Explain how and why the package falls under these categories (briefly, 1-2 sentences). Please note any areas you are unsure of:
This package is an adaptation of citesdb. It provides the original census data and cartographies (Chile) in SQLite format, alongside functions to import the data, process the maps, etc. What is important about this package is that it has local impact and solves the problem that the original format (REDATAM) puts Mac and Linux users under the need of using a virtual machine or another laptop since it can only be read with a specific Windows-only program, and the REDATAM converter is also Windows-only. The original data comes in DVD format, so I had to obtain one to read it.
- Who is the target audience and what are scientific applications of this package?
Economists, sociologists and professionals who need demographic data. The audience is focused in Chile.
- Are there other R packages that accomplish the same thing? If so, how does yours differ or meet our criteria for best-in-category?
Not at the moment.
- (If applicable) Does your package comply with our guidance around Ethics, Data Privacy and Human Subjects Research?
Yes.
- Any other questions or issues we should be aware of?:
- It is heavily inspired in citesdb.
- I hope other users from Latin America can adapt this for their countries.
- It contains anonymous people's data, which can only be identified at zone level (zone = sub-district area), as the original data protects the statistical secret
