Customize your pages with starter content

Last reviewed on March 4, 2026

Starter content helps you quickly build beautiful pages without starting from scratch. When you create a new page, you can choose from pre-designed content sections that match your theme. This guide will show you how to add starter content.

Add starter content

You can add starter content to a new page or an existing page following the steps below.

Add starter content to a new page

If your theme includes starter patterns, you will see the option to select a pattern when you create a new page. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to Pages → Add New to create a new page.
  2. A window will automatically appear with patterns to pick from.
  3. Browse through the options, and click a pattern to add it to your page.
  4. You’ll be taken to the editor to customize your starter content before you publish the page.

Add starter content to an existing page

You can access starter content at any time while editing your page:

  1. Click the + Block Inserter button at the top left of the editor.
  2. Select the “Patterns” tab.
  3. Click the “Starter content” category and browse through the options.
    • If you do not see the Starter content category, your theme does not have starter content. You can use other block patterns instead.
  4. Click a pattern to add it to your page.
  5. Customize your starter content.

Customize starter content

After you add starter content to a page, you can edit the content within the pattern — such as text, images, and links — directly on the page. The pattern’s layout stays locked so you don’t accidentally break the design.

Edit the content of a starter pattern

To edit the content of a starter pattern, follow these steps:

  1. Click on any text, image, or button within the pattern.
  2. Make your changes. You can type new text, replace images, or update links.
  3. Use the block settings sidebar to adjust styles like colors or fonts for individual blocks.

Edit the layout of a starter pattern

To change the layout or structure of a starter pattern, follow these steps:

  1. Use List View to select the pattern on your page.
  2. Click the “Edit pattern” button in the block toolbar.
The "Edit pattern" option highlighted in the block toolbar.
  1. Make your structural changes — you can move, remove, or add blocks.
  2. To exit the pattern editor, select the pattern (using List View) and click the “Exit pattern” option in the block toolbar.
The "Exit pattern" option highlighted in the block toolbar.

Enable or disable starter content

Starter content is enabled by default if your theme has starter content. If you have disabled starter content and want to enable the option to show it when you create a new page, follow these steps:

  1. When editing any page, click the Options menu () next to the “Publish” button in the top-toolbar.
  2. Select “Preferences” from the menu.
  3. Under Interface, toggle the setting to “Show starter patterns“.
  4. Next time you create a page, you will start with your selected preference whether to show or not show starter patterns.

You can also add starter content to an existing page.
