better with friends but I have learned I can go alone too.  I learned my favorite events are the big ones with lots of people.  I love the energy a big event brings.  I learned that I place high within my age group which was shocking.  But the one thing about events I never give up.

2013 Goals Achieved

Fastest Running Mile – 9.16 seconds

Farthest Miles on my bike in one day – 103 miles

Fastest Swim – 18 laps in 10 minutes or 7 minutes for 750 meter swim

2014 Goals is to keep going for it!

I only have two because my budget is tight plus they are longer races.

Half Marathon?

103 miles done today. My app said 103.7ish lol. Did my first full Century Ride today at the Pumpkin Pie Century Ride.

P-P-Ride DoneI lived and am done with my first Century Ride.  I am never going alone again.  It was quite lonely at times.  Talked to some nice people on the way at mile 60 ish but after 75th mile or so it was me the whole way by myself.   What makes me do this?  I have no clue I love my bike it was my reward to me for all that I have accomplished.  One thing I am thankful for is Toney and Greg for joining me and going with.  They are some awesome Kish Bike and Rec Club members.  They said no problem Jackie you bike the 103 miles and we will bike 28 miles.  I think they were smart because they got to watch the Bears game!  Even though I guess I didn’t miss much the bears lost anyways.  If I told you I could of gone to Solider Field and gone to the Bears game with my family you may call me super crazy!!  Yep I have gone to a lot of bears so it is okay.

P-P-Ride 2013

How did this day start with a big breakfast!  Fuel baby Fuel all the way!  2 waffles and 2 turkey sausage breakfast sandwiches.  Yes I ate at home no fast food.  I woke up at 5am and then meet Toney and Greg at 6am.  Yep always early to events because the early bird gets the worm.  Not to mention 103 miles is going to take me all day!  🙂

The day started off really nice and not too much wind.  It was chilly but warmed up around 11am and the sun came out and loop one I was all pumped and having a good time.  Let me tell you the sun didn’t last and it got really cloudy plus the temperature took a noise dive.  Let me tell you the wind on loop 2 picked up and when the wind is whipping it stinks and makes 103 miles even harder to complete.  There were so many hills.  The hills were worse than Michigan yep there are hills in Illinois who knew because it is flat were I live.  All I could think on loop 3 is how crazy am I but this is my  goal.    Yep I couldn’t find any crazy die hard friends to do this goal with me.  As I thought to myself at least my butt doesn’t hurt and I can go to the bathroom fine the last time I visited the rest stop.  By this time I was sick of large hills but their were several more to go.  I missed talking to Laurie as I have with all the other bike rides.  Bike riding long distances should be done with a friend.  That is why I say never again.   It makes the time pass and go faster.  I was out on my bike for about seven hours and fifteen minutes.  That is a lot of time for me to think too much.  The one thing is I am proud of myself and at this point I don’t want to see another hill or ride my bike for a few days.  Then I did the bottom/bathroom test ugh the burn after 103 miles.  The one thing that hurts the most is my shoulders.   I kid you not I tried changing my clothes and I couldn’t button my jeans.  Not that they didn’t fit but my shoulder hurt so bad it wouldn’t move.  This burn though is good and not like the aches I had when I weighed 90 pounds more.  So it may take me two days to recover and that is okay with me.  Some aspirin pm for my shoulder and I am going to sleep like a baby tonight as long as my two little ones let me.

 Oh the hills!!!!!!!!!!!! Woooo
PPR15

I can’t believe how far I have come who ever thought I would go this far?  Well not me so now what is the next goal?  Rest and an off season.  My next event is easy a 5K run at my work the morning of Thanksgiving day!  If you want to go let me know and I can get you the information.  Pictures from my ride below.

ACC Bicycle Ride Review on how it went!

ACC End Finish 50

Woot 50 miles completed!  Maybe should of wore my sunglasses for the picture.  The day didn’t start of so bright but ended up to be a beautiful one and it was warmer than last year.

