February 23: Kamala Harris in Conversation with Randi Weingarten Join AFT President Randi Weingarten for a special AFT Book Club conversation with Kamala Harris, 49th Vice President of the United States, about her memoir, 107 Days. In 107 Days, Harris reflects on an extraordinary moment in American democracy: the period after President Biden stepped aside, her emergence as the Democratic nominee for president, and the intense days leading up to the 2024 election. The book captures the urgency, responsibility, and resolve required to lead during a defining moment, and the people and values that shaped those decisions. Together, Harris and Weingarten will discuss leadership under pressure, the role of educators, healthcare workers, public employees, and higher education professionals in sustaining democracy, and Harris’s first stop as the nominee at the AFT National Convention in July 2024. The conversation will explore what those 107 days reveal about public service, collective action, and the work required to strengthen our communities and our country for the fight ahead. Join AFT president, Randi Weingarten, and AFT EVP, Evelyn DeJesus at 6pm EST tonight (1/28) for a webinar addressing immigration enforcement and community safety. We have a great program lined up.   Immigration Enforcement: A Nation at Risk Why Schools, Hospitals, and Communities Must Remain Places of Care, Not Fear     Across the country, immigration enforcement actions are rapidly expanding in scope, visibility, and impact, with profound consequences for students, families, patients, and entire communities. The recent killings of U.S. citizens Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis has brought renewed national attention to the real and growing human costs of aggressive and insufficiently accountable enforcement practices. At the same time, the Department of Homeland Security has rescinded long-standing protected sensitive locations guidance that previously limited immigration enforcement actions in places such as schools, hospitals, and houses of worship, spaces that must remain centers of learning, healing, and refuge. The erosion of these protections, combined with an intensified deportation and enforcement agenda, is fueling fear, destabilizing classrooms, deterring families from seeking medical care, and undermining trust in essential public institutions. This webinar will examine the current state of immigration enforcement, the implications of these policy shifts, and what they mean in practice for educators, healthcare workers, students, and families. It will also highlight the AFT’s response, resources and showcase how our locals are showing up in this moment to keep schools, healthcare facilities, and community spaces free from immigration enforcement, fear, and trauma. Register!  https://lnkd.in/eJTxxJUJ   Speakers include:    ✨ Randi Weingarten, AFT president  ✨ Rep. You’ll learn: 🟢 What the First Amendment does (and doesn’t) protect for public employees and educators. 🟢 How to manage your digital footprint and engage in public discourse thoughtfully. 🟢 Strategies to safeguard yourself before becoming a target of online abuse. 🟢 What to do if you’re doxed or placed on a watchlist, with resources from PEN America. https://lnkd.in/ezyxRbA7
