- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2026Color: ClearVerified PurchaseThis review is for SABRENT 2.5 Inch SATA to USB 3.0 Tool Free Clear External Hard Drive Enclosure [Optimized for SSD, Supports UASP SATA III] (EC-OCUB). I have a 320GB drive and a 1TB drive from two very old Dell and HP laptops that I no longer have but I kept these drives “just in case”, never thinking that I’d ever be able to read them, EVER. Well, with this enclosure, I was finally able to access everything on those old drives. I actually bought this clear enclosure and an aluminum enclosure at the same time to compare them. While I like this clear enclosure for how cool it looks and how easy it is to insert my old SATA 2.5” drive into it, I thought the plastic felt a bit “weak” and wanting. The speed was also fast as far as i could tell. If not for the coolness factor, I’d say to go with the aluminum enclosure because it’s nice and solid but just takes a little more work to slip the drive into it. Overall, this is one of my best findings so far this year. After almost a decade of holding on to the old SATA drive from my laptops I can finally access all my old files and/or reuse the drives for backup. I am so psyched about this! I’m not too wild about the thin plastic feel of this enclosure so I’d give it a 4.5/5.0 - 03/20/2026.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2026Color: ClearVerified PurchaseThese work very well and are inexpensive. With the Sabrent case being clear, one can see the brand of the enclosed SATA, so that they can, in a family setting where several drives might be used, be readily identified. I used a couple of these for my daughter's and granddaughter's old laptop SATA drives so they can tell them apart.
Anyone can mount an old 2.5-inch SATA drive pulled from an old computer in one of these to access the data. Or install a new SATA drive in one and use it as a backup or secondary storage.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2021Color: ClearVerified PurchaseI'm going to keep the two enclosures I bought since they are so cheap
however these are *NOT* high performance enclosures as far as I can
tell (having only one non USB3 enclosure to compare it to.)
I'm using a a tool called hdparm and I'm going to show the "buffered
disk reads" since "cached reads" are very similar even with my M2
drive which is obviously higher performance than all others.
Here is the performance of *this* enclosure with the 1 TB samsung
drive when connected to a non "SS" port.
$ sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb1
Timing buffered disk reads: 120 MB in 3.04 seconds = 39.46 MB/sec
Connected to an SS port, I get very similar performance (while I hoped
it would improve):
$ sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb1
Timing buffered disk reads: 120 MB in 3.04 seconds = 39.47 MB/sec
This doesn't really *prove* that much. Maybe my non SS ports are
actually SS ports. Since some peripherals work in the SS ports and
others don't (how lame) they have *some* difference so I do basically
trust this result already but you should require more proof.
Let's check out what happens when I use the bigger brother 4 TB SSD
drive which is now connected directly to the motherboard using the
SATA port:
$ sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sda
Timing buffered disk reads: 1596 MB in 3.00 seconds = 531.82 MB/sec
The buffered disk reads has jumped from 39 MB/sec to 531 MB/sec. This
is more in line with what I was hoping for. While 531 MB/sec is
impressive, an SS port is actually rated at 625 MB/sec so the drive
could in theory still be supported at full speed with an SS port and
thus in theory it's little brother drives could also work that fast
with a kick ass enclosure.
Before I deliver the death blow, here is what my 512MB "M2" main drive
plugged into the motherboard delivers:
$ sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/nvme0n1p1
Timing buffered disk reads: 512 MB in 0.42 seconds = 1228.80 MB/sec
This is clearly why if you have a choice, you really want a really big
"M2" style drive. BTW, M2 style drives differ in length -- I had to
return one 2 years ago because it was too long to fit in my tiny ass
motherboard because I opted for a small system (a mistake).
**But here is the death blow.**
I have a *non* SS enclosure I bought a few years ago so let's
benchmark that (it doesn't work in my SS usb ports so only one
number):
$ sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb1
Timing buffered disk reads: 104 MB in 3.01 seconds = 34.52 MB/sec
My conclusion is that the "SABRENT 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 3.0" enclosure
being reviewed by me is only better than by old USB 2 one by 15%
though they do work in any USB port I hook it up to.
The good:
* It appears to work reliably in any USB port including SS ports
* My model of SSD fit perfectly and nothing will wiggle once installed
* Backing up 500 GB will take about 2 hours - not great but OK for
incremental backup with something like time-machine, etc.
* The transparent case option is very, very nice. I can now see what's
inside without taking anything apart. The flashing red LEDs (there
is a always on blue LED too) could be annoying to some but OK for
me. ((Just finished my copy and unmounted, the red LED turned off
though the blue LED is still on. This is good.))
* My slower enclosure was actually a mesh material. After a 2 hour
backup, while there was a slight hotspot, if you're using with an
SSD and not a rotational disk, I don't think you'll have a problem
at all.
* The cost of $10 is very reasonable. I probably will not return for
precisely this reason.
The Bad:
* This enclosure seems to perform only incrementally better than a 2
year old enclosure rated for USB 2 no matter if hooked into an SS or
non SS USB port.
* While it's not hard to slip *in* the SSD drive, it's a bit hard to
remove a drive once inserted (though certainly not impossible to
remove -- I've already done so at least twice). Had they simply left
the "bottom" open (the part with the electronics) it would be really
easy to slide in and out using thumb friction. Then slipping on the
top would have secured everything in just the same manner with no
gaps for dust or anything provided the "top" went all the way down
on the back. It's a very trivial change. I'm not an expert on
injected molded plastic but for crying out loud this can't really
cost that more and five minutes of user testing should have
discovered exactly this.
* Although the correct cable is supplied, the USB Micro-B connector on
the drive side is very weird (outside of the external hard drive
world - perhaps par for the course - two Seagate external drives I
have use this same stupid connector). The mesh USB SATA enclosure
had an almost equally hated Mini USB cable though I actually had a
few of those because I hoard cables and cell phones and Palm pilots
used this briefly in like 2008.
