Monthly Archives: April 2022

That was … April 2022

So we have reached the end of April am quite a lot this month as things get busier again.

We started the month with Anne and I taking part in Made in Dagenham musical with Swanage Musical Theatre. I managed to get through the performances despite a cough that was increasingly chesty. The stage performances were enjoyable and I will be back for new production rehearsals from September.

The chest infection dominated the next week and a half with me ending up back on antibiotics. The shop had a very quiet start to the month and now shut for over a week.

Coming out the other side we were into the mix of dates for water holidays between holidaymaker and local school breaks. In 10 days we just beat 70 art for fun participants and some encouraging sales recovery. The weather has generally been good enough to sit outside most days.

The sailing season also started and so far I have done two safety duties on training evenings and one evening sailing where I tried the new Fusion dinghy – it doesn’t sink with someone my weight and it is easy to recover from a capsize – I practise this 3 times in one evening to prove my point and I now know I can remember some of the practical aspects of sailing.

Kayaking sessions have been started for club members and I have been to the first two as back up safety support with tow rope yet to be needed.it has been good to be out on the water with a group and share some of the things I have learnt previously.

The shop is now getting prepped for PAW 22. So as usual a busy month even with time lost to illness. Anne and I are getting days out whichI love to do.

May’s main focus will be developing more art ahead of PAW which starts on the 27th with the private view and then open from Saturday 28th to June 12th. Also sailing and kayaking including some time out in the double kayak hopefully for Anne and I.

Trip out to Lulworth

Busier Monday but still relaxed

So, wake early,go back to sleep – gone are the days of pre7 am wake ups. Today we went out by car to deliver PAW brochures to the caravan site at Durdle Door (above it). we took a country route but due to the ranges being shut for firing out to sea we took a circuitous but beautiful route that made the most of the Purbeck Spring countryside.

Brochures left, it was onto Lulworth Cove, coffee at The boatyard cafe and a sketch of the cove. Then a stroll up to look over Stair Hole which had come up in conversation at the shop last Friday. Another sketch including one of the range boats.

A reversal of our previous route led to East Creech tea rooms and my first visit – a lovely and generous ploughman’s, a sketch, but of course, and a wander around the ponds and animals area.

Then back via Church Knowle, C Castle,Kingston where the old parish church is up for sale, through Langton M, along the seafront. Tea looking over the bay at home. Camera photos uploaded. This evening TV of Grace – ITV crime show then The Split on BBC live rather than recorded.

Quite a lot done but also relaxed pace too and enjoying both the coast and countryside of our lovely area.

Sunday saunter

A slow get up and breakfast by the sea plan, so we walked down to Down the Beach. Usual sausage and bacon baguette sharing and a mug of tea. We watched some of the club racing – I am not up to this yet this season and conditions today tbh were too windy for me and a club boat.

Then we walked back into town and onto the Victoria Avenue beach car park and the Classic Car show with apparently 124 showed up – more than allocated space. I took photos on camera so not uploaded yet. It was great to see some 2CVs, loved the Morris Minors esp the Travellers and wood trim, a beautiful 1964 Volvo and many others.

Into town and on to the pier, coffee and a piece of cake then a wander down the pier as far as the restoration work.

Then home, watching the view from Upper Obs. A nap and some legal dram tv this evening.

Restarting exercise catches up

Anne and I kayaked on Monday, a short paddle for me but great to be out on the water together again. Tuesday I sailed for the first time this year and I was very nervous about whether I would remember what to do, also taking out a new boat from the club. In the end I rattled around in my usual clumsy style and I had three capsizes but I did remember lots and never needed rescuing but did get monitored. On Wednesday I acted as an assistant on the water with kayak session again that was easily within my ability on a beautifully calm bay.

Thoughts that I potentially could train on a Tuesday, kayak with a group once a week, race on Thursday and Sunday plus any other solo or kayaking with Anne plus walking assumes a certain level of fitness. My body started to remind me on Wednesday morning and the two days since that I haven’t exerted myself this much since September last year. I have a way to go to regain fitness to be on the water more than twice a week, I shall work at this and also leave time for Anne and I to have time together.

Yellow and black drysuited figure is me

I am reminded at the sailing club how much taller and larger I am than many of the other participants but it will be interesting to see what level of fitness I can develop between now and October.

Oh yes and I am now 58 and my body seems to take longer to recover and I am far less active than even 10 years ago.

Wake to sunrise

I am waking earlier these sunny mornings having slept well after yesterdays exertions. Today included a walk along to Down the Beach for a coffee pre work.

A busy day of Art for Fun and then shut early, home to collect boating gear. Then sailing training which while keeping an eye on two peers who had got into difficulties I managed to lose focus and capsize myself. I was in a new boat which I generally liked, but three capsizes are now catching up with me as energy dips. Total steps for the day just under 15k.