I have to say didn’t know if we were going to ride by the start of the morning it was wet and raining.  So glad we decided to put the bikes in the back of the van so they weren’t wet!  Last year it didn’t rain but the dew made them wet.  I wised up and the day before bought a gel seat the best $9.99 I have ever spent.  My bum didn’t hurt at all the whole 50 miles.  You may not know and warning this maybe a TMI part but my but has been so sore from riding so much starting last year long rides that it would hurt to go to the bathroom around mile 35!  Yikes yes so painful but better than being overweight so I dealt with it.  With the gel seat cover though no burn and no sore butt!!  I could of kept riding another 50 miles.  The view were great and I really like bike rides you get to enjoy the nature and earth.  I am away from the technology as I ride just enjoying the day with my partner Laurie.  Who said don’t ride with Jackie she will up her miles. I talked her into doing 50 miles with me.  She kept saying they changed the route and so finally at the end joking with her I said you no last year we did the 37 mile route and then did the 15 mile route.  So they didn’t change it :)!  The ride took us inland through rolling hills with beautiful fall leaves and then out to Lake Michigan and back inland to corn fields, pumpkin farms, and grape farms.  The scenery is awesome on the ACC also it is a well done SAG ride.  With a bike shop repair man helping fix bikes at every rest stop, you also have a wrist band with the number for SAG if you break down, well stocked with food and liquids at each rest stop, a nice breakfast in the morning, an ice cream social the night before with entertainment, and a spaghetti dinner at the end of the ride (yes I skipped this part this year and went for a glass of local Michigan wine and sausage pasta yum).  I would love to ride the 100 miles here next year because there are so many riders and the paths are well marked.  I don’t even need my map because I just follow my colored apple which are painted on the road.  If anyone is interested in going with me next year let me know.  I would love to go again.  🙂  It is better to ride with a friend.  Love Century Rides they are not a race and it is go at your own pace and enjoy the views and company by liked minded people.

The calorie burn for a 50 mile trip with awesome hills in Michigan – 4 thousand some!  Woot…

Love the ACC and Can’t wait for a girls bike ride weekend. Getting out of D Town!

Apple Cider 2012 JackieI would love to do my 100mile ride here at the Apple Cider Century it would be such a great choice, as their sag stops have a fair amount of food, and refreshments  such as water, Gatorade, and don’t forget the “apple cider”. I think the best part is that there is just so many people out riding (around 6 thousand riders) that it would keep me motivated two 100 miles.  IPlus the best thing is checking out every ones bikes and gear(not to much gear at a running event lol).  I  know my partner won’t want to go 100 miles though and I respect that.  So maybe next week at the “Pumpkin Pie Ride” in Starve Rock IL still a question if I do one more before the biking season ends.  Anyone want to go with me?  We will see time comes and checkout the weather.

I think it is one of the better organized rides in the area, and the volunteers were all fun to talk too.

I did my first ACC last year, and would say it is one of the best rides to keep confidence in going the distance, as there is always SAG wagons out patrolling to make sure everything is okay, and people with HAM radios in various spots if there is a problem. So I would say there is nothing to worry about, except ride and have fun.  Plus trying 100 miles it would be no problem someone could always take us back to the start if we couldn’t make it. At least we could try.  Okay I will do the 50 miles but am so ready this year to do 100 miles.  Yep, I have hit crazy lady workout athlete mode.  No longer the fat girl yep I am an athlete again.

The biggest tip I can give anyone doing this ride or any century ride is that you need to keep drinking fluids (you should go though at least 1 bottle between every sag stop (that is every 18 miles) plus you shouldn’t have to go to the bathroom that much if your sweating it all out, and make sure you eat plenty at every stop. The other thing with my training this year this summer I rode a couple times just go out and ride 40-60 mile rides if you can, but the major thing is to keep eating and drinking.  IF you can’t do that spin 3 times a week so your butt gets use to an uncomfortable seat.  Oh feel the burn baby.

