To the Python community in the Philippines,

Over the past four years, we have organized PyCon PH 2023, PyCon PH 2024, PyCon APAC 2025, and PythonAsia 2026. Delivering four major conferences in succession required an extraordinary amount of time and sustained effort from our core volunteer team.

Organizing a PyCon is an 8- to 12-month commitment that requires significant time, coordination, and dedication from our volunteers. We saw that this pace wasn’t sustainable. Something has to give, and it should not be the people who make this community run.

We have always said that people come first. This year, we’re proving it.

After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision not to hold PyCon PH in 2027.

This isn’t new for us. We took a strategic pause once before, from 2020 to 2022, and came back stronger. This is our second one. It’s a pause, not a goodbye. We intend to return with a stronger and more sustainable PyCon PH in 2028, while continuing to evaluate what is best for the community each year.

In the meantime, PythonPH will continue creating year-round opportunities for the community:

• Public Meetups, free in-person gatherings where community members learn, share knowledge, and connect with fellow Pythonistas
• WFH Pythonista, our online series for community members who cannot always attend in person
• The PythonPH Jobs Board, where members can find relevant opportunities
• Kaizend, our volunteer development program that helps members grow from learners into community leaders
• PyKids, which helps keep the next generation of Pythonistas curious and engaged
• PyLadies Manila, which creates spaces for women to learn, connect, and participate in the Python community

We are choosing consistency over intensity: creating more sustainable opportunities for the community to engage throughout the year instead of concentrating most of our capacity on a single annual event.

While PyCon PH takes a strategic pause, the regional Python community will continue gathering at PythonAsia 2027 in Singapore, organized by our friends from the PyCon SG community. Zorex Salvo
President, PythonPH

PythonPH is entering a new chapter.

We are pleased to welcome Zorex Salvo as the new President of PythonPH and Freilla Mae Espinola as the new Director of Operations.

They were elected by a majority vote of the Board, reflecting the trust they have earned and the confidence we have in their leadership.

Both Zorex and Freilla have been part of the PythonPH community for many years. They have contributed to community initiatives and helped shape the kind of volunteer culture we want to continue building: thoughtful, grounded, collaborative, and rooted in service. They know the heart of this community — and more importantly, they understand and embody its mission: creating spaces where people can learn, contribute, grow, and find belonging through Python and open source.

They are also among the most experienced members of the current Board. Over the years, they have built trust not only within the Philippine Python community but across the wider Python community in Asia — from PyCon APAC to regional organizing efforts — and that experience will be invaluable as PythonPH continues to grow.

Zorex Salvo, President

Zorex Salvo is a software developer with nearly a decade of experience building web applications, backend systems, and developer-focused tools using Python and modern web technologies. Active in the Python Philippines community since 2017 and volunteering since 2018, he has contributed to community initiatives focused on collaboration, education, and growing the local Python ecosystem. In 2024, he served as Chair of PyCon PH and has attended various PyCons across the APAC region to connect with fellow community leaders and strengthen regional collaboration within the Python community.

Freilla Mae Espinola, Director of Operations

Freilla Mae Espinola has been part of the PythonPH family for 9 years, long enough to have seen the community grow, evolve, and touch countless lives. What started as a shared love for Python became a calling: helping make tech a space where everyone feels they belong.

Freilla has worn many hats along the way, from serving as PythonPH’s Director of Outreach & Diversity, to leading the Python Asia Organization as Executive Director, to building her own creative ventures as Founder & CEO of Freiya Studio and the creator behind Charmed By Ella. Through it all, mentoring and community have always been at the center of everything she does.

Now stepping into the role of Director of Operations, Freilla brings with her years of love for this community and a deep commitment to keeping it a place where people come first.

Continuing the Work

After 14 years with PythonPH — and the past 8 years as President and Director of Operations, Matt and I are intentionally stepping back from our executive roles — with deep gratitude for everything this community has built together.

