Trying to find the best pressing of this iconic record has been quite an adventure and is still ongoing for me. It's a very tough nut to crack! I have researched for years and bought multiple copies, most all in ex/ex+ condition - George Piros US pressings, 1st US pressings (not cut by George Piros) including an original white label promo, various plum label first and early UK pressings including uncorrected 8's turquoise label, a White Hot Stamper shoot-out winning pressing from Better Records (which without being specific is neither US nor UK). So far, the US George Piros pressings generally sound the best to me, but the early non-turquoise cover UK pressings are nearly their equal. The turquoise cover uncorrected matrix (ex+ clean vinyl) sounds great but is clearly not the best to my ears. The Better Records White Hot Stamper is outstanding but I like the sonics of my best George Piros US press more. The hardest part of all this is finding clean copies - nearly impossible and has taken me years to get to this point, most all the dozen or so copies I own sound amazing, some just sound a little more amazing than the others. I still need to find specific Piros pressings that are considered the "best of the best" but they are extremely rare and one day I will buy them and compare.
Let s get another thing straight. You can kid yourself all you want that this is the best sounding pressing just because you ridiculously overpaid for this :))
proudly own this absolute grail of a piece, the depth on this piece sounds like a totally different album in comparison to the later pressings. so perfectly balanced and mixing is phenomenal. although my copy is slightly louder it’s incredible.
especially tracks like dazed and confused, Black Mountajn Side and how many more times were really really heavy sounding.
feels like i’ve been teleported back to 1969 in the London Atlantic studio. can’t explain it, worth every penny, will never part ways with it.
I have version 2 with the Superhype mis credit on side one but also on side two Track two Black Mountain Side is printed too high so it is almost touching the track one listing has anyone ever seen this?
Hi, can anybody help to identify my pressing? Matrix is: ST-A-681461-A, then comes somehing like EΓ (maybe the 73 mirrored), then AT RG W. Many Thanks!
