Such a spectacular way to shift perspectives in the world of soulslike games. Adored this narrative twist! The pixel art in this is divine! Thank you for a wonderful experience!
Hello! I made this video in short format, talking a bit about the game with a humorous tone and some of the central dialogues between the queen and the heroine (with spoilers).
In case anyone from the Spanish-speaking community on itch.io or fans of the game is interested. Thank you—great game. Sending a hug!
Really fun game but the controls are quite unnatural and oddly uncomfortable. I hoped to see an option to change key bindings in the settings but there dont appear to be settings.
The concept is truly very creative, and playing the game is really enjoyable. It turned out to be a fantastic game—great job, and congratulations on your work.
The story is so much fun. I really enjoyed the character development of the Dark Queen. The artwork is beautiful to look at, especially when the magic gets quite intense. 5/5 stars. I can't wait to play Mosu's other games!
Hi^^ reallyyyyy cool idea !! It was a big joy to discover this game !! So... here a little video of the gameplay. It's in FR but hope you'll appreciate it^^
In a way, both the Queen and the Hero are players, just from completely different genres of games. I'm kinda curious if that's intentional or not.
The Hero - this one is obvious. They are a player of a souls-like, obviously. Games which are brutally difficult, but are designed to be beatable. We can see this in Queen's attacks, which are designed to be avoided by all of their abilities. I find it kind of funny though that they know the hitboxes of your attacks so well considering how bad and unintuitive the hitboxes were in the original souls games (they're still kind of bad here, just in an opposite way). It's kind of another instance of "time flies faster in games" trope, which, while not realistic, an easy way to add variety to the gameplay, so I'm not gonna complain or deduce points for that.
The Queen - she is a player of an infinite game. No wonder she talks about eternity so much. But ironically, her true destiny is to eventually lose. These games often start off very easy. But eventually, the game becomes more and more difficult. Some games get stuck in a loop (Tetris and Pac-Man wrap around to level 1), some become impossible and some actually become unlosable (In Alien Shooter, infinite mode eventually stops spawning the enemies). For her, the "play session" is all of the fights with the Hero from the beginning to the end. I know that the game is finite and the Hero can be defeated but still, the design philosophy is exactly the same. Despite this, her side of the story still very similar to a soulslike: her enemy gradually gets stronger and stronger, making last, most punishing phases incredibly hard to practice. Now, gameplay wise, this is not a perfect boss design, but I wouldn’t really mind it, if not for the fact that the game is filled with unskippable cuscenes/animations. I know that this is “you’re not supposed to win this” kind of endings but that’s not an excuse to make this ending so painful to get, so points go bye bye. It’s not like I didn’t play levels that took me hours though. In RIP3 “starting weapon only” challenge, which isn’t even supposed to be beatable, I had to do the same thing in some levels for abbout 45 minutes. Emphasis on “same” (making the learning curve more forgiving than you’d expect) and “doing” (there, waiting around was one of many options, and was not forced by animations). There were a couple of other factors that made the experience more enjoyable like fluent controls and predictable enemy behavior but i digress.
7/10 The game has amazing storytelling, but after your second run you literally exhaust all dialogue options, making the gameplay flaws all the more apparent, because there is no more drama to distract you from them. And, fittingly, I’m likely moving on from this game, but for all the wrong reasons. For now, at least.
For gameplay though it seems like the code eventually knows exactly how to space the user with the user then having no way of victory which when I noticed it in the first phase, then again in the 2nd phase made the game lose its luster? Ultimately still a wonderful game.
It's an interesting concept, the second reverse Souls-like boss game I've tried since Reversary.
Definitely more of a drama focus than the former's laid back casual comedy, but it's funny that the hero actually rage quits if you beat him enough times.
Lovely game! I liked the idea of us finally being the boss at the end for the hero to defeat! I honestly was just forcing a little love story lol but yeah the hero usually wins in the end. I loved the way they interacted and how the game looks, its very impressive:3
I really like the game, however the hitboxes of some attacks are awfull, i know that the goal is too loose, but i would have liked something less frustrating (and less forced too, at the "end" i landed an attack on him with the claws, and instead of him dying since he had 1 HP, it's me who died).
This game has a lot of potential, please continue the developpement tout get a more complete and lang game !
I loved this game so so much! There was a bug after the 'one last time' battle however, where when I killed the hero (and killed them again the next round to get to the 'am I even improving' bit) I got stuck in an infinite loop where the hero got injured by just approaching me and died after 2 hits when they had 3 lives. I had to restart my run through, but that was a benefit in the end since due to my better attack gameplay to my surprise I got different dialogue options! The ending was very touching and I'm glad to have experienced it :D
The Dark Queen of Mortholme offers a truly fun and beautiful gaming atmosphere. Unlike classic indie games, in this game, we are the boss at the end of the level. I had a lot of fun playing the game. Also, to introduce the game to players in my country and help them easily understand the story, I uploaded a video with Turkish subtitles and dubbing to my YouTube channel. If you'd like to watch the video, I've included the link to my YouTube video below. I wish everyone good gaming and enjoyable viewing.
This is the most intense experience I've had from an Itch game - I adored every second of it. I just finished it, and I feel like I have to lie down on a fainting couch and just breathe for an hour
I seem to be running in issues with the game, sometimes all of a sudden certain keys seem to be kept down, even though they aren’t physically being pressed nor seem to have any issues in other apps. This makes it difficult for me to play the game, or even outright impossible.
I am also having this problem and it's driving me insane. Haven't been able to play past the a few hero deaths despite my many attempts and trying both keyboard and controllers.
Hello. In Russia, we really love your game. I would like to ask for your permission to dub it into Russian. Whether it's official or not, it's important that you allow it. As fans, we would love to further engage the audience with the game through dubbing. If there is a possibility to do so within the game, we would appreciate it. Sorry for my bad English.
Cool idea, cool visual but... Too long animation, your atack dont placing in queue to hit then animation of previous atack finish (its kinda inportant for this typo of game). While playing u dont know there your atack ending and where next start, too long "standing" animation before and after every atack move. In general i would love to play in this game again (or in better version of this game in future when control\animation issue will be fixed. Coz rn u write game not for player, but for npc)
I think the slow animations are so that the game proceeds as intended. Queenie's unresponsive attacks are exactly how Hero is able to eventually win. The point is that her loss is, eventually, inevitable.
If her attacks were more responsive, they'd have to script Hero's victory, and that wouldn't be as good.
A thought provoking game about the role obstacles (even really big scary ones) play in our development. I really liked it! Play it and see what it means to you.
A poignant masterpiece.
I found its story, while somewhat simple, to be very thoughtful, thoughtprovoking, and wise. The characters themselves and aspects to them, like the Queen’s hopelessness/denial of improvement, add lots of depth.
It lacks minor, very specific, player interactions but those barely matter for the most important aspects are covered. Despite how much the story hurts, this game made my day and has left an imprint on me more than once at this point.
Hero/Queen relationship aside, I felt a lot of deny from the Queen's true self ("It's all I've been given. There's nothing to change. You are the only one to have this opportunity given." / "What are you afraid of ? - To lose who I am." / "Eternal things do exist. Will you brandish your swords against laws of nature now ?" BTW sorry if my quotes are not verbatim, I played in french) that hit really hard as a trans person. And I'm not even talking about her final form which she's afraid of showing.
So, really an LGBTQ+ (anti)game to me.
I'm not sure I can do more that 3 runs though, it's a bit too painful to me. But it's an absolutely amazing game. Thank you.

