Follow-up: Jason Turner on abidiff

Jason Turner posted an episode of his C++ Daily YouTube channel called Detecting ABI Changes With abidiff, in which he experiments with getting abidiff tool installed and attempts to use it to detect ABI changes in a test program. The tool is written using libabigail that we talked about last time. For library vendors it could be a good idea to incorporate a tool like abidiff in their CI pipeline, so that any breaks are flagged early before the library is made available to the clients.

Monadic operations for `std::optional`

P0798R8

Sy Brand’s proposal to add monadic operations to std::optional makes it into C++23! These include map (or, as we call it in C++ for some reason, transform), and_then, and or_else. Every other language that has an Optional concept also has monadic operations for it, and now so does C++. You may not want to use these operations, but it’s nice to have the option. (See what I did there?)

Recently I’ve been struggling with a discouraging feeling about c++. I’m inspired/motivated to learn C++ (as a hobby) by all of the cool projects and games that I like that use it. The results of the survey are available, together with methodology. More than 47000 people participated in the survey from 23 geographical entities. To clean the data, they identified and threw away suspicious replies, including those that were filled too fast, multiple surveys with overlapping results and/or from the same IP address, surveys with conflicting answers (like a 18-20 year-old with 16 years of professional experience).

Redditor 14ned (Niall Douglas), a committee member, replies:

Last time I looked, it all depends on how covid goes. If normal committee work resumes early 2022, there is a chance Networking makes 23. If it’s late 2022, there is very little chance. Currently the C++ 23 standard looks like it will be a fairly light one, but given how severely curtailed the committee’s productivity has been, I still think it great anything got in at all. Equally, this probably means 26 will be a correspondingly bumper standard.

Bjarne Stroustrup on “dead bodies of type theorists”

I can’t produce a link off the top of my head, but I remember Bjarne Stroustrup saying (on a few occasions, in a talk or a panel) that “non-type template parameters were introduced in C++ over the dead bodies of some type theorists” (quote from memory). This surprises me since types depending on values is a fundamental concept in Martin-Löf type theory which is older than C++. Does anyone have any knowledge on what feedback Bjarne Stroustrup received from type theorists?

Much of traditional Rx assumes runtime polymorphism and garbage collection / ref counting. That's obviously a poor fit for C++. The sender/receiver design skews toward static polymorphism w/Generic interfaces, and explicit memory mgmt.

This was the first time, in the (exactly) 30 years since ISO was first asked to form a Working Group to standardize C++, that the committee has removed from its Working Draft a major feature, for no expressible technical reason.

Almost immediately after the feature was voted in, one party to the original agreement -- authors of the rejected 2012 design -- began to post a bewildering variety of proposals for radical changes to the design, promoting them by encouraging confusion about consequences of the agreed-upon design.

Making C++ Exception Handling Smaller On x64

Visual Studio 2019 Preview 3 introduces a new feature to reduce the binary size of C++ exception handling (try/catch and automatic destructors) on x64. Dubbed FH4 (for __CxxFrameHandler4, see below), I developed new formatting and processing for data used for C++ exception handling that is ~60% smaller than the existing implementation, resulting in overall binary reduction of up to 20% for programs with heavy usage of C++ exception handling.

- One contention point of the Coroutines TS is that it always heap-allocates the type-erased coroutine frame and relies on impressive optimization techniques to make these allocations disappear when the frame does not outlive the caller’s context. The Core Coroutine proposal offered deterministic stack allocations of coroutines frames. The issue with having the coroutine frame allocated on the stack is that it can not be optimized away without black magic. That black magic now has a name: Deferred layout. (Deemed very complex to implement by compiler vendors.)

Otherwise I'd use them all the time. <...> E.g. im working on an app using actors which send messages back and forth. Continuing the theme of C++ misnomers, value categories are not categories of values; they are characteristics of expressions.

A glvalue (generalized lvalue) is an expression whose evaluation determines the identity of an object, bit-field, or function.
A prvalue is an expression whose evaluation initializes an object or a bit-field, or computes the value of an operand of an operator, as specified by the context in which it appears.
An xvalue is a glvalue that denotes an object or bit-field whose resources can be reused (usually because it is near the end of its lifetime).
An lvalue is a glvalue that is not an xvalue.
An rvalue is a prvalue or an xvalue.

That’s a better name for this feature. Not guaranteed copy elision. Deferred temporary materialization.

Strong exception guarantee is very hard to achieve in application code: too many state changes
What to do on error:
- Collect information, send report home
- Stop further reporting, as program state is undefined
- Despite the above, carry on and never terminate!
- Server stops processing certain type of requests if too many threads hang
- Reproduce error in the lab, handle reproducible errors only
Asserts can be wrong! Don’t terminate on assert, call home instead, otherwise developers will be afraid to add asserts!
Reporting server gets 1 crash report per second on average

- The STL now uses C++14 constexpr unconditionally, instead of conditionally-defined macros.
- The STL now uses alias templates internally.
- The STL now uses std::move() internally, instead of stylistically misusing std::forward().
- The STL no longer marks functions as __declspec(dllimport). Modern linker technology no longer requires this (???)

AFTs have been controversial since their introduction, due to their ability to make template code look like non-template code. Many have argued that this is a bad idea, beacuse template code is fundamentally different from non-template code (e.g. consider different name lookup rules, the need for syntactic disambiguators like typename, and the ability to define a function out of line). Others have argued that making generic programming (programming with templates) look more like regular programming is a good thing.

- no “terse/natural syntax” for now (no consensus)

- removed function concepts “until we see a need to overload concepts”

Add designated initializers. Draft C++20 now allows code like:

Use with constructors that have initializer list that calls a user-defined constructor that can throw.
You can replace the exception being thrown and cause some useful side effects such as log the failure.
