How to Play Snake Jungle
Snake Jungle is a free browser snake game you can play on desktop or mobile without download, or login. Unlike the classic grid-based snake game, your snake glides smoothly after your mouse cursor or finger in any direction in a more natural way. You hunt shiny apples and living, moving critters across amazing sceneries. Grow with every catch, and try not to bite your own tail, or starve, or get snapped at, or get pinched or get caught. Every game uses the same critter schedule, so high scores are fair and comparable: no luck, just pure skill.
The game is easier to control with a mouse than with a finger, and easier on a large screen than on a small one. To keep the record chase honest, the play area is capped at the same maximum size for everyone, so a giant monitor doesn't mean extra room to maneuver. If you're hunting the leaderboard seriously, a mouse on a desktop is the best choice.
Quick Start Guide
- Control the snake's head with your mouse (or drag your finger) and it follows.
- Eat the apple and other critters touching them with the snake's head and it's swallowed in one motion. You score points and grow a visible food bulge.
- Don't let the snake starve. apples spoil and every critters escape after 22 seconds. The prey starts fading when half its time is gone.
- Don't bite your tail. Crossing your own body with the head ends the run instantly, except the neck close to the body, to allow narrow turns.
- Orange balls can be pushed with your head and it bulldozes your own coils aside. Use it when prey lands inside your loops and there's no way to grab it.
- Avoid turtle shell-bumps, crab pinches and hedgehog spikes. You have just three lives for the whole run, and they never come back.
On The Menu
Red apple
Sits polished and shining where it fell. The bread and butter of every level. Just don't dawdle: the 22-second clock applies to everything, fruit included.
Grey mouse
A grey mouse turns up every few spawns - a quick flash of fur that bolts away from your head. It's slower than you, so herd it toward a wall or a corner, or trap it inside a loop of your own body, which moving critters cannot cross.
Frog
Hops in a wandering line, drifting direction between jumps, and leaps clean over your body. Lead the target: strike where it's going to land, not where it sits.
Mole
Digs a dirt heap for three seconds, then surfaces for only three. Miss it and it relocates - but it only surfaces five times before your snake starves, and the fifth heap pulses with a red warning ring. It won't pop up while your head hovers directly over the heap, so wait nearby, not on top.
Crab
Scuttles sideways and keeps its forward-pointing claws turned toward you. A frontal approach gets you pinched: 50 points and four tail segments gone, a second where it can't be eaten at all - and one of your three lives, gone for good. It turns slowly - circle around and strike it from behind.
Turtle
The only critter that can kill you. It plods along until you come close, then pulls its head and legs into its shell. Biting the hard shell costs 50 points, six segments and a life - and the third sting of the run is fatal (crab pinches and hedgehog spikes count toward the same three lives, which never refill). Instead, stay close (but not touching) to keep it nervous: it can't hold out for more than about three seconds, then it flips onto its back - plastron up, legs pedaling the air, tongue out - and that's your window.
Hedgehog
The one critter your mouth is useless against: it's spikes all the way around, and nosing it costs you a sting like any shell-bump or pinch. Instead, crush it with your body - sweep a loop of your snake right over the top of it. It panics away from your approaching coils, so corner it against a wall or pen it in before the sweep. The reward is a healthy 150 points, but it's pure trophy: the snake doesn't grow from a hedgehog. The flattened remains stay on the field for a moment as a warning to the others.
The eagle
From Level 7, the hunter becomes the hunted. Every ten seconds or so a screech rings out, a shadow races across the ground, and an eagle sweeps in from the far side of the field aiming straight for your head. It adjusts course as it comes - but once it commits to the dive it can't turn, so hold your line and dodge sharply sideways at the last moment. There are no second chances here: its talons mean instant death. Watch the shadow, not the bird. And for the brave: hunting while hunted pays - a catch made during an eagle's pass earns +10, a second catch during the same pass +50, a third +100, and the fourth and every one beyond +200.
Ice cracks
From Level 11 on - out on the endless ice - the frozen ground itself turns against you: every 1000 points splits open one more crack. A new crack fractures away from your head when there's room and may sit under your body, but the body glides safely over it - only your head crossing a crack breaks through and ends the run, on the spot. The cracks top out at 100; past that, the score counter does the bragging.
Levels, Scores and Terrains
Speed pays: catch a critter within one second of its appearance for a +100 bonus, or within two seconds for +50. The mole is the one exception - it lives by popping up for moments at a time, so its catches earn no speed bonus.
You level up every 1000 points. Each level introduces one new critter species, always right after an opening apple, and transports the hunt to a new land: from the jungle floor through cracked desert mud, a hush of snow, a lily-strewn pond, a sandy turtle-nesting beach, a mushroom forest, an eagle's nest high above the canopy, the Moon, and glacier ice, to an endless frozen lake at the very end, where the run can go on forever - but it is no safe haven: from Level 11 on (the first 1000 points past the frozen lake's edge), every 1000 points splits open one more crack in the ice, and a head that crosses one breaks through and ends the run on the spot. The cracks top out at 100 - past that, the score counter does the bragging. The snake itself has a limit too: it grows with every catch up to a cap that scales with your screen size - a bigger screen allows a longer snake - so a long body can never completely overrun a small field. Beyond that point, catches keep scoring as usual; the body just stops getting longer, though stings can still trim it back below the line. (A hard 3,000-segment ceiling also stands as a final safety limit.)
Your five best scores are saved on your device, and a new record asks for your name on the spot. Because the critter schedule and spawn pattern are identical for every player and every run, Snake Jungle works as a fair competition game: same board, same odds, may the best snake win.
The Orange Balls
Two heavy orange balls drop into the field once you pass 4,500 points (one on touch devices, where the screen is smaller). They roll only while you push them with your head, stop quickly, and barely bounce - but they shove your snake's coils out of their way like bowling balls through rope. When prey is trapped inside a loop of your own body you're in trouble - so drive a ball through the wall. And if your coils ever wrap a ball completely, it lifts and rolls right over your body to freedom.
Strategy Tips from the Garden
- From Level 7, listen for the screech: when the eagle's shadow sweeps in, hold your line - then dodge sharply sideways at the very last moment. It can't turn once it dives, and one hit is the end of the run.
- Keep your loops open and your coils spread; tight spirals are where tails get bitten.
- Park near a mole heap at a respectful distance and pounce the instant it surfaces.
- Your own body is a fence: mice, crabs and turtles cannot cross it. Build walls on purpose.
- After a big meal, remember your tail is anchored until the bulge stretches out - don't plan an escape route through space your tail still occupies.
- Against the turtle, patience scores 125 and impatience costs everything.
That's Snake Jungle: a modern, physics-flavored take on the most classic arcade formula there is - one that players from Sweden to Singapore have been chasing since the arcade and Flash eras, rebuilt here in pure HTML5. One snake, one field, ten worlds, seven critters and one eagle - and a high score list waiting for your name.
