Lewis (Harvard University). Lewis’s piece discusses generative AI, noting that the August 2025 Guiding Principles for Artificial Intelligence in History Education included an “appended chart suggesting that students could ‘ask generative AI to produce a historical image for a paper or presentation.'” Lewis expressed shock, noting that “AI cannot produce historical images, only simulations thereof.”

Instead of asking her students to use generative AI to create “simulations” of historical images, Lewis created an assignment for her modern French history course that focused on encouraging critical thinking about the nature of images and media:

Rather than “produce a historical image,” which would be ahistorical, I want students to think about the historicity of real historical images and to reflect on how easily they can be manipulated. Concerned with the alteration of images I had seen on social media, I created an assignment in a fall 2024 lecture course that instructed students to modify a real historical image and then reflect on how manipulating it affected their understanding of the original image.

While this assignment did not use generative AI in the iteration discussed in this piece, Lewis expects that more students will choose to use AI tools as she reuses this assignment in future. As Lewis explains, while her students didn’t create historical images, “They manipulated one. And learned much more about history—and dare I say about the pitfalls of simulation—by analyzing that manipulation.”

The book “examines the Hanoi and Saigon state libraries in colonial and postcolonial Vietnam, uncovering the emergence of a colonial public who reimagined the political meaning and social space of the library through public critique and day-to-day practice.” Nguyen engages with digital humanities research methods when approaching historical evidence as data. In the Q&A she states:

There was a lot of unstructured data because they were primary sources and digital humanities gave me the intellectual background to structure and organize the data in systematic ways and to criticize it to see which spaces have data silences and biases–this type of information literacy is even more crucial and important now with the widening impact of artificial intelligence systems upon knowledge production.

Their report details the GLOW scoping study, part of the overall LUSTRE project, which has the overall aim to “connect policy makers with Computer Scientists, Digital Humanists and professionals in the GLAM sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums).” From the paper abstract:

AI can play a decisive role in making digital government records more accessible and manageable, provided that its use is grounded in responsibility and clear purpose. Work is already underway across archives and government, where AI is being used to manage scale, improve accuracy, and enhance public access to digital records – including email, PDFs, spreadsheets, images, scanned documents, audiovisual assets, and social media posts. Building on these foundations, the GLOW study identifies four interlinked priorities for responsible and effective adoption.

First, AI should be applied where it can deliver clear, measurable benefits – particularly in appraisal and selection, sensitivity review, and metadata enrichment for both textual and audiovisual materials. Interviewees repeatedly stressed that the sheer volume of born-digital records now exceeds human capacity, making manual processing unrealistic. As John Sheridan (The National Archives UK) described, effective archival AI workflows will resemble a series of sieves: simple tools handling early filtering (e.g., filetype detection, basic entity extraction), followed by increasingly sophisticated machine learning and language model techniques that surface higher value material for expert review. Used in this layered way, automation can strengthen efficiency and consistency without displacing professional judgement. For example, AI can flag personal or confidential information, identify clusters of potentially significant correspondence, or reveal hidden risks within complex files – reducing the time specialists spend on mechanical triage and enabling them to focus on interpretive and high-stakes decision making.

Second, ChatGPT and other generative AI tools have modified users’ expectations. Users increasingly expect instant, conversational access to archival information; AI‑generated summaries rather than raw documents; cross‑collection synthesis; intelligent handling of poor metadata; and personalised research support – expectations that exceed the capabilities of many archival systems. To adapt to these changing expectations, archival institutions are experimenting with new techniques and protocols such as MCP (Model Context Protocol) and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation). Used together, MCP and RAG align GenAI discovery with archival values of provenance, authenticity, accountability, and user trust.

Third, progress towards responsible AI depends on implementing a clear and accountable framework. Automation must operate within systems that guarantee transparency, traceability, and security, supported by training and governance that ensure ethical use. Many institutions are already developing policies and guidance, but a unified framework would help align practice across departments and institutions, and safeguard the integrity of public records. A clear and accountable framework for responsible AI should answer questions of purpose, transparency, human oversight, risk/security, and accountability/auditability.

Fourth, the study calls for a coordinated national strategy that connects these efforts. The National Archives (UK), working with ministerial departments and other administrations, is well placed to lead this work in partnership with the wider GLAM and academic sectors. International collaboration with bodies such as the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in the United States and the European Archives Group could extend these principles globally. Through this joined-up approach, which would integrate technology, policy, and human expertise, AI can strengthen public trust and ensure that the digital record remains secure and accessible.

From the abstract:

Drawing on examples from major digital initiatives, we analyse the life cycle of historical research data and highlight the complex interplay of commercial, institutional and scholarly interests that shape access. We argue that historians must actively participate in the practices relating to the creation, maintenance and reuse of such data. This will involve new forms of citation, favouring open datasets, improving digital skills and building communities around shared resources.

Static websites are increasingly recognized as a sustainable solution for digital editions and other scholarly publications in the Humanities. They are broadly defined as applications that do not rely, or rely only minimally, on server-side processing; some definitions restrict static websites to applications that are free of JavaScript; others embrace its use for complex client-side generation. While static websites offer durability and ease of maintenance, they may present limitations in functionality and scalability. We frame the question of static publications within the discussion about minimal computing in digital humanities and sustainability of research outputs as a research data management practice.

