Contribute to Accessibility at WordCamp Asia 2026 Contributor Day

WordCamp Asia 2026 is coming soon! This year’s WCAsia will take place in Mumbai, India, from April 9 to 11, 2026. The AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) Team works to make WordPress as accessible as possible for as many people as possible, and we are always looking for new contributors. We look forward to meeting many people who are interested in accessibility at Contributor Day.

Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/ Schedule

What Should I Prepare to Contribute?

The most important thing is your desire to make WordPress accessible. Whether your interests are in code, testing, or documentation, we will guide you to the best way to contribute. If you would like to contribute with code, we recommend setting up a local development environment in advance.

If you are joining online, please join the #accessibility SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/ channel and feel free to say hello to us.

Our Goals

One of the main goals of Contributor Day is to welcome contributors who are interested in accessibility and guide them on how to get involved. Below are some examples of specific goals:

  • Contribute to Documentation: Learn what documentation exists and how it is managed. Read the documentation and report areas that could be improved. Write new documentation.
  • Contribute to Code: Set up a development environment. Identify accessibility-related issues. Learn how to work on those issues.
  • Contribute to Testing: Test accessibility-related issues. Test WordPress and identify and report accessibility problems.

About Table Leads

Experienced members will support you. Please feel free to ask any questions—about what accessibility is, how you can contribute, what is required to contribute code, or anything else.

Helpful Resources

If you would like to learn about accessibility, we recommend reviewing the WP Accessibility Knowledge Base in advance. This document is a comprehensive accessibility guideline for WordPress and is continuously being improved. If you are interested in helping improve the documentation, please visit the GitHub repository.

Are you interested in contributing through testing or code? The Accessibility Handbook has a helpful page for finding accessibility-related tasks.

Another helpful resource is the Contributor Pathway for testing accessibility.

Props to @krupajnanda and @joedolson for peer review of this post.

@rianrietveld shared the updates for docs team as mentioned below.

  • Work is ongoing to extend and update documentation around alternative text (alt text) for images in WordPress

Generic Updates was shared by @joedolson. He is currently working on preparing the post about accessibility changes in WordPress 7.0 release and working on identifying tickets targeted for 7.1 release.

He mentioned that most focus right now should be on testing 7.0, to ensure that any new issues or regressions are caught before the actual release.

@joedolson also mentioned that the work on the theme accessibility-ready updates has been delayed due to the complexity of last-minute changes in WordPress 7.0 release. It is expected to resume post-release.

Currently work is done on documentation on focus management, alt text, WCAG intro, business accessibility, and legislation.

General Updates

@joedolson shared many updates, with a few items still being worked on.
Only one accessibility ticket remains open for the WordPress 7.0 milestone (likely won’t make it), 32 tickets were closed for 7.0, focus will shift to accessibility goals for 7.1 after RC1, and RCRelease Candidate A beta version of software with the potential to be a final product, which is ready to release unless significant bugs emerge. is the key time to review and fix accessibility issues in new features before final release.

Documentation

The team removed most of the Accessibility Handbook content from the Make Accessibility site and replaced it with pointers linking to the new documentation. This change was made to avoid the need to maintain two separate sets of documentation. The remaining content focuses on information about how contributors can get involved and contribute to the Accessibility Team.

General Updates

@joedolson shared many updates, with a few items still being worked on.

  • Tickets that already have patches but have not yet been committed should ideally be either committed or punted within the week.
  • Early testing of patches is highly valuable and helps move things forward more quickly. Overall, the project is in good shape, although there are still a few tickets that need to be completed.

  • The top priority should be testing the output of any new blocks, as those are the most difficult to modify after release, though there are also several new interfaces to review.
  • Contributors are encouraged to explore the release features and test them thoroughly, including navigating without a mouse, checking control names, and enabling visible label features.
