We're at the beginning of another heatwave with temperatures set to hit the mid 30s on Wednesday and Thursday. As we age, our bodies find it harder to adapt to more extreme temperatures, and this summer's hot weather can make some health conditions worse. We can all help keep older people safe this summer by checking in on relatives, friends, and neighbours, and offering to pick up any medication or shopping. We're supporting older people in the hot weather through local initiatives and through advice including our guide, 'Staying cool in a heatwave'. This handy leaflet has some simple but effective tips for keeping safe when the temperature rises. Download it below or on our website here: https://bit.ly/4wQWhbr

Good luck and thank you to all colleagues at our partner Dunelm this week as they embark on a step challenge inspired by our Act Now, Age Better campaign. The challenge, that will be raising vital funds for Age UK, will see Dunelm colleagues try to reach their step target through lots of different activities, a morning jog, a weekend hike or a lunchtime walk around their store. We’re so grateful for the support and look forward to seeing the challenge in action! Act Now, Age Better is all about getting moving now so that we can all look forward to a healthy later life. Local Age UKs like Age UK Wigan Borough offer vital connection and support for older people. This video showcases the positive impact services like their Bright Days programme can have. If you or a loved one would benefit from services like these, you can find support near you here 👉 https://bit.ly/4z2G4Bh
We are delighted to share our brand-new Bright Days video, showcasing the warmth, friendship and sense of community that make these groups such an important part of Age UK Wigan Borough. Every week, our Bright Days sessions bring older people together to enjoy activities, build confidence, make new friends and create meaningful connections. They are about so much more than simply getting out of the house. They help reduce loneliness, improve wellbeing and support people to remain active and independent within their communities. A huge thank you to everyone who took part in the filming and shared their stories. Your enthusiasm and kindness shine through, and we're incredibly proud to share what Bright Days is all about. Please take a few moments to watch the video and, if you believe in the importance of helping older people stay connected, we'd be grateful if you could share it with your colleagues, networks and community organisations. Together, we can help more people discover the life-changing benefits of Bright Days. #AgeUKWiganBorough #BrightDays #AgeingWell #Community #TacklingLoneliness #SocialConnection #WiganBorough #HealthyAgeing

A new study suggests the brain remains far more adaptable than previously thought and that its performance can be significantly improved at any age. As we age, our brains naturally change, but this research shows there are steps we can take to support our cognitive health throughout life. From staying physically active to maintaining social connections, keeping mentally engaged to getting quality sleep; small actions can make a meaningful difference to our brain health as we get older. How are you supporting your brain health?

Our population is ageing, and so we will see more people in their 60s caring for older parents, often struggling to juggle working life and unpaid care responsibilities.