The only thing that might be an issue is the weather, as it is later in the year. It could be cold and raining, or nice and warm. Last year it started out at about 40F but was around the mid 60’sF later in the day. So just be ready for a variety of temps.  I was freezing and bundle.  That reminds me my long coat it is water proof.  Maybe some water proof long pants?? Should I spend the money it is suppose to rain.  Long fingered gloves. Bringing my positive attitude it is going to be 66 degree high and possible rain.

Triathlon # 2 done and finished for the record books.

Sprint Triathlon 2!A smaller sprint triathlon today in Oregon Illinois.  I think I had more adrenaline with 2,100 people from my first triathlon because my times were slower but the course was different too.  The distance at Oregon Park District Sprint Triathlon was 300 meter swim, 10 mile bike, 5K run.  The swim was in the pool this time.  I didn’t swim as fast I could I think I am ADHD and looking at all the other swimmers lol.  I swear I swim much faster at master swim class workouts maybe because I am super nervous or start out too fast.  The park district has a new pool this year and it is very nice. Let me tell you Oregon Illinois has hills unlike Naperville and traffic was open during the bike plus tiny turns on the bike path portion.  My bike speed majorly dropped with sharp turns and tons of hills.  With my bike I have to clip in my shoes to the pedals so I am nervous with narrow turns.  My run was a bit slower too not sure why or could it be that I have been fighting an ear infection, head cold all week, and had IT band problems this summer. Hey but I went to the triathlon not sure I would know anyone.  I am on some medication for my ears they are acting up with swimming a lot this year.  Overall time  at this sprint triathlon was around 1 hour 20 minutes.  I had fun.  So excited to see Dawn there from my gym.  We finished close in-time.  Came in 6 out of my age group not sure how many were in my age group.  Everyone was nice and encouraging.  This is my last sprint triathlon there are not any left in the area for the rest of the summer.  I have a couple bike events left but they are not races just a lot of biking miles.  I love hanging out with my friends and exercising.  Not sure I could run and hang out why because it is boring to me and I see less miles and why did I do triathlons?  I think 5K races are too short but seriously I don’t want to run more than a 5K or 8K or maybe 10K at max.  So a sprint triathlon adds my bike my favorite so it is longer.  I like swimming too so as long as it is not extra running or a marathon I am all good.

One tip always set your workout goals higher than the next and try it!  If I have an event I know I have to train.  Next thing to train for maybe 80 miles on my bike not sure with work here though.  But I know 70 miles on my bike is certainly in my future!

Sprint Triathlon with Dawn!

Just Signed up for my Second Sprint Triathlon this weekend! Looking at the past and my plan of action that got me to be doing triathlons!

Zoot Shoes

One more Sprint Triathlon before I head back to teaching this Monday.  I will be going to the Oregon Park District Sprint Triathlon.  Anyone want to join me? 🙂  It is 300 meters, 10 mile bike ride, and a 5K at the end.  Not too hard.  Okay so if I looked at this 2 years ago I would of said I can’t even run.  Bike no way or swim I am to big for my suit!   This is a really small Sprint Triathlon compared to the one I just did so finding my bike shouldn’t be a problem :).  My ears hurt and I have a head cold but if I look at were I have come from the pain is minimal and will pass.  Not like the pain I lived with when I was heavy.

Me in 2011 after giving birth to my son

  • ugh gained 90 pounds again
  • It hurt to even walk to my classrooms (upstairs was a big pain)
  • Afraid to swim (the looks I would get in my suit but I did take my daughter to parent/child swim)
  • Feet pain
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Hated being seen in public
  • Joint Pain
  • After work it hurt to get out of my car after my half hour commute
  • Moving my body just hurt

