Ryan Gosling teams up with a cute alien to save Earth. It’s great fun
If a new science fiction film strongly reminds you of a handful of others, how much of a problem is it when those others are among the best things the genre’s done in 25 years? When it comes to the zippy yet nourishing Project Hail Mary, in which Ryan Gosling teams up with a cute, affable alien to save their respective home planets from an impending ice age, I’m tempted to say it’s no problem at all.

Movie Review: Gosling, Lord and Miller make science fun in ‘Project Hail Mary’
It’s been a minute since we’ve had a big screen space epic that’s as fun as it is awe inspiring. The last memorable one might have been “The Martian, ” so perhaps it shouldn’t be all that surprising that the drought is ending with another Andy Weir story adapted by Drew Goddard. “Project Hail Mary,” directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, is the kind of spectacular cinematic adventure that we’ve been missing: A clever, sincere, most-ages crowd-pleaser that’s full of life, energy and a love of science, quirky T-shirts and “Interstellar.” It’s the kind of movie Disney really should be making, but, in this case, we have Amazon MGM to thank.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Review: Ryan Gosling in a Lavish but Derivative Outer-Space Adventure
The film feels padded, whether it’s stopping in its tracks for Eva to do a full-blown karaoke version of Harry Styles’ "Sign of the Times" or spilling over into a finale that doesn’t know where to end. The sentimental dilemma of whether Ryan, at one point, is going to go forward with the mission or turn the ship around to save Rocky is string-pulling of a very generic order. "Project Hail Mary" will likely be a hit, but the movie we need right now — or, really, anytime — is one whose drama exten

It would be easy to dismiss Project Hail Mary as an amalgamation of movies set in space that we have seen over the decades.
