Charity in our community

On Saturday evening I attended a charity variety show organised by Emily Gadd. She was raising money for CanCare, a Purbeck based volunteer team supporting cancer sufferers and their families plus two of our local Explorer scouts group who will be attending the next World Jamboree in South Korea.

Anne was one of the people taking part and many of the cast were from Swanage Drama Company with whom we have performed in the annual pantomime in Swanage,

Pulled together quickly as a show there was a range of singing, dancing, comic turns and some very personal recollections of Covid from NHS workers of whom the cast had a number. Also Can Care and the scouts shared what their cause was. Emily also shared a sketch based around her own cancer story.

It was a shame that even more people couldn’t have been there. Over £400 was raised to be split between the two causes. I am glad I went even if it was in the last school that I worked in and that was quite hard.

Swanage as a community has many groups and meetings etc organised by volunteers in the town. For a town of 10,000 an incredible amount of things happen in the support of others. We are lucky to live here.

Heading into Purbeck Art Weeks 2022, my 6th

So my first art event was Purbeck Art Weeks (PAW) 2017 and I have taken part every year since. 2020 was an online auction event. 2021 moved to September to allow more things to settle and hopefully Open Studios to feel safer to open up.

Saying that it is the sixth time I have participated is great and just shows how far I have come with my art in that time.

Today at the shop I put up bunting from Hayley Happy Hay emporium – something a little different from the red white and blue that is everywhere. My signs with added PAW signage was put up, I hung my Open Studio banner below my shop sign.

Today it came up in conversation with visitors, most of whom were on a day trip or already had a brochure. I worked on drawing frames on to what will be the next collaboration boiler suit with drawings by years 3 and 4 at Swanage Primary as we also did with the 2019/20 cohort. Later I added colour to a fishing boat A6 piece I had drawn previously. I also posted on social media.

This afternoon Art for fun at AndyKnillArt Studio exceeded 400 participants and the recipient chose an A6 art pad to go with some ProMarkers that she also bought. Fizz the dog card and Sailing card designs were both popular today.

Tomorrow the art weeks kick in and apart from two Mondays with duties at Rollington Barn I will be in the shop from 10 to 5 each day until Sunday June 12. I am looking forward to what PAW brings this year.

So, more chats

Yesterday evening I had several chats with friends and our youngest on messenger. Catching up, checking in, sending on an apology linked to weekend faux pas.

The person who needed my attention most was our youngest, later I offered a dad hug and it was taken up. Anne returned from rehearsals to find us chatting. Unusually I had apparently not wound the situation up and had made my points from a perspective which was taken as balanced by youngest.

The hug was good to share, it was good to talk face to face, I am not sharing what we talked about as that is my son’s business and not to share. It is a situation as parents we have done for both our sons on many occasions. Sometimes the outcome was successful and at other times we try and end in some sort of truce with difference of opinion on how to proceed.

This helping others is something we sometimes over offer to people we meet, friends or just situations we find ourselves in and then sometimes we have to then extricate ourselves as we don’t have the ongoing emotional resilience / capacity to be supportive for an extended period. One of our social workers many years ago said to Anne and I that we need to ‘just be’. It’s a failing we both have at times to keep busier than we need to be.

Readers – are you supportive to others? Do you over extend yourselves? Any advice on how not to get in that situation in the first place?

The thread that is blogging

I have lost this thread recently and just been getting on with life. Recent adventures include trips out with the mother in law aged 100 and getting out with us a bit more regularly. Preparations for local art weeks. Visit to Essex to see our eldest son. Working with local primary school and going back into a classroom as a local artist which is not the same as teaching. Walks by the sea…

My blog as I have said before acts as a diary of sorts that I can return to and see things that I got up to previously. It is nice getting feedback from others from time to time and I find it quite surprising when told more people have followed my musings – so to any readers out there – thank you.

Mental health has picked up recently and mainly been ok to good. This weekend in making a comment linked to concern meant I let out of the bag some information shared with me in confidencel The corresponding message from the person who had shared the information was not pleased. I sent apologies and I have also sent apologies indirectly to the person I spoke to and may have upset by two routes. This impacts on me quickly and yesterday after readings aid message I was very low and hid by sleeping. This morning I was still very low and also linked to me reaching out to offer support to a local person in need but also in danger of over committing myself to support that I don’t have the capacity to offer consistently. A very nervy Andy went off to deliver some art sessions at the primary school – two hours of art delivery with years 3 and 4 brought confidence back out and good time was had. By the time I reached home though emotional fatigue meant I slept most of the afternoon.

This post is going a bit all over the place…if you can follow it good, if you can’t sorry it’s the way my brain is jumping about at the moment.

Art weeks start at the end of the week and life will be very busy, let’s hope so because that will settle the thought processes racing through my head.