My Plan of Action

  • start to go to the YMCA by the time my son was 6 weeks and master exercising 40 minutes a day
  • start with a class that I can do no matter what size “Circuit Training” in the evening
  • lose 40 pounds so I won’t hurt to go to my favorite exercise class SPIN!
  • start working on my healthy diet plan of action when my son slept more than 5 hours
  • start waking up for 5 am workouts when my son slept 6 or more hours.  So I get working out part done first thing no excuse.
  • doctors suggestion didn’t you win that Healthy Life Style Challenge after your daughter was born.  You like competition sign up!
  • workout and eat right to win the competition ugh lost 13 percent body fat did not win.  Determined to win the following year no 2nd place for me!
  • started attending all the YMCA classes meeting people and getting out with friends on my bike.  To ride 24 miles by summer and we did a little more 30 something.  We end up doing 52 by the end of September in hilly Michigan.  Biking and Spin class my favorite activity!
  • sign up for work challenge didn’t win first time but kept me on track from not gaining and 2nd place at Christmas break.
  • train for my first 5K on Thanksgiving day in the town that I teach in planned by our gym teacher. (totally trained wrong lol oh well)
  • February the YMCA is having an indoor triathlon okay!  Train January.  I hate to run okay but it is only 15 minutes on a treadmill.  I actually then started to like running! What a nut! I was lighter and it was easier.  I started at 5 mins and increased my run every other day by a minute.  Slow and steady wins the race.  OMG I just wanted to finish but I placed at the top half.
  • February Healthy Living Group Challenge 2013..  Work real hard to win..  Working out 2 to 3 hours a day.  I am crazy yes and I do have a full time job and kids.  I won though
  • March – Lets try another indoor Tri!  A little longer time on running and biking.  Placed 8th for the women!  I am not bad at this triathlon thing I said.  My Swim times and spin times put me ahead! I went alone to this one crazy I know no friends oh well.  I still mad friends and had a blast!
  • April, Well hooked up with a friend to do the Shamrock Shuffle 8K to start the running season in Chicago.  OMG I need to run 5 miles.  Yikes trained every other day.  Did the 5 miles all together a few times.  Had fun with 40 thousand other runners.  It was a blast!  Did I say I hate to run 🙂
  • April another townie 5K placing 10th in my age group.  Not bad again.
  • April join the Kish Bike and Rec Club in “town.  Riding my bike all spring, summer and fall!
  • April bought my first road bike – woot now I have 2 bikes! AWESOME
  • April Healthy Living Challenge Indvidual at the Y.  Try to win twice I like to compete! I won in May!
  • May I also won part two of the work challenge this time.
  • May – my legs are hurting ITBAND problems take the month off
  • June – Biggest Loser 5K with Pat!  Time wasn’t as good my ITBAND hurt.  Placed high again awesome in my age group!
  • July – take two more weeks off from running my leg hurt really bad after the last 5K! Biking for Beanzie 65 miles woot!
  • August – first outdoor triathlon.  Why I like triathlons the biggest portion is the biking.  Someone said isn’t biking over 18 miles dangerous lol yes but I love it!  I love swimming too.  Not scared to swim and always wanted to race swimming when I was little just grew up in a small town and when I moved to a big town I was on too many sport teams.
  • August – first indoor triathlon loved it so why not do another one.  Goal next year Olympic triathlon distance and maybe the HyVee Triathlon in IA which is 1.5 mile swim, 25 mile bike, and a 10K.  I need a partner anyone interested?
  • September this year I go back to bike riding events and maybe do one in October.  Then I think it is an off season for me and enjoy the Y classes!!
  • October maybe one more bike ride enjoy life with the family and rest and get ready for winter programs at work this year.

Goals for next year – Do a Olympic Triathlon, Hyvee Triathlon in September, Bike a 100 miles in one day, do the event ride across Iowa for a week!  Improve time on my sprint triathlons, and get my kids into this lifestyle!

A great swimming tip article to remember for my next Triathlon!

