Ruoxi Jia is an Assistant Professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, where she directs the Responsible Data Science Lab (ReDS Lab). She is also affiliated with the Sanghani Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics.
Prior to joining Virginia Tech, she completed her postdoctoral training and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at University of California, Berkeley and received her B.S. from Peking University.
Her research aims to build AI systems that are efficient, reliable, safe, and socially beneficial. Much of her work develops the theory and systems for data intelligence—methods that diagnose how training data shapes model behavior, design principled data interventions to improve capability, efficiency, and alignment, and secure AI pipelines against adversarial manipulation.
Her work has influenced industry practices at companies such as Amazon and Google, and has been featured in outlets including The New York Times, IEEE Spectrum, and MIT Technology Review.
