Inspection FAQ

What does the Artificial Climbing Structures standard EN 12572-1 say about climbing wall inspection?

There are three types of inspection based on its in-depth: routine visual, operational and main inspection

  • Routine Visual Inspection
    It serves to identify obvious defects and sources of danger on the front side of the climbing wall, which
    can be easily seen from the ground without use of means of support. That includes cleanness, loose
    holds, obstacles placed in the free space, missing parts, excessive wear and other obvious damage. It
    should be carried on a daily basis by the climbing wall operator.
  • Operational Inspection
    This is a more detailed inspection to check the operation and stability of the equipment, and the wear of
    its components. This shall be carried every 1 to 3 months if not otherwise indicated by the manufacturer.
    The operational inspections shall be documented. Special attention shall be paid to protection points and
    the mechanisms of articulated walls.
  • Main Inspection
    It serves to establish the overall level of safety of the ACS, its foundations, structural frame and wall
    surfaces, e.g. effects of weather wear out, evidence of decay or corrosion, any change in the level
    of safety of the equipment as a result of repairs made, or of added or replaced components. Main
    inspections shall be documented.

What does the Walltopia inspection cover?

  • Examination of the current condition of the attachment of the wall elements to the construction;
  • Examination of the current condition of the attachment of the construction to the building;
  • Examination of the current condition and extent of depreciation of all safety reliant attachments of the top-ropes;
  • Examination of the current condition of all safety points;
  • Examination of the current condition of all bolted connections;
  • Fixing any loose safety anchor points and top rope anchors;
  • Visual inspection with respect to cleanness, missing parts, safety distances and overall safety;

What type of documentation does the inspection come with?

Signed inspection protocol, including:

  • Date of the inspection
  • List of performed activities
  • List of identified defects if any
  • Photos of any defects noticed
  • Name and signature of the person performing the inspection, the project manager of the project and a
    structural engineer

Please note that the inspection protocol is due 3 days after the inspection and is being sent from the
head office. It is not signed on the venue.

How much does the inspection cost?

Walltopia inspection is priced per sq.m. There is a minimum fee of 400 EUR for smaller scale projects.

What does the price includes?

  • Inspection & documentation by a qualified team.

What does the price excludes?

  • Flights and accommodation (calculated separately)

How long does an inspection take?

It depends on the size of the climbing wall, the accessibility and the size of the inspection team.
On average 2 people inspect about 500 sq.m of climbing surface per day

Can the inspection be performed during the gym’s non-working hours?

Yes, we can accommodate to any specific hours at an additional charge.

How are the defective parts being dealt with (if any)?

The inspection aims to examine the wall and describe any damages noticed. The climbing gym should be the