Mental health the gift that keeps on…

Over the weekend we had an event on the seafront in town that put a lot of traders backs up. I had no potential customer visits so that after 5hours I shall t shop and went home. I was annoyed, disappointed and unable to concentrate on any task for more than a few minutes, so reading, doing a puzzle, drawing – none were possible consistently and my mood started to slide.

I know that this an happen and I will act to distract myself and find something to distract me, I didn’t act quick enough and my mood dipped very quickly, in fact when I went home at 3pm I slept for 3 hours – one mode of hiding from the world.

Sunday we got out and did things, the same on Monday but still my mood need some coercing to lift. Tuesday and today no shop customers buying but I knew my priority was preparing for Purbeck Art Weeks and I was able to be creative. This morning two of my regulars for Art for Fun visited.

I blog about this as although generally these days my mental health is in the best state that it has been for years I can still suffer a sudden dip. I am able to tell myself that I will come out of it, the frightening aspect is how self destructive thoughts can surface so quickly.

I feel that I am back again in the balanced world and I have things to be getting on with but for those that don’t suffer anxiety / depression in their lives, think before you jolt that friend who seems a little lost / distracted / down they may be suffering much more inside than you can see.

Admin, cooling temperatures and meal out with friends

I realise I am writing more of a daily diary at times in the manner of blog I didn’t want to do once upon a time. Anyway…

This morning was driving into town to drop off art print order and brochures for art weeks at the shop, drive home and then walk back for a coffee before work.

A warm sunny start and some early customers for cards. my day had lots of admin checking in printed order and storing items away. Also some studio tidying of desk area later. My only drawing was adding some sky background on new pith helmet. The temperature cooled this afternoon as the breeze increased and sun went in.

Home, change and out for dinner with friends at The Pink Goat and a lot of catch up conversation which was lovely.

Day to the Wey

Today we left Swanage and headed to Upwey and Weymouth – both named after the river Wey – a bit of a tenuous geographical connection linked to my former career.

So collecting a large print order of reprints of cards and prints, some new pieces and also placing another order for my latest piece of work. Then into Weymouth.

On the way we passed one of the new Commercial versions of the Landrover Defender 90 new version – it looked very smart.

So in Weymouth, coffee and a sketch and cakes / pastries avoided and a visit to my favourite workwear shop – Acutts who have supplied the boilersuits and most of the bib and braces I have drawn on to date.

Then a walk along the north side of the river / harbour. The row ferry wasn’t working today as he has had a poor week for customers. So return to the opening green bridge.

Lunch and my second sketch at The Stone Pier Cafe below the Nothe Fort. We discovered this a few years ago and come here often on Weymouth visits post printer visits. We also saw the motor yacht that had been moored in Swanage overnight was now in Weymouth Bay

After lunch a visit to The Cove Gallery and back along by the river to the car park. Home via Osmington past a much clearer horse on the hill. Through the back lanes from Wool enjoying the Dorset countryside.

A good day out to another part of Dorset.

Beach cafe am, kayak pm

A day influenced by the sea. We woke in time to Ali along the seafront and have breakfast at Down the Beach this morning – against the forecast we sat in brilliant sunshine and still air.

A day of mixed cloud and sunny breaks outside the shop.

This evening while Anne was at a rehearsal I went for a paddle for 49 minutes.

I do love living here.

A more lively Tuesday than usual

So up earlyish and a walk along the seafront before work. Today at the shop, no customer sales, some visitors and one adult art for fun.

I did my May to do list and got on with it straight away even adding things I had forgotten to note down. Then I drew three items today.

First we were attending the 3rd birthday celebrations of The Pink ago at in Corfe Castle this evening so a card as needed, it had to be an original.

Hope Ben and Pav love it

Then back to work on my new pith helmet with the addition of a sunflower on each side.

Then I drew a surfing A6 piece from a photo taken last year.

Into the surf

This evening at the Goat was fabulous and we met several people we knew from the goat, but also, art community, rowing club, sailing club, dramatics…

A busy day and evening

We need to exercise more…oh and eat less

So today, having kayaked yesterday we planned to go for a walk.

We walked out to the southern point of Swanage Bay at Peveril Point then walked up onto the Downs. Getting away from the other walkers we headed down onto the stretch of coast path above the zigzag. Into the country park along Isle of Wight road and up to the castle. We took the woodland route out to the nautical mile markers and then returned along the Clifftop path. The guillemots were noticeably not out on the water as we had seen on our most recent visit.

Back to the castle and the new art exhibition visited. The cafe had a very long queue so drink idea shelved. Same return route except the road from the end of the park rather than the zigzag stretch and back down to Peveril Point.

A slice of cake each and tea from NCI coast watch and then a walk home. Lunch and an afternoon rest was needed even though a flat calm bay beckoned.

Afternoon and evening bay

This evening after eating we went for an amble along the seafront to the end of the path and back, total walking for today ended at just under 20k steps which for some people would not constitute a long walk but is a new beat for us for 2022.
