Gayle Laakmann McDowell is an author, consultant, and founder focusing on improving tech hiring for both the interviewer and the candidate.
Gayle has worked as an engineer for Google, Microsoft, and Apple. She is the author and creator the best-selling Cracking the Interview & Career series: Cracking the Coding Interview, Cracking the PM Interview (co-authored with Jackie Bavaro), Cracking the PM Career (co-authored with Jackie Bavaro), and Cracking the Tech Career

- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2011Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe Google Resume is a comprehensive guide to landing a job at any major high-tech company.
This book could not have been written by a more passionate and qualified person. In fact, the author Gayle Laakmann McDowell not only worked at Google and other tech giants, she was responsible for interviewing 100+ candidates while she was there!
The Google Resume opened up my eyes to how rigorous and intimidating a tech interview can be and I feel very lucky to have found such a well written book on this topic, while only a junior in college. Gayle provides all the tools and knowledge so that you can start preparing for the challenging job/internship hiring process now! This puts you at an advantage over the other candidates, who will probably be blindsided when asked to write a non-trivial algorithm on the spot during an interview (See the Programming Interview chapter).
Here are some of the highlights of the book:
Chapter 2: Advanced Preparation. i.e., if you're still a student, what should you be doing right now to build a skill set that would compel a recruiter and manager to interview and hire you.
Chapter 3: Getting in the Door. This chapter has a section that talks about the "Black Hole" of online job submissions. If you don't know what the black hole is, it's when you spend 30 or more minutes submitting your resume online, only to never hear back. She provides many important tips in this chapter to avoid the pitfalls of online resume submissions.
Chapters 4-6: These chapters are all about the fundamental qualities that a tech resume and cover letter should have. I see conflicting resume advice scattered all over the web, Gayle on the other hand, provides very clear and meaningful tips throughout these chapters. I thought I had the perfect resume before reading this, boy was I wrong.
Chapter 9: The programming Interview. This chapter is all about what you can expect from the technical portion of a programming interview, including how you can prepare and what sort of coding questions you can expect. One of the most valuable sections in this chapter is the "Must Know" topics for programing interviews. She provides a list of all the data structures, algorithms and computer science concepts that one would be expected to know at a bare minimum. If you're still a student, this allows you to know in advance what topics will carry over into industry, and should therefore be taken even more seriously.
Chapter 10: Getting into Gaming. I have always wondered what it's really like to work in the video game industry. She provides very insightful commentary on the ins and outs of gaming related jobs. 12 hour days working in gaming, ouch!
In addition to all this, Gayle has a companion website called CareerCup, that gives you company specific interview tips that have been graciously submitted from users that have gone through interviews at companies like Qualcomm, Microsoft and of course Google:)
Perhaps the best thing about this book is that it has zero fluff and can easily be read in a few days.
I've read other advice books related to other topics and I've put them down after a couple chapters, thinking the author was no more knowledgeable on the subject than me. I think it's rare to find a book written by someone with such genuine knowledge on a topic, and who's willing to share it!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2013Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseAfter graduating last August, I wanted to attend my college's Fall career fair to start looking for a full time job in Computer Engineering. I had a pretty strong resume already but I found recruiters taking way too long to scan my resume at previous fairs when looking for an internship. With the stakes being higher for fulltime employment, I knew that if they couldn't find what they were looking for at a first glace, my resume went into the trash. Not what I wanted after all that hard work during undergrad and graduate school!
The author of this book takes you through the entire interviewing process and provided great advice that helped me to trim down my resume and eliminate walls of text. She provided sample resumes and what makes them stand out. Also, she provided advice on how to approach the interviews and study for technical questions (though she has another book dedicated to that).
Now the important part: Did this book help me to get a job? I think so! I redid my resume from scratch and my new resume seemed to impress the recruiters much more. I honestly think this book helped me to get more interviews (I had several on-site interviews with many large tech companies such as Qualcomm, Intel, IBM, and Samsung and tons of phone interviews) and to "study" for my interviews better.
Here's my advice if you are looking to get an interview with a top tech company: pick this book up, read it carefully, tweak your resume based on the author's suggestions, get your resume critiqued by professors/advisors/etc, and develop a 30-second "elevator pitch" that highlights some cool projects/internships you completed during your schooling and how you apply to the company. Don't just hand your resume off to a recruiter and wait quietly; while they are reading, give the pitch to supplement your improved resume. You get one chance to show them why they should hire you, make it count!
To close, this book, plus some outside advisement, will really help you to stand out. It certainly helped me to focus on the important things top tech companies look for in a resume and during an interview. I'm happy to say that I'll be starting my new job soon! Best of luck!

PlaceholderReviewed in India on January 11, 20155.0 out of 5 stars Very Precise and handy!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGoogle Resume is actually a pretty good guide for aspiring IT professionals looking to get into the top notch companies like Microsoft and Google. It presents many ins and outs of the entire procedure. It helps us to step into the shoes of the recruiter and hence we have a clear image of the qualities that we would require for cracking the interview. It also breaks the age old myth that GPA is everything by bringing up cases where the individuals weren't selected on the basis of GPA, and hence gives us alternative ways to polish our skills. It is a good read nevertheless.

Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book helped me to upgrade my boring resume to extremely attractive one. I've sent tons of resumes but couldn't make a single positive response. But, Just like a magic, I got a quick response from well known tech company in Silicon Valley when I refined my cover letter and resume with this book. I strongly suggest this book if you're looking for a job at any US tech company.

Les conseils de ce livre sont excellent et ne sont pas seulement valables pour le secteur des Start-up.
Ils sont réutilisables pour toutes les branches de métier par contre il faut prendre en compte les différences culturelles entre le marché de l'emploi américain et le marché français.
