Long-term tailored support to incubate research that could serve neglected agendas within AI interpretability, alignment, and governance. Previous AI safety experience is not required– researchers only need deep expertise in the area of application and an understanding of the problem it could solve. Work on one of the areas of research interest, or entice us to add your area into our research portfolio.

What We Offer
The Affiliate Program provides highly tailored support according to what counterfactually helps you most make progress on your research.
Support includes:
- Salary: $6,000-10,000/month per FTE (higher for exceptional candidates)
- Quarterly research retreats with affiliates and alignment researchers
- Personalized research, engineering, and strategic support
- Access to PrincInt research community, Slack space, and extended network
- Financial support for conferences and compute access
- Office space access (depending on needs/preferences)
Initial affiliation is 6 months, with review for possible 12-month extension. In exceptional cases, initial offers are 12 months. Our vision is to provide a long-term home for our style of alignment research, including permanent positions.
Who Should Apply
We select affiliates positioned to pursue promising PrincInt-aligned research in a highly self-directed fashion.
We look for:
- Scholarly competence in your domain(s) of expertise
- Strong prior understanding of, or genuine commitment to learning about, AI risk and alignment
- Evidence of good research judgment and taste
- Promising proposed research direction
- Ability to counterfactually benefit from PrincInt support
- Strong self-management and research productivity
Great PrincInt researchers often have non-standard backgrounds. We encourage individuals with varied backgrounds and perspectives to apply.
You do not need a specific project in mind when applying. We help match fellows with mentors and develop projects during the interview process.