So a good day and more exercise again. Tomorrow evening I am assisting with kayaking session and there will be some resting on Thursday I predict.

Bank holiday like a holiday

We live at the seaside, we see the sea everyday yet a day together without work can feel just like a holiday.

So a lie in after a poor night’s sleep. Then our first idea, if enough energy, a kayak. The bay was so calm with a gentle westerly leaving much of the bay calm – until we got on it lol.

We paddled in our Scooter Gemini double SOT from the sailing club, under the pier, across to meet Mike and Hazel from the club who were out checking the club buoys and moorings. The breeze was increasing and blowing us offshore. We continued to paddle parallel to the shore but a little way off to avoid where the waves were gathering. Past the banjo pier and onto Ocean Bay and to ‘Down the beach’ cafe where we had walked to yesterday. We had a coffee and a scone for me. The last wave as we landed allowed us to surf in.

A selfie and then back onto the bay and back parallel to Shore Road. On return we went around the pier and watched a cormorant perched on one of the uprights of the old pier. Landed and racked, then I had to move one of my other kayaks due to some rack confusion.

Home for a late light lunch. To avoid having a nap we went for an amble / walk – out to Peveril Point, then returned along the under shore path. Then along the seafront and onto the beach by The Mowlem. An ebbing tide me at we then walked from the banjo pier to Down the beach again but this time paddling our feet in the water – very cold to begin with but our feet grew used to it. Then a walk back along the path.

Home, a cuppa, a read and later dinner and some catch up tv.

12k steps and a kayak – a good day.

Blog hiatus / break over

A week of not blogging because I was getting healthier and then also just getting on with things.

My chest infection has gone, I have reopened the shop, I have done a safety duty at he sailing club including one capsized sailer recovery, I have bent o a meeting about kayaking, helped run the bar duty, been out for lunch with my mother in law, collected our younger son from a hospital visit by ambulance – he seems ok., eaten a chococo dinosaur Easter egg (smaller version), I have walked on the seafront before work twice, walked on the beach…

Yes a week with much to recommend it. Easter Monday, another us day rather than shop day then four days with local schools still on Easter break and I hope more Art for fun participants.

Meanwhile Ukraine situation continues, our government continue to show themselves up through personal actions over tax that suit themselves or decide to allow one lot of refugees in but will fly others to Rwanda in Central Africa in stead of showing fellow humans respect.

Easter Sunday lunch at the beach

58 today

Yep, birthday, boot something I usually make a lot of fuss about but have had a disproportionate amount of nice places compared to rest of the family as often during an Easter holiday away.

Today a quiet morning sat watching the bay which included – local gig rowing club out practicing for the World Championships next month in the Scillies. Groups of sea kayakers, twinge of envy there. Barge putting out the 5 knot marker buoys in the bay so from now on I can watch if craft drop their speed once passed. Solent Scene on Swanage To Poole ferry run. Sunshine – bonus in itself to be honest and less coughing.

Birthday presents included a first for me – a gourmet chocolate pizza

Yes, pretty sweet and had the centrepiece and three slices so far.

Then lunch was a pastie sat on the seawall with a Town crier competition going on behind us. Then a steady walk on the front plus ice cream and coffee. Home via the shop to,pick up my Posca markers and some items to possibly draw on in the next couple of days.

Then a quiet afternoon starting a new book if I can maintain concentration. Second half of Hidden series 3 this evening with a steak dinner.

A lovely birthday lots of online greetings from near and far and some great time with Anne and also saw younger son too.

Cough is getting less sever, I have coughed a lot less today.

More a day for sleep

Today I have had two extra sleeps during the day, not left home and been quieter for quite a lot of the day but this evening more coughing again. I find it frustrating but at the same time know that I just have to go at the pace my body needs.

So, shop to remain closed u til I am better rather than trying to guess which day that is. A little bit of shading art today in fineliner but lost focus pretty quickly.

This evening we caught up the first three episodes of Hidden, Welsh crime drama from BBC 4 in its final series. Helps make the brain work trying to work out who did what and why.

Tomorrow we will get out for some time and just take it gently and I will morph from 57 into 58.

Chest infection rattles on

So more sleep achieved in chunks last night. Lots of coughing today, some loosening up. Decision made that I will not be ready to reopen the shop tomorrow so posted online and changed in shop notice to hopefully reopen Saturday.

Managed to walk in town, lunch outside cafe and I stayed out of all buildings. We walked 6000 steps which I am pleased with, stopped several times to chat with social distancing – takes me back to early lockdowns out and about on the seafront.

Back home again and trying not to fall asleep before supermarket delivery.

Also realised today how not being well and not a lot of customers interactions at shop recently means I have started to be more of the shy introspective me, the real one, that people are fooled about when I am being extrovert as the art for fun artist etc. it is something I need to keep an eye on as shy can lead to dips in mood too.
