Critical minerals have moved from the margins of industrial policy to the centre of global economic strategy. As AI infrastructure expands, electrification accelerates, and defence supply chains are reassessed, mining and metals are no longer peripheral industries but key assets in a rapidly shifting geopolitical order.

Governments are deploying subsidies, tariffs and state-backed finance to secure supply, while companies are seizing the commercial opportunity through consolidation, technological innovation and renewed capital investment. Processing capacity, trade alignment and regulatory strategy are becoming as consequential as ore grades and production costs. As a result, the mining industry is entering a more assertive phase - shaped not simply by commodity cycles, but by ambition, national rivalry and the need for economic security.

To identify the opportunities in all of this, the 7th edition of the FT Metals & Mining Summit will bring together ministers, chief executives, investors and policymakers ahead of LME Week. Together, they will discuss how geopolitics, capital and technology are redefining the future of resources — and whether the industry can deliver the scale and resilience now expected of it.