We will remain on the Board and will focus our energy on Kaizend, PythonPH’s volunteer training and leadership development program. We believe it’s the backbone of how PythonPH develops its volunteers and cultivates the next generation of community leaders. Learn more at kaizend.org.

This transition has been a careful process. The Board has been working since April 2026 to review and clarify roles and responsibilities across the organization, and more updates on structure will be shared soon.

It has been more than a month since PythonAsia 2026 took place at De La Salle University Manila — yet the weight and warmth of that moment still linger with us.

What unfolded during those days was more than historic — it was deeply humbling.

When we first said yes to leading PythonAsia 2026, we knew we were stepping into something far greater than ourselves. What we didn’t fully anticipate was the depth of commitment it would require. As weeks turned into months, the responsibility grew heavier — alongside our full-time roles, personal obligations, and the quiet sacrifices made behind the scenes.

Still, we chose to say yes.

We’re excited to share something new at PythonAsia 2026, a dedicated Education Summit for people who care deeply about how Python is taught and learned.

Rooted in the spirit of kalinga (care), this summit is curated for educators, trainers, and community members. We invite you to join us and share your lived experiences to foster a nurturing and responsive approach to education.

The summit will be held on March 23, 2026, at De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila. It’s designed as a collaborative, working day for those who want to improve Python education through shared experience.

Why an Education Summit?

Teaching Python looks different everywhere — be it in schools, universities, bootcamps, workplaces, and communities. There is no single “best” way to do it.

That’s why this summit is built as a working day, not a lecture day.

You’ll spend your time at the summit:

• Sharing real teaching challenges
• Learning from peers across different contexts
• Exploring practical strategies you can actually apply
• Using AI as a teaching tool, not our replacement

Who Should Attend?

This summit is for everyone! Especially people who actively teach, train, or support learning, including:

• Educators (K–12, tertiary, vocational, informal)
• Corporate and community trainers
• Curriculum designers and program leads
• Python community members exploring teaching roles

Morning Session: Peer-Driven Learning (Unconference)

The morning focuses on shared challenges and lived experience.

• Free-moving group discussions, unconference format

• Facilitated, but not lecture-driven
• Real stories, real problems, and real insights

• What works in your context and what doesn’t
• Patterns across different teaching environments
• Practical takeaways worth trying
• Open questions we still need to explore together

Afternoon Session: AI for Educators Workshop

The afternoon shifts into hands-on skill building, led by our education partners.

You’ll work on:

• Lesson planning with AI support
• Creating multiple explanations for different learners
• Assessment and feedback strategies
• Prompting techniques for educators
• Ethics, boundaries, and AI-aware learning design

What You’ll Leave With

By the end of the summit, participants can expect to leave with new perspectives from educators across the Asia-Pacific region, concrete and reusable teaching ideas, shared community knowledge that is documented and accessible, and a clearer, more grounded way of using AI in educational settings. Beyond skills and tools, the summit aims to strengthen connections and build shared understanding within the teaching community.

In the coming weeks, we will be launching a public topic-sensing survey, followed by a community voting round to help shape the discussions. More details on facilitation, logistics, and registration will also be shared soon. What is PythonAsia?

PythonAsia is the flagship gathering for Python communities in Asia, bringing together developers, students, educators, researchers, and industry practitioners to learn, collaborate, and build lasting connections. Formerly known as PyCon APAC, the conference has traveled across Asia, with past hosts including Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

In 2026, we’re excited to welcome the community back to the Philippines for PythonAsia 2026, happening on March 21–23, 2026 at De La Salle University, Manila.

PythonAsia 2026 is co-organized with the Python Asia Organization (PAO) and De La Salle University (DLSU), and hosted in the Philippines with continued support from the local Python community through PythonPH.

At the heart of this transition is our theme kalinga — the Filipino spirit of care and compassion. It’s the same heart that shaped PyCon APAC, now carried forward as PythonAsia. Building Strong Foundations Together: PyCon APAC 2025
