Release Day

18 Apr

The geese had their last round of antibiotics, and they could be released on Friday.  And it seems to have done wonders for their coughing.  They are really good now.  But we were expecting another round of severe storms on Friday, so I decided to leave them and Melba and Wart and Antigone in the Morton building until Saturday morning.

That turned out to be a good choice because we had more hail.  This time, I looked out the window and saw Greg running around in the driveway trying to avoid the hailstones.

I am so grateful we didn’t have a tornado (and nothing touched the ground with that warning)

So, I ran out and put him inside.

Greg was very wet (and doing the same dodging moves the dog had done during the last storm)

I really am tired of running out into hail storms.  We should probably just quit having hailstorms for a while.

bigger hail this time, but not as much

Anyhow, Saturday morning was release day.  I started with letting the goats out.  Antigone was thrilled to get out of the Morton building.

Wart is big enough to go out on my little pasture now.

But the storms came in on a massive cold front, so he was just shivering in the Morton building.

Melba and Wart still in the Morton building

And the wind chill was about 24° F, so I made Melba and him stay in the building.  At least for a little bit longer.

Antigone was so thrilled to find green stuff that she’s going to end up with scours.  Poor girl, but she will be okay.  Sorry, but that’s the reality of sudden diet changes, and I just haven’t been able to cut grass to give them with the crazy work/campaign/weather I’ve had.

I did adjust my panels to let the geese out.  I had to race to get the bird feed before Melba started eating in.

The geese were thrilled to get out of the building.

Miss Goose and Buffy headed out

They really do like to be outside and get green stuff and wander all over.  Buffy was quick to stretch her wings.  I almost completely missed her leap, but got her on the landing.

Hopefully, they stay healthy now.

Here’s a bonus video of the goats in the Morton building.  That would be Melba and her boy, Wart, and Antigone.  And then there’s Madam Mim who likes to come in and play.

I hope you enjoy your weekend. Sorry about the horrible formatting. I hate the new editor for WordPress, but that’s the only way I can put a video in here. And the kids are cute.

Quite the Storm

16 Apr

Our rainy stretch has continued.  After overnight rain and showers off and on throughout the day on Wednesday, I left work as soon as I could because there was a severe storm headed towards my acreage, and I was going to try to beat it.  There were some impressive clouds as I headed home, and I heard on the radio that they issued a severe storm warning for my area.

driving into the storm

It started raining just before I got to my gravel road, and the gravel road was horrible condition with all the recent rains.  As I was going down the final stretch to home, I started hearing the occasional ping of hail.  I hurried into the driveway with the thought that I could safely sit it out in the truck.  But then I saw my dog running to the gate to greet me.  I waited a couple of seconds.  I hoped he’d go back under the deck or onto the back porch to get out of the hail because it was really coming down and not tiny.  But he kept cringing from being hit by the hail and I finally gave up.  By the time I got to the gate, he was already on the deck waiting by the door.

He came in dripping wet and muddy and quite happy with himself as my carpet turned into a wet mess smelling like wet dog.

Anyhow, the storm continued.

Then I went out to get my stuff out of the truck, and on my way back in, I noticed something amiss.

my rock garden

I never in my dreams thought I’d have a sinkhole.  This is the well that I had professionally filled around twenty-five years ago.  It’s my rock garden.  I want my rocks!

My rose quartz is somewhere down there!

And then I noticed how battered my tulips were.  Poor things.

Image

the one lying in the hail pile was completely broken off

I checked and it was about 3/4 inches throughout the day, on top of the 1/2 inch from the overnight.

But everyone was safe.  I’m just whiny.

And then Mother Nature treated us to a beautiful rainbow.

But Friday has an even bigger potential for severe storms.