Swim googles Ready

If your looking to do a triathlon trust me I can swim but it is very different.  I plan to do a longer race next year.  Here is a great article from active.com go here a must read if your thinking about diving into the sport!    Let me say I wish I would of read this article earlier because it was the first time athletes were aloud to wear wet suits at the Naperville Sprint Tri and I was curious why they did.  The water was only one degree shy of not being wet suit legally.  Now I know why they wore their wet suits.   Another thing if you can swim 400 meters like myself and I timed myself before the race at 6 minutes and 57 seconds don’t put yourself in the 8-10 minute line because in this wave many people were not great swimmers.  Go up front further to the 4-6 minute line.  Must people are afraid of the swim and trust me it is a lot different than the pool!  Find open water if your lucky enough and train a couple times there.

My First Sprint Triathlon on Sunday August 4th, 2013 Recap Time 1hour 28minutes 31seconds

Good morning it is 435am and ready for my first triathlon

I am up early again it is 4:40am and it is time to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  Was planning to eat a big breakfast but I slept through my alarm and woke up at 4:35am.  Yep that is me usually never on time but I planned to be on time this day.  Vicky was picking me up at 4:45am and we were heading our way to the Naperville Sprint Triathlon.  We had already gone on Friday to pick up our packets and listen to the triathlon training tips.  I am ready and set to go!  Over 2,100 athletes registered for the 2013 event, making it one of the largest sprint triathlons in the country. Centennial Beach Park and the city of Naperville played the perfect host for a wonderful event on a great weekend full of fitness and fun.  We had a great time and with 2,100 athletes it was easy to run at the end without my music.  The running without music part in a triathlon had to be the hardest thing for me because I am a music teacher.  Thank you to the guys blaring their car radio on the run.  I kept the one tune in my head and kept singing over and over in my mind to keep going to end.  Note to self one peanut butter jelly sandwich and one goo packet are not enough to do a sprint triathlon.

Step one find check in  and your number will be marked on your arm and your age on your leg calf.  Step two show your wrist band number to be let in the transition area to setup your bike.

Bike Rack

My bike is set up!  When you go to a triathlon you will need to find your number on the racks and the side that your number is on you will need to back your bike in and hang the seat on top.  Then set your transition mat/towel and gear under your rear tire.

Transition Mat

Transition mat is set up and I have my helmet, cycling shoes, and shades set out for the first transition.  Then my running shoes, my bib number on my strap, and visor our setup for transition 2.  My  number/belt are under my running shoes so it does not fly away.

My first Sprint Tri

I am set up and ready for my first sprint triathlon!  Yes and I picked the largest one to go to so I made sure to take not were my bike was.  I walked from transition one and it was easy I counted 2 grass patches back and the trees.  I also tied a green shoelace on the back of my bike.   Then I checked out from transition two and it was how many rows back down and by the first grass patch.  Found my bike each transition.  The transition area closes to all athletes at 6.45am meet at the beach for race announcements, the USA  national anthem is sung and race time is on at 7am.  I waited on the beach for a little over a half hour talking to people about there favorite triathlons.  One women was going to do a Iron Man in Arizona wow.  Don’t think that will ever be me.

Swim

Oh the swim the not so pretty part of triathlon clothes.  Ahhh don’t look to hard yikes!  For some reason I put myself back farther in the swim and I shouldn’t of gone at my time.  It is a lot different than swimming in a pool because there is nothing to hang on to because it is open water.  You can do what a lot of people did pull themselves on the buoys and swimming lane markers.  They let a group of three people off every few seconds.  I was running into people because I can’t see in the water.  Then coming up on a buoy a person is being pulled out of the water so I had to tread water for like a minute or two.  I heard Vicky say something to the guy.  He was right at the turn point were they where rescuing him with the boat.  So pushing him out of the way we head on our way.  I knew Vicky was very close in time with me.

Bike transitionTransitioning to my bike.  I run out of the water head to my bike.  First thing on sunglasses then my helmet and my sock plus bike shoes.  Then running out of transition to get on the bike you have to run past the mats and then mount.  Then were off.