I cannot express how much I loved this game. The art alone was heartbreaking, let alone the melancholy writing. Great work!

Solid game - really enjoyed my time with it!

Good one! First game I've played on itch in years, despite owning multiple justice bundles with thousands of games.
is this how radahn felt
Very nice game, although very frustrating. Loved it, i'll try to get the other endings eventually
there are more ENDINGS?!
that was a lot of fun, even if it was frustrating ^^

Muy entretenido, mee ncanta la idea de tener que perder para ganar el jeugo!
What a neat little game... I enjoyed it...

PLEASE add a romance ending I BEG YOU

I believe there is an issue with your keyboard, sadly. We don’t show any issues involving key detection
I am also having this problem and it's driving me insane. Haven't been able to play past the a few hero deaths despite my many attempts and trying both keyboard and controllers.
Is it possible to download the game on mobile?
Very good anti-game with short but good story
Está chulo el juego, buen girito a la narrativa del héroe. Lo jugué en steam y hablo un poquito de él en este vídeo:
honestly the best game i've played in 2025
what a masterpiece! thank you very much, I wish you the best in your life as a game designer

I bought this on Gog.
Tried to run on Linux through Lutris and didn't work.
Found this and there's a linux version. Yay!
Will you please add the Linux version to Gog?

That probably explains a part of why I resonate so heavily with the Queen.
The lesson this game teaches can be applied to many many things in life.
All that exists is not meant to end, but to move on.
I loved it. The art is gorgeous, the music really good and the story really beautiful!
