Are.na

Are.na is

  1. Online software for saving and organizing the content that is important to you
  2. A toolkit for assembling new worlds from the scraps of the old
  3.
For the last 15 years and 7 days, Are.na has been a place for students, designers, academics, collectors, researchers, and many other people who defy categorization to share and connect ideas.

How it works

Showing Capture

No ads, no personalized recommendations

On Are.na, there's nothing algorithmic steering you into any particular direction.

The content you are exposed to is only based on a network you've intentionally cultivated for yourself, guided by your own internal radar.

The result is a kind of texture of a network that is both difficult to replicate and rewarding to traverse.

Long-term vision

Are.na has many co-founders. Currently, a small team is building the platform: four full-time on product, engineering, editorial and operations, and one part-time building our iOS app. The company that builds Are.na is independent and sustained entirely by our members.

Our only business is to make Are.na an experience that is worth paying for. The people who use it are our only customers. 20,516 people support Are.na through their Premium subscriptions.

API

We say there's no wrong way to use Are.na , and to prove it, we have a completely open API that you can use to build your own applications using data and functionality from Are.na.

The secret

  1. 1.
Allow yourself to go down rabbit holes

A rabbit hole is not a distraction. A rabbit hole is your brain trying to tell you to pay attention to something you’re curious about. Ignore algorithmic rabbit holes.

  2. 2.
If you see something, save something

Pay attention to what feels resonant to you. Save breadcrumbs and build a path for yourself to walk down later on. The ability to classify information in a personal way is a muscle worth exercising.

  3. 3.
    “Creativity is just connecting things”

Over time, build contexts for yourself and your ideas. Analyze what happens when you connect those contexts to someone else’s.

  4. 4.
    Remember

The goal is not self-improvement. The goal is engaging more deeply with the World.