This special issue will consist of short reports (1,000–2,000 words) on practical experiences and lessons learned when developing, maintaining, or refactoring digital editions and other types of research outputs as static publications. Contributions may address project-specific solutions, generic workflows, automation strategies, institutional approaches, and more. Contributions from any practitioner working on digital publication are welcome, regardless of the stage or sophistication of the publication’s development. This includes boutique, shoestring publications created by PhD students or early-career researchers who may lack financial or technical support and resources, as well as large-scale projects that rely on institutional backing, development teams, practices, and infrastructure. We encourage authors to make their code and data related to their submission, or a sample of them, available in FAIR compliant repositories (e.g., Zenodo) and link to it from their article. While the emphasis is on hands-on reporting, reflective position papers discussing the definitions, sustainability, and technical or conceptual boundaries of “the static” are also welcome. Reports may describe unpublished work as well as work that has been published or presented elsewhere.

Abstracts of no more than 500 words are due April 17, 2026 and can be submitted through this Google form: https://forms.gle/Kg5Fp1dfBfTn6jsi9.

The hybrid conference, which will take place in Washington, DC, and online on September 15-17, 2026, is co-hosted by the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian Institution.

The conference theme of “Trust in the Loop” extends the concept of “humans in the loop” to the work that LAM (library, archive, museum) institutions must do to ensure AI-enabled services center trust, authenticity, and accountability. The call for proposals solicits submissions in four areas:

Topic 1: Implementations – LAMs work within real constraints, including limited resources, legacy systems, complex data, and responsibilities to staff, users, and communities; how are AI tools and systems are being implemented in libraries, archives, and museums?

Topic 2: Data – responsible AI implementation depends on the quality, structure, and context of data; how are LAMs addressing these underlying data issues?

Topic 3: People – AI adoption affects users, visitors, patrons, staff, and communities; how are LAMs supporting people within and outside of the “AI loop”?

Topic 4: Models & Infrastructure – LAMs have a long tradition of collaboration around professional practices, open tools, and shared infrastructure; how are LAMs approaching infrastructure development and maintenance for AI?

Proposals are due Monday, April 6, 2026; full submission instructions are available here.

ITHAKA’s mission is to expand access to knowledge and education around the world. Our services — JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S+R — enable people everywhere to learn, to grow, and to overcome barriers to education. In carrying out our mission, as employees we feel a deep responsibility to members of our community and to each other, and we are committed to building and sustaining a culture where everyone can thrive.

The Role

Reveal Digital, part of JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services at ITHAKA, creates open digital collections that expand access to primary sources. Reveal Digital works with a diverse group of stakeholders to bring together materials that document important cultural, social, and political histories, especially those that have been dispersed, under-described, or difficult to access at scale.

As Curator for Digital Collections, you will support the development of digital collections through research, evaluation of primary source materials, and collaboration with contributing institutions. You will work with libraries, archives, and individual contributors to identify and evaluate materials, secure participation and help guide collections through digitization and publication in partnership with colleagues to ensure collections are prepared, described, and published for meaningful scholarly use.

This role requires strong research skills and the ability to work as a generalist across a range of subject areas. You will investigate unfamiliar topics, assess the relevance and significance of primary source materials, shape the interpretive and descriptive framing that makes collections usable for scholarship and teaching, and collaborate with subject experts and contributors to build collections responsibly. Success in this role depends on sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently within established program frameworks, while contributing to a collaborative program-centered and mission-driven approach for Reveal Digital.

Responsibilities

Identify and evaluate primary source materials for inclusion in Reveal Digital collections through independent research and engagement with libraries, archives, and other contributors.

Serve as a primary partner-facing lead for contributing institutions and individuals, building relationships that support sustained participation, shared expectations, and responsible stewardship.

Coordinate the acquisition of materials, including rights and permissions documentation as needed.

Translate curatorial intent into publication-ready plans by partnering with internal teams to move materials through digitization, metadata creation, quality review, and publication; ensure that workflows and outputs align with the collection’s intellectual and ethical goals.

Contribute to collection descriptions, metadata review, and contextual materials to support discovery and scholarly use.

Maintain accurate project tracking and documentation, ensuring collection progress, permissions status, and publication readiness are clearly recorded.

Review digital materials and metadata to help ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project goals.

Communicate regularly with internal and external partners to support coordination, resolve issues, and maintain project progress.

Maintain high-level visibility into collection progress and risks, including publication readiness, rights constraints that affect scholarly access, and dependencies across partners; escalate issues that require program leadership decisions.

Contribute to outreach and field engagement as a curator and program representative, including presentations, partner conversations, and professional convenings that strengthen Reveal Digital’s collaborations and scholarly impact.

Experience and Skills

3 – 5 years of experience working with primary source collections, archives, libraries, digital collections, or related cultural heritage materials.

Experience working with digital collections, metadata, digitization, or related publishing workflows.

Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to identify, evaluate, and contextualize primary source materials and develop working knowledge of potentially unfamiliar subject areas.

Strong writing and editorial skills, including experience producing interpretive or contextual materials that support discovery and scholarly use.

Demonstrated interest in expanding access to primary sources and supporting inclusive, collaborative cultural heritage work.

Ability to work independently and manage projects of moderate scope and complexity while collaborating effectively with colleagues and external partners.

Ability to build and maintain relationships with contributing institutions and individuals with professionalism and care.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, including experience tracking projects and managing documentation.

Familiarity with copyright, permissions, and rights research practices.

Facility with Airtable welcomed.

Work Authorization and Sponsorship

ITHAKA is not currently considering candidates who require any type of immigration sponsorship (additional work authorization or permanent work authorization) to work in the United States.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting salary for this position ranges from $63,000 to $79,000 per year. Starting pay may vary with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
