Homelab Upgrade

Thinking of upgrading my homelab, just detailing it here so I can get some reference numbers easily.

There are a couple reasons for this, mainly space efficiency and power efficiency.

This will cut down overall space and power usage, both the amount of plugs I am using in a power board but also the overall power requirements. In terms of space it is saving, I will be replacing 3 seperate “mini” pc’s to all be consolidated into this one.

Boulder Rock

I went to this place called Boulder Rock after work, both because I needed to get some fresh air, but also because I wanted to test my (still) new camera, the OM-5 Mark II.

To actually get to the location, you follow Brookton Highway for a bit. I would heavily recommend GPS navigation for this, as actually spotting it through the trees while going 110Kph (~70Mph) is not that easy.

When you get there you can park your car on the side of the road. When I did some research before I went, I saw old(ish) posts mentioning how it used to be accessible by car, that there was signage and park benches all around it- but that has since been removed. The oldest references I could find to this was about 2011, so those signs haven’t been there for a good 15 years now.

I ran into this issue that notifications could not easily be sent to my phone. I wanted something like ntfy, but self-hosted to keep my infrastructure mine. The issue with self-hosting ntfy is that push-notifications do not work (as of 24/07/2026) on iOS, because Apple™ loves doing things differently.

iOS 16.4+ supports Web Notifications as long as the site is a PWA. This is something I can use.

What is a “PWA”?

A “PWA” is similar to an App, it can be used like an app, added to the home screen, and offer other platform specific benefits, without getting into the nitty-gritty: You can use it as if it is an app, built for the platform you are on. What makes it different though is that traditionally websites are experienced more as a place you can visit, other than a place you have. A website doesn’t (typically) have a presence on the user’s device, instead it is requested / accessed by a browser.

Last week, I was doing my usual browsing of ycombinator, when I came across a post that read Chatto is now open source, which caught my attention, especially because the post (at the time of writing) had over 1100 points, so I had to look at what all the fuss was about.

I checked out the post, and it was immediately filled with incredible- if true claims, such as “extremely easy to self-host”, “very light on resources”, “snappiest frontend that you’ve ever used in an app like this”, “fully encrypted at rest”, and “voice and video calls”. Now this wouldn’t be the first time something like this pops up and it ends up being a lot less than what you would’ve wanted, or a garbled mess of AI slop that does not work in the slightest.

Leaving Gitea

Intro

As the title states, I am leaving Gitea. I started looking for alternatives after CVE-2026-27771¹, something that allowed people to pull private container images from the built in container registry without any authentication. It existed for years, and did affect Gitea as-well as Forgejo.²

While that issue alone wasn’t enough to make me migrate, it did make me start looking at alternative options. Combined with the disclosure of CVE-2026-20896 and a number of governance concerns (specifically its less than open source company environment) that have accumulated over the past few years, I’ve decided it’s time to move elsewhere.³

Sunday (5/07/2026) I went to the Deafheaven concert in The Rechabite, went with some friends and had a ton of fun, got myself a sick Deafheaven t-shirt as well! The concert itself was great and accompanied by Gloam and Spy, though initially planned to be accompanied by Nothing, which couldn’t make it due to Visa issues unfortunately.

The energy was great and they played their entire album; Lonely People with Power.

Why?

The beginning of trouble

On my previous site, I had written my own frontmatter interpreter to make blogging easy. I did not like the complexity or feel that existing options like wordpress provided, and I did not Google much longer than 30 seconds to see if the tool I was looking for already existed. So I had coded one, from scratch… That went predictably horribly and I had to continually make changes just to accomodate new features I didn’t think of initially.

The Building

The building is the old Victoria Barracks, which was acquired by the Commonwealth in 1909 for about £3,000, equivalent to about only A$476,000 in 2022, the style is like other federation free classical buildings and is currently owned by the DoD of Australia¹.

Day 1

A warm welcome

Today, May 30th, 2026, marks 5 years since I started dating her.

As a celebration of this, we decided to splurge and get ourselves a nice hotel to stay at, and not to choose the cheapest offer we could find and instead book something a little bit more expensive to make it special- after all, we only get our 5 years once and it is quite the milestone.

We decided to head to Albany for new-years. As we arrived to meet with some family first of, I was astounded by the incredible beauty and sights that were there already.

In the area not too far from there was also the University of Western Australia, or at least a building of it. This building which once served as the post office for Albany was quite old by Australian standards (1869!).

Along the jetty, we noticed that there were some remnants of a previous jetty that was destroyed a while ago due to environmental causes. These now-unused sections of the jetty were home to napping birds.

Araluen Botanical Park

We went to this place called Araluen Botanical Park. Genuinely a really beautiful place, it was a very sunny day, the sky was clear, the flowers were blooming.

The park was filled with a variety of plants and flowers, each one was so incredibly vibrant that you just couldn’t quite capture on Camera.

Actually trying vegemite (2026 / 7 / 1)

Surprisingly it took me over a year of being in Australia to actually try Vegemite.

I had seen these reaction youtubers make videos about how horrid it tasted, but then taking a spoon full of it and just eating it like that, which is quite clearly not the way you’d be meant to eat it. How many people eat butter or margerine with a spoon?
