Does just thinking about the laws of motion make your head spin? Does studying electricity short your circuits? Do the complexities of thermodynamics cool your enthusiasm?

Thanks to this book, you don’t have to be Einstein to understand physics. As you read about Newton’s Laws, Kepler’s Laws, Hooke’s Law, Ohm’s Law, and others, you’ll appreciate the For Dummies law: The easier we make it, the faster people understand it and the more they enjoy it! Whether you’re taking a class, helping kids with homework, or trying to find out how the world works, this book helps you understand basic physics. It covers:

  • Measurements, units, and significant figures
  • Forces such as displacement, speed, and acceleration
  • Vectors and physics notation
  • Motion, energy, and waves (sound, light, wave-particle)
  • Solids, liquids, and gases
  • Thermodynamics
  • Electromagnetism
  • Relativity
  • Atomic and nuclear structures

Steven Holzner, Ph.D. earned his B.S. at MIT and his Ph.D. at Cornell, where he taught Physics 101 and 102 for over 10 years. He livens things up with cool physics facts, real-world examples, and simple experiments that will heighten your enthusiasm for physics and science. The book ends with some out-of-this world physics that will set your mind in motion:

    • The possibility of wormholes in space
    • The Big Bang
    • How the gravitational pull of black holes is too strong for even light to escape

May the Force be with you!

This is a book that introduces the concepts that you will learn in a first-semester physics class, like the laws of motion, gravitation, conservation of energy, and the like. It does have some examples, and some problems that you can work out on your own, but it is mostly the kind of explanatory material that you get in the chapter reading. But, it distills all of the concepts so that they are generally more understandable than what you get from a textbook (and some teachers). It is definitely geared more toward high school physics or what in college is referred to as algebra-based physics. As most people who have taken calculus-based physics already know, calculus is mainly used to derive the equations, but you still mainly use algebra to solve the problems. So, what most teachers do is, in algebra-based physics classes they assign the "easier" versions of the problems and in calculus-based physics classes, they assign the harder problems. So, the kind of examples and the problems in this are definitely the easier versions, but it is a good primer even if you are going to be taking calculus-based physics because it will introduce you to the concepts, give you some experience with solving physics problems, and put you in a good position once you start class. And, for those who get this just because they want to learn something about physics, or refresh their knowledge of the subject, it is good for that too.

I bought this book as an aid for the course that the author use to teach at Cornell -- an autotutorial physics course. It is very helpful with extra examples and straight-forward explanations. It does not have problems in it, but I knew that and did not need them. It is also in the same order as the textbook for my class (College Physics), which makes it easy to follow along.

I FOUND THIS TO BE A REALLY VALUABLE QUICK REFERENCE TO USE WHEN TRYING TO

EXPLAIN SOME OF THE MORE COMPLEX CONCEPTS FOUND IN FLUID MECHANICS.

THE MATH IS KEPT TO A MINIMUM, BUT PRIOR MATH EXPOSURE IS MOST HELPFUL.

I DID NOTICE SOME CONFUSION IN CHAPTER TWO (2) WHERE AN EXPLANATION TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS IS GIVEN, THIS IS A MINOR THING BUT MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS TO THE UNFAMILAR STUDENT.

ALL IN ALL THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK AND I RECOMEND IT TO ALL.

Delivery took a while, but I was willing to wait to get the price. Arrived in fabulous condition, a few dog earred pages, but again, the price was right.

This is a very neat and clear guide. It explains almost everything.
It shows you the steps clearly, it repeats equations that were written before every time that it is needed. It doesn't jump quickly into something new. It writes why to use these equations. Everything suddenly makes sense.
What is missing from this book is practice. It would be nice to have something to solve for yourself and then check in the back if the solution is correct. However it gives good examples.

I bought this for my armchair science hobby and it's ok for that purpose I suppose. It's more suited for students that are still in school with a fresh understanding of math as that is what physics is mostly. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone just interested in broad scientific knowledge as it's mainly just learning equations and such.

Although I dropped out of my physics class before the semester started, this book helped me achieve my dream of learning what vectors are all about. If I ever take physics again, I'll be sure to give it another glance.