Bike SPTRI1

Thanks to the guy telling me that I was working too hard and said gear up.  I  geared up 5 times oh boy and was that 100 times better because I wasn’t working too hard.  I was too into my first sprint triathlon to even think about the gears lol.   Then dismount before mats and run the bike back for transition two. I put my running shoes on and my running belt/number.  I run through the park get some water and then I see a big hill.  Yep I ran half way up then walked plus ate my goo packet.  Should of done that on the bike but oh well.  My side start to cramp halfway through the run that is why I knew ugh I should of eaten more.  But I made it through.

Finishing STri1

I finished my first Sprint triathlon!  Ya……. my time was 1 hour 28 minutes and 38 seconds.   Next sprint triathlon I want to try to beat my times.

Finishing medal st1I am happy to be done with my first sprint triathlon and below are my results.  Yes I grabbed some water and some food on the way out.  Nothing like a couple bottles of water and some refreshing fruit to make you smile.

My Results on my first Sprint Triathlon

933 out of 2,100 athletes not bad.  49th in my division not bad in the top half for both. 🙂

Vickey and I at the Naperville Sprint Triathlon 2013

Make sure you leave your bracelet on so they can check your number and your bike number before you leave transition.  No upgrades on bikes lol.  Vicky and I to show proof we were there and went together.

My first outdoor sprint triathlon.  Loved it and will be back to do another one or maybe an Olympic one.  I would love to do the HyVee triathlon next year in Iowa.   I could do it this year it is on September first but I need to save some money to do that one.  Many triathlons are not cheap.  Some sprint triathlons I saw were cheap if they used an inside swimming pool.  I think I rather save my money for a triathlon then fork out money for a 5K ever again.  Bike events and Triathlons I am in they are way more fun at least to me.

Special note:  Thank you to my family for their support on my training.  My parents for babysitting and hubby watching the kids also why I train or go to bike club/Master Swim training.  Much love to you all.  I wish you could all come route me on but I know it is hard right now with my 2 year old and 5 year old.

Naperville Sprint Triathlon 2013 – A couple days before preparing for the race.

Naper. STri. Coaching Instr. 2

Vicky and I went Friday to Race Clinic Training Sessions by Experience Triathlon – Coach Joe.  I think it is great that Naperville had many coaching sessions to prepare new triathlon athletes.   The session lasted ninety minutes.  Thank you Coach Joe for the helpful information.

Naperville STri number

My number and timing chip.

Me In My Tri Suit 2

My Racing suit.  My Triathlon top and shorts.  Wow these clothes are tight.

NTS 2013

OMG it is four days before my 35th birthday and they put me in the 35 year old age group this time :).  Not sure if that is a good thing or bad thing.  What are you doing for your 35th birthday just a little Sprint Triathlon.  Then the week after I am going to train for a half Iron Man in WI crazy lol.  I am not doing all of the run.  I can do the swim and bike no problem.  Most people doing a triathlon tell me the swim is there worst part.
Transition items ready to be packed

Laying out all my gear on my transition mat.  Did I miss anything? Then going to pack my bag.

Sprint Triathlon GearLaying out all my gear two nights before.  Wow it takes more gear than running or biking eve.  I have to say going on a running event is the easiest race.

Naperville STShirt Goodbag items NSTriThe good bag items.

My goal to finish.  What scares me the most transitions.  I never practiced them.  Hmmm what am I eating for breakfast in the morning well if I get off this computer and go to bed now.  I will have toast and an egg.  If I don’t wake up in time a Luna bar :(.  I am off to bed I have a 4am wake up call and I am out of my house by the crack of dawn again for a crazy race.

PS: From the last post I think my leg is better from the kitty attack.  Now my husband and the kids want a new cat sigh as long as the cat is old and slow I am in lol.  I have trained for this race but with running injuries, ear infections, and a kitty attack I had to take sometime off.  My leg finally feels okay to run on, my ear infection is gone as of a week ago.  My leg is bruised but I am still moving because with all these injures are nothing compared to being morbidly obese because the weight hurt me physically and mentally.  All right super excited and why am I still up.
